No New Glasses

OK, I’m a little bummed. No new glasses for me right now. My prescription has expired and the optician cannot release it to me. I’d go in for a new exam, but pregnancy can change your vision temporarily.

And I was leaning towards these from See (I stopped in there yesterday). They’re similar to the Fillmore frames from Warby Parker, but a little more flattering on me. Still geeky though.

Shameless plug for you to get your exam at Compass Eye Care in Oak Park (my husband’s independent optometry practice). He has a pretty cool selection of frames: http://www.compasseyecare.com. Admittedly not as cheap as what you can get online but you will be supporting local business!

Love your site and I love the white trim in your dining room! (Said as fellow owner of old OP house with painted wood trim.)

I was bummed, too — I was all set to get glasses from Warby Parker . . . but my Rx has a prism in one of the lenses . . . and their lab cannot do that (yet). Sadness. Just picked up my new specs from somewhere else, not nearly as cool.

So, I read your blog all the time and I admit this is my first comment! My favorite posts are the monthly photos of your daughter. She is adorable! Its amazing how time flies.

So, my company is recruting for a Website Designer. Last time we recruited for this position we got 2 different types of candidates: Artsy people who could make pretty pages but couldn’t code, or techy people who could code but didn’t necesarily make pretty webpages. We need someone who can do both. Do you have advice for where I can find a Designer/Engineer hybrid? Or, even anyone in your network who might know anyone? I think this position will be difficult to fill, so I’m casting the net far and wide! Our offices are located in Oakbrook Terrace. Thanks. :-)

I’ve gotta agree with Anne Marie – you can get nice glasses with accurate prescriptions at a fraction of the price of “brick & mortar” shops and probably half (or less) the price of the Warby Parkers.

Check out our Online Optics blog post to read more about our experiences with buying glasses online. it is a bit daunting at first, but we’re hooked!

I wouldn’t bother getting new glasses until your new baby is 5/6 months old. When I was preggo with #2, my vision went to hell…my glasses hardly did anything. After she was born (she’s 5.5 months now), it got better, then went back to horrible. I finally went and got my eyes checked last week…my prescription had changed a lot. So I think this was a blessing in disguise. No sense getting new glasses now, only to have to get new lenses in 6 months.

Why are you going for those overly gigantic nerdcore grandma glasses? They don’t flatter your face very well. I liked the second pair in your last glasses post. Your face would be complemented much better in smaller frames that are a bit wider across to highlight your cheek structure.

i recommend zenni optical. i got a pair for $8.95!!! with prescription lenses! and i had an older prescription as well. i also ordered a pair of prescription sunglasses but wasn’t nearly as happy with them as i was the regular glasses i ordered. but if you just want something new for the meantime, they have really good prices!

It does not seem right that the doctor would not release you prescription. I was recently helping my sister with ordering glasses online and she called the doctor and they made sure to tell her that the prescription was expired but my sister persisted (she is pretty sure her prescrip has not changed and can’t afford an exam right now) and they faxed it to her. She even asked for her Pupilary Distance (which Warby Parker needs) and they gave it to her. You don’t need to have the doctor “approve” your purchase online or anything, you just need to know what the numbers are.

aw man that sucks! i love those glasses on you. SEE is new to me; my glasses broke while visiting the bf (or FIANCE whoa that word is still so new) so i needed a new pair, stopped in to their local store and got one from their 50% off section. they also knock off 50% off of special lenses if you need them too, which was totally awesome. good luck w/ figuring out what to do about getting a prescription! seriously though, those look so great.

Loved the Filmore’s but those are the winner! They are geeky cute – it looks like tortoise which would be great for your coloring.

Does anyone watch Top Chef? When they had the most recent Top Chef Masters, the spunky and fun Chef Susan Feniger wore some adorably funky round glasses with a tortoise stripe. I’m obsessed but can’t find out who they are made by. It is my mission.

Nicole, I absolutely loved the first one in the other blog post, I did a double take, I didn’t even think it was you! You looked really pretty. I like these too. I actually bought a pair of readers three years ago at a natural food store here in Rochester, NY and had lenses put in, and it only cost me $11 for the readers and $50 for my exam (I was in college). Still love ’em and they are nerdy chic. Good luck!

Oh those look so good on you! Also, I must say, you have lovely eyebrows. hehe

Think of it this way, sometime after baby number two when you are feeling bleh because you want to fit into your old pants you get to go get new glasses! That’ll put a little zing in your step :)

I’d say I like the Warby Parker ones much more than these ones. These ones are way too rounded on you, you look much better in something with a bit more of squared off look.

And that keyhole bridge just doesn’t seem to be working for you.

The Japhy frames were cute (the first ones were fun, if you wanted to go for that nerdy, oversized look). They seemed to fit your face well too. I hope you find a good pair, but definitely wait on the exam, pregnancy can change vision more than just a little.

I agree about the prescription changing. Just had my 2nd baby. Before getting pregnant, I was told I’d have to start wearing my glasses all of the time. I even got contacts for the first time in my life. Then, I got pregnant and I couldn’t see with my glasses on or contacts in. I stopped wearing them and it was like I didn’t need glasses. Granted, a week after having the baby, I needed to wear them again!

I think that if you take your current glasses to any eyewear store, like lenscrafters, they can test it to see what the prescription is. I did this when I moved to a new town and needed new glasses, I couldn’t remember what my prescription was, but the store associate found what it was in a matter of minutes.

If you’re mad for the frames, and worried they might not be available when you’re ready to fill the Rx, then just buy the frames for now. You can always take them in later and get the lenses put in.

  • Kathy
    October 6, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Here is a thought. Why don’t you have the frame shop read your Rx off your old glasses and fill the prescription that way. Look at this way: if you really are sick and tired of your old glasses, that is no fun to have to wait some indeterminant amount of time waiting for your eyes to settled down after pregnancy. If you were able to see just fine with your old Rx, just go ahead and get these filled. You can always change out the lenses in the future if your Rx has changed a lot.

When you have lived as long as I have being a glasses wearer, you learn what’s important and what isn’t. Go ahead and order those glasses. :)

I really like those. I got new glasses at Lenscrafters, ended up with Prada frames that I love, and used our AAA discount. I am partial to eyewear boutiques too, but sort of got converted… Just my two cents! ;)

    October 6, 2010 at 1:59 pm

I decided to give you my opinion on the glasses. I don’t think the rounded frames are flattering on you. I understand why you want to reflect your personal style in your eyewear, but sometimes you have to go with what’s flattering. You don’t want to detract from your beauty. Get something hip and stylish that is suited to your face. If you had several pairs, then you could have statement glasses (that’s what I used to do once I could afford it.) I like the Japhy frames on you. Have you ever tried Robert Marc frames? He is the expert in designing frames that look good on the face. You could find some pretty tortoiseshell frames that are lined in pink. And be sure to get the anti-reflective lenses. And remember…your glasses sit on your face all the time! It is NOT frivolous to spend a little extra on them. And good ones last forever.
    I love your posts!

That is a sad moment as I have a long standing love affair with eyeglasses. My most recent pair are by Anne et Valentin. Highly suggest! Hey!

These look adorable on you. I cannot say enough good things about SEE… I’ve bought two pairs of glasses from them and have had them for over a year now. I get compliments on a daily basis, they fit great, they look great, and the people in the store (well, mine at least) are so friendly. :)
