'L' for Lighting Bedroom

IKEA Maskros Pendant

Remember how the Maskros Pendant was all over the design blogs after IKEA showed it at the latest ICFF? And it was supposed to be in select US IKEA stores by August? I think the light would look great in my bedroom, and it is now in stock at my nearest IKEA! I’m going to have to take a little trip out there to see it in person…

I was just looking at this light fixture on Ikea’s Web site, and I think it is available at some select U.S. stores. It’s not in the Ikea closest to me (Atlanta), but I did some random searches of other markets, including the two stores in Illinois and the site says they have it in stock. I love this pendant! I wish the Atlanta store carried it.

I saw it this weekend at the Schaumburg Ikea! It is really cool, looks like it is made out of paper and it is really big! I have my eye on the KNAPPA
Pendant lamp but they have been out of stock the last 2 times I was there.

I wouldn’t suggest buying the KNAPPA lamp :/ it’s pretty hard to keep it clean :( I got it and then switched to the paper-ball-lamp-thing which cost me about €3 ^^

I bought this lamp last Thursday for my TV room but that was in The Netherlands. I was quite surprised as there’s no mention of this lamp on either the website or the new catalog. I’m so in love with it and will show it to you when the room is done.

I love this! And I have to admit I got a smug little sense of satisfaction knowing it’s available in Canada and not in the US. Throw us a bone! You guys get all of the good stuff. READ: J Crew, CB2, Target… I could go on for hours.

Did you buy it?? This is going to sound odd but I totally saw you at IKEA and Eleanor is even cuter in person. I am hoping to find someone with a paypal account who would buy this for me and ship it to me. I was just in the Schaumberg store about three weeks ago, its a five hour drive for me, I fell in love but could not mentally find a spot. Now I have the spot, I just need the light and would rather skip the big commute!

  • Mackenzi
    September 13, 2009 at 5:31 pm

I was not at all thrilled with it when I saw it at my local IKEA. Seems cheap (I know, I know…) which is sad, I have a dandelion theme of sorts in my LR.

  • Jules
    September 13, 2009 at 6:11 pm

I saw it today at the IKEA dream house. It is HUGE and made of paper. I think it would look great in our toy room/den (once I’ve redone it) or in they boys’ bedroom (also once I’ve redone it. However, like previous posters have said, it’s made of paper and looks kind of cheap. Some of the…thistles? daisies? dandelion thingies? were already bent and looking goofy. Plus, I keep brainstorming how I would keep it from being a giant dust collector since I refuse to individually dust/blow each one of those…whatever they are.

    • Making it Lovely
      September 13, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Ah, I didn’t even think of how dusty it would get. I didn’t think it looked cheap though – I really liked it in person.

    • Jules
      September 14, 2009 at 4:39 pm

I really liked it, too, but when I considered that I would have to find a way to clean it, the paper construction was a bummer. If it were made of a different material I could blow it clean with the compressor or something similar. Of course, if it were made of a different material such a large light would be 5 times the cost that it is now.

I saw it in Schaumburg yesterday as well. It’s gorgeous but seems like you’d need loft sized ceilings to make it work. It reminded me of one of the exhibits I saw in the Museum of Contempary Art yesterday as well!

OK. After waiting months for this fixture to come out with no actual specs to go off of, I was surprised to see how H-U-G-E the pendant was! I bought it, even though I knew deep down that it just wasn’t going to work in our bedroom. The ceilings are really low on our second floor – only seven and a half feet up. I *thought* that maybe I could hack it and make it smaller, or just use half of it, but after looking at it here at home I just don’t think I’m going to be able to make it work. I’m so disappointed! I wanted it to work so badly.

yeah, we saw it in person this summer here in Germany and it was ridiculously huge – we wanted it over our dining room table but after seeing it were thinking ‘no way’. I just can’t even imagine assembling that thing and not bending wire/paper the wrong way. Good idea—but not quite. I’m now drooling over the Norm 06 lamp over at Norm Copenhagen – same price range and totally cute…but for my office! =)

I can’t wait to see how you go with this.

I was really keen to see it in person, and had the luck on the weekend, but it was HUGE. (I was hoping to make my walk-in-robe a little den of girlie chic…)

It’s so cute. I’ll just need to find a bigger place to put it.

As someone who is trying to de-IKEA-fy my house a bit (but still very much in love with the place and not really trying all that hard) I often appreciate these bummer moments. When I get excited about one of their products and don’t love it when I see it in person it sometimes brings a little relief. Ah: I don’t need another thing!

Hey all, just thought I’d share…this is part of the IKEA PS 2009 line, a line of really cool, over the top furnishings that IKEA brings out every 3 years. It was slated to be introduced worldwide earlier this year, but unfortunately, they decided with the recession hitting the U.S. so hard, they would not introduce in U.S. Then they announced that 9 U.S. stores would be getting the new IKEA PS line, but only in “markets that could support” the new designs. So it looks like, for now, it’s only New York, Chicago, possibly Miami (not sure), and a couple of the Cali stores. I have been drooling over this one since it was first announced about a year ago, and I am still lusting after one, because my store does not carry them. Hope you guys figure out a way to make it work in your bedroom! I’d love to see it there, I think it would be AMAZING!

I was just going to post to let you know how HUGE this fixture is, but saw that you’ve already discovered its size! We have it hanging on the upstairs landing – luckily we have very high ceilings.

  • Alana
    September 17, 2009 at 6:25 pm

It’s really interesting and I actually do have a spot for it. We have a 2 story high entryway that would be a good place for this guy. But the house came with some cool MC fixtures that I feel guilty for pulling out. I already yanked one out for my daughter’s room and my husband still gives me crap about it. Do you pull fixtures that are in themselves very cool *and*, more importantly original to the house, to replace with an Ikea fixture because it’s fresh? Yikes. I’m torn!

    • Making it Lovely
      September 25, 2009 at 8:18 am

I’ve never been lucky enough to start out with good fixtures! Well, except for the Nelson bubble lamp that was in the dining room of this house, oddly enough (we just moved it to the living room).

You can always hang on to the originals and put them back if you wanted to. Or put them back if you ever move and take the newer ones with you!

Then we went there and I really, really didn’t like it at all when we came across it. :( as several others mentioned before, this lamp is HUGE and I suppose it would be extremely hard to a) keep it clean and b) to put it together in the first place :D

I just finished hanging mine and it’s really nice! we completely renovated our attic and the height is just perfect!
if you don’t like the size, in our stores in belgium they have a smaller version, but I think it’s the size that makes it cool! the smaller one is not so impressive – some things are better in a certain size -.
for the dust: just ignore it ;-) , and for the price you pay this fixture, you can change it whenever it’s too dirty. I think they should sell some ‘refills’.
To change the light bulb: just take out some half circles and you can do it!
for the material: if it was in plastic (which I believe is possible) it certainly looked cheaper…

  • Em
    December 24, 2010 at 10:44 pm

To change the light bulb, you just reach up in the center. It helps to have someone reach in from the side to steady it, too. It’s not difficult, though, and the fixture uses only low-wattage bulbs, so once you get a CFL in there it won’t be an issue for years.

We have it in the dining room, it’s huge, I like the hugeness. I did have to hack it with some frosted plastic around the bulb because you can see right through the fixture. The good news about cleaning is that the paper is somewhat resilient, so you can dust normally and even aim the vacuum at it. The bad news, of course, is that any kind of stain is permanent. So when we had a ladybug problem this fall, and the ladybugs were drawn to the light, hanging around and pooping on it… yeah. I really wish they sold refills, too.

  • Paul Salisbury
    May 26, 2011 at 1:48 am

Oh I’ve seen that too and it is HUGE! Actually changing the bulb is the least of my concern, it’s cleaning it that’s bothering me.
