Bedroom

Going into Details

It is so nice to sleep in an actual bedroom as opposed to the hallway! Yes, the bed is back in its rightful place… and no, we’re not actually finished.

Here’s a little before & after of the empty room:

Bedroom - before & after

Brandon and I started our project last Wednesday by emptying the room, ripping up the carpet, and painting the walls and the ceiling yellow. It reminded me of my grandma’s old kitchen, and I promptly repainted the walls and the ceiling taupe (“Chocolate Froth” by Behr) the next day. Two coats. Then we took up the tack strips and old baseboards, and we began laying the bamboo floor. We finished laying the floor on Friday, and we installed the new baseboards. I also painted the window and door trim white (primer + two coats of paint). On Saturday we installed the baseshoe (the finishing touch to the baseboards that hides the gap for floor expansion), and the painting was finished on Sunday.

We learned that we are not expert woodworkers. It all looked much better after we caulked the gaps and painted though!

Hmmm...

I hung Roman shades for privacy (they’re from Target, but I actually don’t like them very much). Curtains went up next. I chose brown, but that was before we had decided to put the bed under the windows. Now I wish I had picked a different color. On Monday, I brought up an 8×10 rug to go under the bed. I wasn’t sure about it, since the whole project was centered on changing the floor (which I think turned out beautifully). We had the rug already though, and I do like the way it looks now that the room is finished. I lugged the nightstands upstairs while Brandon was at work, and that was not fun, but I was really eager to get a lot done. They were heavier than they looked.

I did wait for Brandon to return before attempting to get the bed in. We were so worried we’d scratch our lovely new floors, but we managed to get the bed in place safely. Next it was time to hang our reading lamps, which you may remember from a previous post (The Perils of Coupons).

You two did a great job! It’s just beautiful. I really like the rug, it is sort of grounds the bed. I also like that you placed the bed by the window. How do you like that? Do you find you get any drafts? Guess that depends on if you have good windows or not.

I think some bold color and printed curtains would look great popping out from behind your headboard.

I’m seriously in love with that bed! I think I might have to start saving up for one.

The bed is great! I was considering the Tate, but I didn’t like the proportions of it when I went to check it out at the store.

The windows are a little drafty, but with the roman shades down and the curtains drawn, it’ll be fine (and that’s only if it gets really cold). But yes, some color/pattern on the curtains would be so much better!

The brown and white sheets were from CB2, the orange and white duvet set were from IKEA, and the pink quilt was from west elm.

those roman shades are from target? they look great!! are they hard to put up? I’m not talented with that kind of thing at all, but I think those look worth the try.

Great site btw! We’re just about to buy our first home, and really excited with the prospect of decorating/renovating!

They were pretty easy to put up! You just screw in a couple of metal pieces, and then top of the shade slides into those.

I’m sooo sorry to pick on such an old post! I just kept running back over the picture and it kept bugging me, and I couldn’t figure out why, then I realized that your “hospital corners” are on the *end* of the bed, not the *side*.

The flap’s to bold underneath the side so that when you get in, you can untuck the side panel of the spread and still have the foot tucked in.

I say all this and my bed isn’t tucked anywhere, but our blankets aren’t long enough (transitional bedding. :)

Also, I *adore* your home, it’s absolutely lovely and I completely agree with your commentary on art.

I totally love your room. our bedroom is currently in a very similar layout. I was wondering what paint finish you used on your walls: satin/eggshell. etc. Also, where did you get your really long curtain rod? :)

WOW! Love your floor! Can you tell me what wood and paint were used on the floor? The color is spectacular!
