Basement Bathrooms

Basement Bathroom Accessories

The design is finally coming together now. I grabbed a ton of accessories (mostly from west elm and Anthropologie) so I could see how everything would work together. Here’s a narrowed down selection:

Not all of those will make it into the room, but most will. Here are a few more things I picked up that didn’t make the cut:

I thought I’d love those zigzags, but they just didn’t feel right for the space. Remember, these are the main pieces:

Plumbing fixtures provided by Vintage Tub & Bath.

And I chose a paint color! I used Benjamin Moore’s “Olive Tree” for the walls and ceiling. Originally that color was going to go on the floor in the studio, play space, and tool/storage areas, but I chose Martha Stewart’s “Mossy Rock” instead.

I still need to find a mirror or wall-mounted medicine cabinet, maybe a shelf or two, and some art, but I’ll figure something out. I’m just glad to have moved beyond the initial indecision stage where there are just too many possibilities to even begin.

question…. you never really seem to shy away from spending gobs of money on name brand items. do you ever feel like it’s excessive or that you could be getting similar items for less and putting the money elsewhere? obviously people spend their money in the way they choose, but is saving money honestly not of any concern to you?

I save money where I can, if I find something of comparable style and quality. But no, I’m not afraid to spend a little more if it means getting something that I’m really happy with as opposed to something that ‘will do’. Plus in this case, the basement is all being done at once (so we’re spending a lot right now), but usually the decorating is done over a long period of time. Take our living room for example… the sofa was purchased 6 or 7 years ago, the rug is several years old, the Anthropologie chair was a floor model (and is also several years old), and then there are inexpensive things mixed in (like the thrifted end tables for $10 each).

I like that you don’t skimp on things just because they’re not uber-discounted. I am always impressed when people do things on amazingly small budgets, but I like that you keep it real, Nicole. When you’re doing a big reno like this, it’s nearly impossible to hunt down deals for everything. When is the big reveal happening?

I think the bathroom will be done fairly soon — within the next couple of weeks!

And also, it’s not like we’re rich or that we don’t have a budget. I just don’t think that a $12 hook from Anthro is going to bankrupt me, and it will look so much cuter than a generic hook that may have cost less. Little splurges like that are worth it to me.

You are obviously purchasing items that work within your budget. Affordability is a relative term and what may be reasonable for you may not be for someone else.

It is a privilege that you let us follow you as you redecorate your home. It comes off as sour grapes when someone is critical about the way you spend your family’s hard earned dollars.

I think people hear “anthropologie” and think every single thing in the store is $100+, not realizing they actually have a lot of options that are pretty on par with stores known for being budget-friendly, like Target. They also have a pretty extensive sale section.

I also have to say that Lindsey’s question could have been phrased a lot nicer.

I also own a bungalow in the Chicagoland area, and when we re-did our upstairs bathroom, we wanted to stay as true to the hundred year old house as possible. I found wonderful bathroom accessories at Lowes. They have a lot of great stuff, in many different finishes at a fraction of the cost of Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware. Good Luck.

I just got some black and white bathroom items from West Elm as well. they are quite reasonably priced; I was surprised. I did get a couple of the black marble porcelain accessories and the tribal bath mat.

You might check out the Tuxedo-striped wall hook at Anthropologie (type in B & W Wall Hook on their website). It would seem such a good fit for your bathroom, in light of your other choices. I picked one up when I was in the store last time. Love it.

Looks like it’s going to be very aatractive. I have a couple of those mustard yellow Anthropologie pulls, the same as your flower hooks, on a white cabinet in my living room, and they look great.

And I think you’re right, it’s a false economy to save $7 or so by buying a plain hook when a $12 Anthropologie one will elevate the design of the entire room.
