Style: May 2011

This is a prettier version of what I’ve been wearing lately. I wrote about that top on Babble not long ago, and I’m still loving it. It’s nursing friendly, and I like to wear it tucked into a skirt (though it looks great over jeans too). The top calls for a long necklace, and a leather belt polishes the look when the shirt is tucked in. Metallic flats are another way to add some polish (why go for basic black?), and I’d add a little gold ring too. Finally, I’d carry a big red bag to keep things interesting with a bold color. And add red lipstick. And liquid eyeliner. Done.

I think I need to step it up a little around here. The tailored skirt and belt are really all I’m missing from this outfit (I have reasonable facsimiles for the rest), but compared to the lazy jersey skirt I’ve been wearing, they make all the difference. I haven’t been buying much clothing over the last three years, other than some necessary maternity wear, because my body has been in a constant state of change. First I was pregnant, then I was nursing for over a year and I lost the baby weight plus twenty pounds, but then I turned right around and got pregnant again. Now I’m nursing again, but carrying some extra weight and feeling chubby. I hadn’t been particularly inspired by fashion recently, but it feels nice to look nice and I would love that skirt and belt in the size I am now.

Love the bag. Love the mood board…keep on nursing, that weight will drop in no time, maybe plus 30 this time.

After nursing baby #2, I am back to my college weight. Gotta love extended nursing!

In the meantime, feel good about your post August body, Nicole…

it’s a lovely combination. i do love a good red bag. i remember those years of constant change, needing to dress for babies and milk! it’s something to look forward to – buying clothes that you know you can wear til they are falling apart!

I love that belt. Very nice combination of everything, too. I need to try a pencil skirt for a change. Good ideas all around!

i love all your style boards and this one is no exception. that belt is super cute. i’m in the same place you are too, with a two year old and a newborn, I kind of feel like I’ve been out of the style game for about three years. I never thought I would feel this way before I had kids, but it really does change things.

Gah! Love those shoes! Loving J Crew shoes is a sickness, because I can’t convince myself to spend that much on flats. Would love to know if they hold up well…then they might be worth it, but flats seem to die a quick death on my feet. Super cute combo, love the ring too.

Those fold over jersey skirts are my go to hot weather skirt (luckily I don’t work during the summer months). I love them, but they are definately more like a dressy version of yoga pants.

But really, I want the bag. I guess I need to start commuting to a different, much-better-paying job ;)

Being home with my baby (as opposed to working outside the home) along with still nursing and trying to lose the baby weight definitely has me in a bit of a style rut, to say the least!

I’m not sure I would feel comfortable in a tucked-in top and belt, but I love this look – and the red bag, metallic flats, and tassel necklace have got my name written all over them! Thanks for the inspiration, as usual, Nicole! xo Laura

I love the skirt and shirts – working from home – that is the type of thing I wear all the time!

I also love the bag but I am going to go with this one from JcPenney – http://jcp.is/lgWQxG

It is <10% of the price but still adorable.
With a JCPenney coupon for $10 off it would be $30 not including shipping.

Oh, one other thing – I haven’t had much luck with J Crew shoes. They don’t hold up well for me. The soles have come apart and I had one pair that the seams came undone after 2-3 days of wear. That might just be me though.

there are many things that old navy puts out that are questionable, but over the last decade or so i have found that somehow everything they make in a slub knit is adorable. funny how that works.
