Bathrooms Painting

Oops, Wrong Color.

I painted the bathroom a few days ago. It looks much more blue than I thought it would. Oops.

Here’s what the bathroom looks like so far…

bathroom progress

That’s “Antiguan Sky” from Benjamin Moore. It’s a pretty blue/green color that I pulled from the shower curtain, but it’s much brighter than I was expecting. It doesn’t look so terrible in the photo, but I just took that picture a few minutes ago (it’s midnight). It’s a very *ahem* cheerful color during the day.

I hated it at first and immediately thought I would repaint. Now that I’ve added some towels and a bathmat from IKEA, it looks kinda cute. Kinda.

*addendum*
Here are some new photos, taken at 10:30 a.m. with lots of daylight coming in:

You’ll need to do another picture so we can get the full effect. The sink looks kinda … peachy pink. Oh my.

I like the robin blue, but I would like to see it in daylight. It is looking very cute!

I hope I’m not going to get a kick for piping in so late. But I would say return to your old #2 plan. The creamy walls and the espresso sink/mirror cabinets are gorgeous. I’m really not a fan of combining blue walls with a blue toilet. Too smurfy. But the blue toilet is totally cool as long as it doesn’t have to compete with walls…Good luck!

Hey, I just read some of your older posts and saw that you have a matching blue tub. Totally cool! But it definitely tells me that blue walls would be way too much blue in your bathroom. I’m excited to see what you do next!

What happened? I thought you were going with the kiwi color? Also it seemed the audience consensus was definitely with that wall color even if they wanted different curtains and cabinet painting colors.

Changed your mind at the paint store?

I also thought you didn’t really like blue at all?

If you do decide to repaint, I would try to match the green vs. the blue. I painted my living room with the Benj. Moore color ‘Stolen Moments’ it is a bit less olive than the green in the curtain, but it might be a nice complimentary color. It’s hard to tell from the small piece you’ll see at the store, but it is very soft, pleasant and peaceful. I had to redo my living room because the first time I did it I used stolen moments, but did a 50% lighter formula which was a serious mistake. Once I painted the walls with the full version of the color I loved it. Be heartened that the bathroom is a small room…if you do have to do it again.

I don’t like blue! I don’t know what I was thinking. There was a really pretty color in the shower curtain, so I matched it up with “antiqua sky”.

I think I’m going to repaint. Anon, “Stolen Moments” is one of the colors I was considering!

I really love the paint color – but, I agree it’s a bit much with all of that blue. A nice pale green would be great… and if you go with the dark browns elsewhere everything will complement each other very well.

On a side note… just be happy your tub and toilet aren’t purple! My neighbor’s is BRIGHT purple.

the same thing happened to me using a behr paint for my kitchen, I re-tinted it 4 times and then gave up.
Did the paint have a slight sheen at all? That’s what my paint store clerk blamed it on. (Kitchen & Bathroom paint usually does, though there are some eggshell paints specifically for these rooms).

Blue-greens are hard to achieve. Especially in sunlight!

I don’t think blue greens are hard to achieve. Two of my favorite paint colors are blue greens: Gossamer Blue and Bird’s Egg (both Benjamin Moore). They may not match your shower curtain or toilet but they are beautiful colors. I think the color you picked is too far on the green side, which has a tendency to look what I like to describe as Kmart green. That said I’d love to see how the Stolen Moments green turns out. My fear is it will make the toilet stand out even more. Try the Gossamer Blue chip, it’s an almost neutral blue/green. I have it in my kitchen with aqua accents. You might like it.

hmmm bit cheerful huh? i’d go for a blue with more white… but it doesn’t look all the bad :P are you painting the mirror and cabinet white? if so… why not paint those bits white first and see how it sits with the current blue walls? you might like it!

I actually like the blue, b/c with it the toilet is not the focus of the room, but without it I think all eyes are going for the toilet first.

I love the colour itself but it’s the wrong blue for the toilet.

What’s great about the schemes below is that you’re using the toilet as an accent, while here it just looks like you tried to match the wall colour to the toilet and not succeeding.

Hmmm. Well, first of all, I just wanted to say that I love how you are willing to post your perceived blunders alongside your beauties. Shows class and confidence, in my opinion.

I agree that blue-greens are hard. I’ve had the same problem, myself. I finally figured out through trial and error to pick my blue-greens from the gray section of the paint display. If I pick from the blue or the green sections they come out a bit sea foamy for my taste. Not every time, but this is my experience.

And this may be just the pictures or my monitor, but with that antigua color all I see is a whole lotta bright, sea foamy green–very little blue.

I suggest you put off repainting until you finish the project–or at least until you paint the cabinets and mirror. It’s a big enough missing piece of the room that it could make a big difference in how the color on the walls ultimately reads.

well if it’s the color in the shower curtain you like, can’t you take the curtain to the paint store and get them to match it and mix up a sample for you? my benjamin moore has done that for me before

Yup…I just went back to look at #2 again. Definitely a great choice.
Don’t feel bad. I just had to ask the cabinet maker to plane down the legs on my kitchen island by 1/2″ which is holding up my project by about two weeks. :(

i love the blue walls, but not combined with everything else going on. those robin’s egg walls would look great with a white pedestal sink, brushed nickle fixtures, new flooring and a white toilet. not sure what your budget is because i have not read older posts but i think the worst part of the bathroom is the cabinet, mirror/light and toilet. the tiffany blue walls are lovely.

i applaud you for showing it to everyone when it’s not yet finished!
