Basement Bathrooms

Fragile

The mirror I ordered for the basement bathroom arrived yesterday.

Yep, it arrived… just not in one piece. Thankfully the eBay seller is going to process a refund for me. But um, does anyone know where to go to get a new mirror cut? The frame came through all right, so I’m hoping I can just get new glass and that it won’t be terribly expensive.

I’ve had luck at glass shops – like those that do auto glass replacement that also have a storefront. You may want to try True Value or another local hardware store too. I know they cut glass to size so they may have mirror to cut too.

Bummer! Try Tayloe Glass, if they don’t do mirror they would likely know who could.

Thanks. They quoted about $50 which is a little more than I’d like, but not horribly expensive.

I took the mirror frame to them today and it’s only going to be $30! It should be ready in just a couple of days.

Oh no! Try a local glass store, they should be able to help you out with no problem!

Call around to any local glass shop. Most should be able to cut and/or bevel mirrors for reasonable prices.

I think art framers can do this as well, you could call that place on Harrison.

I know where I am from you can get it at any glass place. Like where you get windows replaced for your car. They sometimes do a custom fit for no extra charge.

I know you’re in Oak Park, but there’s a place in Lakeview that I like alot … can’t think of the name but it’s on Ashland, just south of Irving Park. They’re FAST and affordable!

Seconded! Ashland Glass. I had some custom mirrors cut for a bar cart last year and they were the best deal in Chicago.

Usually anywhere that does custom framing can get a mirror for you. Also, a lot of glass shops have mirror and will cut it custom. (At least, that’s where the frame shop gets it!)

Poo! Bet that box was fun to open…

I had a custom mirror cut at Lowe’s a couple years ago. I had to buy a whole sheet of it and then request the cuts (same as wood)…used the extra mirror to fill the 2 ‘negative spaces’ inside my molding on my bedroom doors.

Grrr! That is so disappointing. What a let down! Well at least it should be an easy fix. I’m so excited to see the finished product of your bathroom.

I would suggest a glass (think interior, such as shower doors) and/or mirror shop. I would find a member or associate member of your local Home Builders Association (Chicago’s is http://www.hbagc.com). They generally have more options (and better pricing) than your local home improvement store. Good luck!

I agree with Peaches… I had to replace a mirror in a frame once. I just went to Lowes and bought a sheet of mirror. They cut it to fit in the frame for you! It’s perfect and easy-peasy!

Will they cut an oval though, or just straight cuts?

Oh poo… didn’t realize you needed an oval! I’m not sure, but probably not. :(

I’ve had oval cut at an auto glass place. Just take the frame in so they can be accurate. Can’t wait to see it up.

Dana over at housetweaking had a similar thing happen. Her mirror arrived broken and they sent her another one. She then hang the original frame in her Guest/Craft/Playroom and I think it looks really great. I am not sure that you could do the same, but it may be worth a try!

Let us know how much it costs if you end up using Lowes please. I found this oval frame I love but want to use it as a mirror, I’m just not sure where to look for glass that won’t cost too much.

How will you attach the mirror once you get it? Special type of glue?

    • Making it Lovely
      March 1, 2011 at 7:27 pm

The mirror frame has little metal clips to hold everything together.

Oakbrook Glass. They’re fast and affordable. I purchased a cabinet at an outlet store with 2 broken glass panes and it only cost me $6 at Oakbrook Glass to have them cut. (I installed myself.)

We had glass panels cut for our built-in dining room hutch at the little hardware store in Forest Park on Madison… I think it’s True Value? They installed the glass into the doors we brought in, which was a huge help! Not sure if they do mirrors, but worth a shot.

Hi there! I’ve had many pieces cut both mirror and glass at Glassworks. They have a location in Lincoln Park and a warehouse in GLenview. Very reasonable prices too… but I think that may be a hike for you. The downtown location is near Land of Nod on North Ave.:)

It’s not expensive at all, any glass company can do it for you. Hopefully you don’t need it to be beveled, that’s where the cost comes in.

    Hi Nicole,
I recently discovered your blog and devoured all your archives from the very beginning!! I’m in love. Your taste is exquisite and you are so creative!! I’m also a fan of your charming and honest writing style.
I’m currently in the middle of fixing up a few furniture items, and I was wondering if you would mind sharing some of your sources for fabrics. You’ve mentioned ordering online a lot, and I would love to know where from!
    Thank you! :)

Oh, ugh…so glad you found a (relatively inexpensive…) solution!

That actually has me thinking…we want a HUGE mirror for the dining room, PB style (rustic). What are the chances I could MAKE a huge frame (not hard!) and then have a mirror cut to fit? That would be cheaper, I think….

What’s with packages these days? All of the boxes I have received or sent lately arrive all bashed up. One looked like it had been used for kickball practice. Uncool.

7 years good luck! All kidding aside, I’ve had quite a few mirrors shipped for clients over the years and about every 5th one is broken or has a little piece that’s fallen off. Unless they’re crated it’s a dicey proposition. WHo did you end up going with?

  • alisa
    March 2, 2011 at 10:29 am

Yup–every mirror I’ve ever purchased from eBay arrived broken. Now I expect it. My local art gallery/frame shop will replace the glass (with a bevel even!) and even finish it off with a professional backing and hanger for under 30 bucks every time. SO worth the trouble–especially on handmade/DIY mirrors (like my barnwood one) where the seller didn’t do a very professional job to begin with.

I’ve gone to the thrift store and bought a bigger mirror than the frame and had a glass company cut it. It only cost $15 total.

    Hi Nicole,
Don’t know if you found a solution, but I just drove by Bolingbrook Glass & Mirror today and thought of you. It’s right off 55, west of 355 and there’s a big sign that says open to the public. Good luck!

Maybe someone has mentioned it, but there’s a glass place (Curran, I think) on Odgen Ave. in Berwyn that may also do mirrors. (708) 795-8620. Hope it works out!

I just wanted to say thanks for having this post, and for having such helpful readers! A friend’s glass table top broke and wasn’t sure what to do, and I thought to myself ‘I think Nicole had to get some glass cut for something that broke for her…’ – I wasn’t even remotely expecting these comments to be so helpful!!

    Thanks, Nicole! :)
