Next: An Excellent Way to Read Blog Posts

I don’t know if this is a new feature, or just a new-to-me thing, but it’s pretty fantastic. If you use Google Reader but miss reading blog posts in their original context, prepare to be very excited… You can install a little “Next” bookmark in your browser bar and click through your unread posts on each individual blog instead of in the reader!

next...

You can find the bookmarklet by going to “Settings” in Google Reader, then “Goodies”. Happy browsing!

Thank you thank you!! And you can create a Next button for your categories too – how smart! (Because I only really care about seeing my “Design” inspiration blogs in their original format, not ALL the blogs I follow.)

Also, when you’ve exhausted the “Next” button by reading through all your blogs, you get to a site that congratulates you for reaching the end of the internet. And tells you to go outside or something. It’s cute.

  25. Jules May 15, 2009 at 11:02 pm #

HEAR about your new role as a mom. Stupid homophones.

  26. Tina May 15, 2009 at 11:58 pm #

  29. Valerie May 16, 2009 at 8:09 am #

I’m feeling a bit stupid, but I can’t figure out where to drag the next button to. I opened up the “settings/goodies” in one window, clicked on the next button and dragged it to another open window with my Google Reader pulled up, but no matter where I would drag it to, it would automatically open a new blog post up, but I couldn’t find the next button anywhere that I had tried dragging it to?

Love a girl who’s tech-savvy AND makes things pretty. Much appreciated…

That IS exciting! Thanks for the hot tip!

  37. Making it Lovely May 18, 2009 at 12:15 pm #

Ah, the only trouble is that you can’t star items. At least I don’t think you can.

Robin, that font is Square Meal.

  38. maha May 18, 2009 at 1:16 pm #

    Thanks for the great tip!

  39. Anna @ D16 May 18, 2009 at 3:00 pm #

I assumed everyone knew about this! I could never keep up with blogs without this feature. :)

Tip: Put the “next” button all the way on the left in your toolbar, and you can just sit there and hit command-1 over and over again. :)

Thank you so much for posting this! I just got on board with Google reader but I found I missed the seeing the sites in their pretty packages as well. Now I have the best of both worlds!

  41. sunny May 26, 2009 at 4:17 pm #

I adore this feature. Thanks for sharing it! I was missing (in Google Reader) seeing design blogs in their “natural environment” :)

I am a long way from getting to the “end of the internet” but hopefully I’ll get that message soon!!

By the way – the feature helped me win a blog contest. It mentioned the first reader to respond won..and I won a DVD because the “next” button got me to the blog moments after the blog entry was posted.

  42. foobella May 27, 2009 at 7:22 pm #

I’m with Valerie. I’ve dragged that next button all around town just about and can’t figure it out. help? =(
