Style: October ’10

I tried that gray hat on recently and found it to be adorable, and I think it would be especially cute paired with these amazing shoes. Since that’s a lot of look already, I’d keep the rest simple with a sweater dress (maternity version here), a burnished gold necklace, and black tights. Then, because I can’t resist adding a little more color, I’d add a bright turquoise bag. Fun!

No New Glasses

OK, I’m a little bummed. No new glasses for me right now. My prescription has expired and the optician cannot release it to me. I’d go in for a new exam, but pregnancy can change your vision temporarily.

And I was leaning towards these from See (I stopped in there yesterday). They’re similar to the Fillmore frames from Warby Parker, but a little more flattering on me. Still geeky though.

How to Make My Halloween Mask for BHG

I mentioned last week that I would provide you with the instructions to make the same Halloween Mask that I made for Better Homes & Gardens. Halloween will be here in just a few weeks, but there is still plenty of time for you to create your own version of this mask!

Supplies

  • plain mask
  • wooden dowel rod
  • green acrylic craft paint
  • leaves and finely textured faux flowers for the main part of the mask
  • taller faux flowers for the floral pick
  • wire (preferably green florist’s wire)
  • hot glue gun and glue
  • small hole punch
  • green embroidery floss
  • small fake bird

Instructions

  • Start by punching holes along one side of the mask. This is where you will eventually attach the dowel rod to support your mask.
  • Paint a base coat of green on the mask and wooden dowel rod.
  • Glue faux leaves around the eyes and nose of the mask, leaving room along the outer edges.

  • If you wish, create eyelashes out of spindly petals (faux allium work well) and glue them around the eyes of the mask.

  • Use hot glue to attach the fake bird near the top of your mask.
  • Cut your finely textured faux flora into pieces and glue these to the mask, covering as much surface area as possible and tucking under the edges of the leaves and around your bird.

  • Next, create the floral pick that will attach to the support stick for the mask. I chose three branchy faux flowers of differing textures and used hot glue to attach them to each other.

  • Once the dowel rod is dry, attach the floral pick along the top with hot glue, then wrap with wire to secure.
  • For a more finished look, wrap green embroidery floss around the dowel rod where you attached the floral pick.
  • Attach the dowel rod to the mask with wire, and you’re done.

* If you like my mask you can vote for it every day at BHG.com until October 10.

New Glasses?

I’ve been wanting a pair of new glasses lately, so I thought I’d give Warby Parker a try. You get a pair of glasses with lenses for $95, and if you can try them out for free first. Sweet.

I really wanted the Fillmore style to work (remember, I included them in August’s style post?). I was hoping they’d be geeky-cool, but I don’t know if they work for me.

My shop assistant Erika tried them on and when I told her I liked them on her, she was incredulous. Her exact response: “Really? This is like the ‘before’ part of a makeover!”

So then I tried the Japhy frames because they come in pink, but I had to try them on in black because they aren’t sending out the limited edition colors to try. Yay? Nay? I think they’re nice, but a little average. Getting them in pink might fix that though.

And now I’m thinking I might like the Harper glasses in green, but I didn’t select those for my home try-on. Then of course, there are the free glasses… You know, the ones I’m already rocking. But where’s the fun in that, right?

I have to send back my trial glasses tomorrow, so I’m trying to make a decision. Seen any other cute glasses I should consider? Or do you like one of the pairs above?

International Antiques Fair at the Merchandise Mart

The International Antiques Fair at The Merchandise Mart is taking place this weekend (Oct. 1-4). They’ve introduced a new section to the show called The Emporium (which included the booths noted with an asterisk) filled with more affordable mid-century modern wares. Here are ten of my favorites from the show…
