Oh Deer, It’s Christmas

Starburst

We started decorating for Christmas a bit early this year because we needed the tree up for our Christmas card photo. I won’t show it to you yet, but it’s good. The photo shoot involved Brandon, footie pajamas (complete with butt flap), and Jim Beam. Ho ho ho.

Christmas in our apartment last year was very silver, pink, and shiny. It didn’t feel right to deck out our 1920 bungalow the same way, so we went out to get a real tree a few days ago.

It's Christmas

All of our ornaments are the same, but of course the tree makes all the difference.

I wish I had some cute pillows to switch out for the holidays. I’ve had my eye on the Swedish House Pillow Cover from Pottery Barn, but I’m hoping it will go on sale after Christmas and I can buy a couple to save for next year. The living room doesn’t look bad with our normal items, but a little change is always nice.

The Tree & the Living Room

And now, my taste gets a little questionable.

When we were packing up our things from the attic of the old apartment, I added a little something extra to our Christmas decorations. Three deer. White ceramic deer. They were just sitting up in that stuffy attic, abandoned and unloved, and I knew nobody would miss them if I “liberated” them. So I did. Brandon found out as I was unpacking them a few days ago and…

He hates them.

Oh Deer

Well, maybe he doesn’t hate them. Strongly dislikes? (Is that better, honey?)

Our Stockings Were Hung

I put them on the buffet, and I think they’re fantastic. Oh deer.

Oooooh your house looks beautiful! I think the deer are fabulous and the fact that you, er, “rescued” them makes them even better. Our house has acquired a lot more furniture this year than it had last year and now I have no idea where we can fit an Xmas tree. Oh no!

Ha, ha – the deer saga sounds just like something that would happen at our house… Lovely tree! (Ooo – I clicked through your holiday flickr and LOVED your last year one too! Would be perfect in our 50’s rambler! Did you make the sequins balls?)

I concur with your other guests, the deer are lovely as are your other festive decorations.

Also, I wanted to let you know that I finally figured out how to use the links on my blog and your blog was one of the first I added to my list of favorites. I just love reading about your latest pursuits and enjoy your sense of style.

Also, re the GREAT VACUUM CONTROVERSY, I got my Dyson Animal online for less than $400 and I use it all the time on my hardwood floors. If you don’t have pets, you could get the less expensive model without the special animal attachment as it’s the exact same machine. If you look online, be sure to confirm that what you’re buying is absolutely new and NOT a refurbished model (some sellers are tricky like that).

I think the deer are so cute. Perfect for Christmas. My husband would probably put his foot down and not even let me put them up. I also love the silver tree. (His foot went down on my silver tree idea too.)

I actually really like the deer. They’re very subtle and they match all the nice white pieces in your hutch. Very nice and elegant!

What is his complaint with the deer?

I found my husband to have very strong feeling towards the deer when we went shopping for decor and I was surprised. We found two that didn’t offend his sensibilities too much.

    I like yours!

Your tree looks lovely, and I definitely agree that the deer should stay. Like Jill, I also noticed the tree skirt. It’s such a refreshing change from some of the cheesy holiday ones out there. Where is it from? Also, where did you get the trees behind the deer? I’ve been looking for those everywhere, and never thought they’d be so hard to find.

You may have already noticed this, but the PB shopping bags are the same pattern as the pillow you like. If you buy anything there for Christmas, you may want to handle the bag with care, because it could give you paper for a fun DIY holiday project. Gosh, I love this season!

I think the deer are pretty cute. I would probably like them better myself if they were painted a solid white, or maybe sparkly silver. I think the contrast of the black eyes and nose against the white is what bothers me.

    Your tree is fabulous!

    tree = fantastic.
I’ve been reading your blog for a few weeks now and your place (and the old one) are (were) totally gorgeour. You have an awesome eye!

As for the deer – its…”kitsch chic!” I don’t think it would work in everyone’s home but it fits in beautifully in yours.

I’m so glad everyone likes the deer! I knew I couldn’t be the only one. ;)

Anon, the tree skirt was from Marshall Field’s a few years ago. It was originally $90 and although it was perfect (brown! pink and white poms!), I couldn’t spend that much. I waited until the Christmas stuff went on sale and I got it for only $9!

The pillows on the couch are from Thomas Paul and Anthropologie.

Wendee, those sequin balls from last year were from Pier1 (jen, yep – you recognized a lot of pink and red ornaments from there).

Maggie, thanks for adding me! I appreciate it. And as for the Dyson – we did end up buying it. I googled for a discount code and found one for Linens ‘n Things (with in-store pickup).

Rachel, thanks for the PB bag tip! I went and asked for a bag so I could have the pattern. They looked at me a little strange, but oh well. :)

The little trees in back of the deer were probably from Michael’s or Target. I’ve had them for several years now.

Veronica, the star was from Target too (last year).

We really didn’t buy anything new this year, except for the tree!

I love the deer and think they are whimsical and fun; I have a question though. Where did you find those eat & drink words in your hutch? I’ve been looking for something similar for the bookshelves we have in our dining room and all I can find are “@” symbol bookends at bookstores …
