Bedroom

Dreaming of a new bedroom.

Our bed is falling apart. It hasn’t happened lately, but the mattress sometimes likes to just fall right down to the floor. *thump* It’s a little alarming! So… I would love to buy a new bed.

And a new mattress. And new sheets. And a new dresser. And some nightstands too please. Oh, and maybe a lighting fixture and some lamps?

Because really, why stop at just the bed when you can spend all of your money in one fell swoop? Hey, maybe we should change the yucky carpet in there too! Hmmm… probably not the best idea to go crazy in the bedroom when there are more pressing needs (hello, blue bathtub and toilet). But I can still list the things I want! Such as:

An upholstered bed
The Hoffman bed from Room & Board:

Or the Tate bed from Crate & Barrel:

A new mattress
Yep, that would be nice.

New sheets
Oh, I’m not picky. I just haven’t found the perfect set yet. ;)

A long dresser
The 6 drawer dresser from west elm:

Narrow Leg Dresser

Or the similar (but nicer) Calvin dresser from Room & Board:

Two new nightstands
I’d like these to be either very understated and simple (clean lines, medium/dark wood), or an interesting shape that’s been painted with a bold color (red, orange, teal). I’m hoping I can find an inexpensive set (thrift shop?) and then paint.

New lighting
Perhaps if I find an extra $2798 I’ll get this sexy red chandelier from Design Within Reach:

Murano chandelier

(I’ll take that KWID wallpaper too, please.)

Hardwood floors
Oh, who am I kidding? I’d settle for non-yucky carpet.

With all the cash you’ll be tossing about on a new bedroom, will you get 2 of those chandeliers? One for me, I’ll pay you back. I promise!

If you need a new mattress go straight to DWR and buy the Sonno.

    Best thing I ever did.

for Xmas of 06 my girl and i just bought the Tate… we had a cheap platform from ikea that was horrible and an old matress from college. The tate is amazing. just high enough to not be awkward, and low enough to have the good look. As for a mattress we searched high and low and did tons of research, and for the money and comfort, and long lasting we got a foam / latex hybrid bed for 1200, it’s incredible. I love your blog. And your house is so great, congrats.

One great thing about ripping out old carpeting: It’s free! And the worst wood floor in the world is still a thousand times better than someone else’s cruddy old carpeting. I would really encourage you to think about pulling it out before you move in, at least out of the bedroom. It’s bad feng shui to hate your floorcovering!

If what’s underneath is hardwood that’s not in terrible condition, awesome–you might be able to leave it alone and just put some scatter rugs around. If it’s just wood planks rather than finished flooring, or even linoleum or vinyl tile, floor paint will cover that right up and make everything feel fresh. Getting the carpet out and the floor spiffed up before the move will buy you some time and the all-important pleasant room to retreat to after a day of grappling with the more urgent stuff. You may even like what you end up with so much that you don’t end up changing it after all!

Congratulations on your new home and remember, one project at a time, steady on, and enjoy!

Love that red chandelier! Oh and I vote for nightstand with interesting shapes and bright colors. More fun that way!

Boy, do I agree wholeheartedly with what Diana said. I have never experienced such a deflating of the spirit as when we had skanky carpet. After it was torn out, I couldn’t BELIEVE the amount of dust (and dried mold!) that was under it. Every day I hated it and wouldn’t walk on it. Plain board is SOOOO preferable to old carpet. Love the chandy, love the Kwid wallpaper.

try a tempurpedic bed. I think the free trial is three or four months and if you are not satisfied they pick it up. When we got ours in 2003 the pick up was free or $129.00. I can’t remember which? I had fibro myalgia and arthritis and the difference with this bed was almost miraculous. I know you and your husband are half our age but really it is totally comfortable compared to innerspring matresses.

I’m bed shopping, and somehow I ended up on your site (for the 2nd time in a year; I know I’ve toured your then new bedroom the last time I thought I was bed shopping). I think I clicked on a link from Apartment Therapy both times since we need a bed that’s not too tall to go in front of our window. I am also not keen on having a too short bed, either. I guess I’m picky that way.

Anyway, do you recommend the R&B bed, now that you have lived with it and have kids? Any qualms or things you love? Thanks for your insight!

Yes! I’d absolutely recommend that bed. It has held up beautifully, and is just as sturdy now as when we bought it nearly five years ago.
