My Life

My Five-Minute Face

Hello, my name is Nicole. I’m a blogger and a mother of two, and I get dressed and wear makeup every day.

Am I in the minority among my fellow bloggers? Among my fellow moms? Sometimes it seems that way. I just feel better when I take the time to get ready in the morning, plus I like the feeling of being able to get up and go at a moment’s notice. And bonus: I’m not embarrassed to answer the door!

Here’s what I tend to use on a daily basis. It seems like a lot when it’s all written out, but I’m done in five minutes or less.

Moisterizer/SPF

I used to love Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer – Combination/Oily but they changed the formula recently and I’m not happy with it. It used to help control oil, and now it almost seems I’m worse off when I use it. If you have a recommendation for an alternative, I’d love to hear it.

Concealer

I like Boi-ing by Benefit. It covers circles and blemishes, and I use my ring finger to apply it.

Foundation

I have used MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation in NC20 for years, after my friend Tyrone (yes, you’re reading that right) recommended it to me. I’ve experimented with other brands and finishes (in fact, I’m eying MAC Studio Tech), but I always come back to Studio Fix.

Blush

I love blush. Bright pink cheeks are so cute! I like NARS Blush in Desire, but if I’m in need of something more understated, I choose Deep Throat. (Golly, NARS is risqué.)

Eyeliner

I like the sharp precision of liquid eyeliner (I started using Écriture de Chanel after Ree gushed about it, but now her post seems to be gone). Sometimes though, I also like the softness of smudged pencil, and in that case I use ALMAY Intense I-Color Eyeliner in Black Pearl.

Eyeshadow

I usually skip this step because I feel like eyeshadow just isn’t a good look for me. It’s likely that I just need to learn how to apply it in a more flattering way. One color that I do like quite a bit though is MAC Satin Frost.

Mascara

Maybelline Great Lash, Very Black. A classic for a reason.

Lipstick

My favorite! My friends don’t tend to wear lipstick. I guess it’s seen as old-fashioned? No matter. I brand-hop and experiment with color all the time. I wrote about my quest to find my perfect lipstick shade, and I’m still loving Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Daring Pink as my go-to, everyday color. A few other recent favorites: MAC Lady Danger, NARS Funny Face, and Maybelline Hooked on Pink Lipgloss.

* Edit: A lot of people wonder about wearing lipstick and having a baby that you want to smooch all day. I just withhold my affection in the name of looking good. Kidding! I skip the lipstick most of the time and just swipe it on before I leave the house.

Makeup Brushes

I use MAC brushes. Quality tools make a difference.

So tell me… am I in the minority? Do you wear makeup everyday, sporadically, just on special occasions, or not at all? And if you have favorites or tips, please share!

Not a mom, and I do have a leave-the-house job, but I wear makeup every day and have since I was about 13. I don’t have great skin, and haven’t since puberty kicked in, so I feel very self-conscious without it. I’m more comfortable without it than I used to be (I rarely wear it on weekends anymore), but for work and such I still put on my game face.

I did quit wearing mascara last year, though. I just curl my eyelashes now, and I find my eyes a lot less bothered at the end of the day. Plus, wearing mascara is now a very easy way to glam up my look for a nice event.

I’m not a blogger by profession but I’m a work-from-home mom. I almost always manage to put on my face for the day, but it’s the cute hair that usually escapes me. Wish I would just throw in the towel and cut it short but when I do fix it….I love it being just a little longer. :)

I work from home too and I don’t wear any make-up, though I didn’t even where it when I worked in an office. I also tend to wear pajama pants and t-shirts too now!

I really only wear make-up for special occasions and that’s pretty much it. I feel like I tend to breakout more when I wear make-up and I always feel the make-up on my face.

I would love a recommendation for a moisturizer that helps control oil too and bonus if it has sunscreen in it.

Putting on make up always seems like a TASK. This is good way of looking good and also feeling good about yourself. I agree with the black eye liner… I used to use eye shadow with a brush but since discovering the ease of using a pencil (well not really a pencil but the plastic adaptor with the colour inside that you turn up to use) my routine is WAY faster. It also stays on better so I don’t have to worry if I need to straight from work to dinner.

I will echo the MAC-love, especially the tools. I got hooked after having my makeup ‘done’ at the MAC counter six years ago for my sister’s wedding, and bought the foundation and blush brushes (along with the Studio Fix and impulse seafoam eyeshadow).

I lost the brushes in my latest move, and have been budget-buying about seven different tools to attempt to recreate the same effect, all for no joy. Obviously, it would have been less expensive to just buy the good stuff again . . . ahhh, hindsight. You’re a pain in the butt.

Also: It’s almost noon, and I’m still in PJ’s. I just don’t have your dedication:)!

Not a mum yet but, yes make up every day (basic things like yourself) but just to go out. E.g. work or pleasure

I rarely wear make up at home or make an effort to look nice at home which is starting to bother me a lot and I reckon I should change it.
Every time I see how lovely you look on a daily basis, it makes me wanna change this lazy attitude of mine. Plus you’re totally right: always read if the door rings!

Do you have a separate wardrobe to stay home (old ugly clothes that you wouldn’t wear outside the house) and a nicer one to go out? Maybe it is just me? LOL

Unless I’m deathly ill, I never go a day without makeup. I don’t feel right without it. I also love lipstick, but you’re right. It doesn’t seem very common anymore. So I almost feel silly if I have a dark lip color, even though I think it looks awesome!

That darn NARS. I like their Orgasm lip gloss, but I’m almost afraid to wear it because what if someone asks me what shade I’m wearing?!

i had the same problem with my current moisturizer suddenly failing me. i just ordered this spf/moisturizer sample set from sephora for $25 to find my new summer lotion. i haven’t gotten around to trying them all, but i really like the mattifying oil control so far. maybe you could find something in this set too?

    Loved reading your recommendations!

I don’t wear makeup unless I’m in the mood to do myself up or if there’s a reason – going out to dinner or a party, etc.. I bet it does make you feel great to get all pretty but if I wear makeup on a regular basis it tends to break me out.

Would love to hear what other people use for moisturizer now that it’s almost summer and time for SPF. (Yeah, I’m one of those folks who only gets semi-religious w/ the stuff once the sun comes out. Bad I know!)

About lipstick: I don’t think it’s old fashioned, but I kiss my kids too much to wear it! But I miss it.

As a work-at-home mother, I admit I got really really lax about my appearance. Recently I’ve been upgrading my wardrobe & trying to deal with my problem hair. I haven’t really gone back to makeup though. I just hate dealing with mascara at night, even though I look better with it.

The one thing I’ve stuck with is powder, which I need for my superoily skin. I’m also looking for a good nongreasy SPF moisturizer; everything I use leaves so much shine. I go through so many of those blotting papers each day.

It’s not a moisturizer, but I have found that Neutrogena Ultrasheer Dry-Touch sunscreen virtually eliminates the oil on my skin. But I can’t use it around my eyes–at some point it migrates & then it really bothers them. And I smell like sunscreen all day if I use it, which makes me self-conscious.

If you can do it, then there’s hope for the rest of us that aren’t moms yet and are terrified of turning losing all sense of self once we have kids. My mom was a working mom and always managed to look nice – makeup, great outfits and all – but I still get a little scared when I think of how much time I already don’t have in the morning to get ready and adding kids into the mix!

I love Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer. I use the SPF 50 version because I have paleness in spades, but it also comes in an SPF 30 version. That plus my usual pressed powder (Cover Girl Clean), and T-zone oil seems to stay under control all day.

I am not a mom and do not work from home, but I can understand how it must be important to have your make-up routine to feel good every day. I wear make-up every day, but nothing on my lips because I drink from my 32 oz. water bottle all day. I like Stila lip glazes for going out. I have oily/combination skin and recently started oil cleansing and it is a miracle. I found the recipe on ReadyMade and did a post on my food blog, because I had to share. My skin used to get oily in the middle of the day, but not any more. You can check it out if you like. Love your blog so much. I’m a mom of 3 and I wear makeup everyday. I didn’t realize this was a big deal until my oldest began school this year. I was literally the only mom who showed up with makeup and hair done in the mornings for drop-off. All the other mom’s were in work-out gear, ponytails, and no makeup. I definitely felt like the odd-mom-out. While I’ve struggled with the sideways glances, ultimately, I feel better when I’m put-together, and everything feels a little less stressful on those hectic mornings.

I mostly wear makeup everyday but I’m not a mom, so I can’t relate to that aspect. However, I feel the same way you do. I just feel better about myself when I take a few minutes to do it. I also have oily/combo skin and I use Dermalogica’s skin smoothing cream moisturizer. It’s pricier than drug store brand but one tube lasts at least 6 months. I am also really obsessed with this bronzer from Colorscience called “wild to mild” or something like that. It instantly evens out your skin tone and I just wear a little powder over it.

I’m a full time working mom so I never leave the home from Mon-Fri without make up.
My must have is eye liner as they never fail to brighten my eyes and of course I cant do without my boi-ing too! It hides all traces that I’ve been up til late at night.

    May 24, 2011 at 11:01 am

I always wear makeup when I am working or have other reasons to leave the house. Usually just concealer, powder, mascara, and blush, adding more if I’m”going out”. But if I’m home for the day, there’s a good chance I’m cleaning or doing other work around the house and getting gross, so I don’t bother.

My face gets pretty oily (more so lately because I’m pregnant), and I have been loving the Target brand oil free SPF 15 moisturizer. It’s the generic version of the same from Neutrogena, which is only a couple dollars more. I didn’t notice a difference between the two, so I’ve been using the cheaper one.

I work full time 24/7 (day job between 9 and 5 and if mothering has an off-the-clock time, I’ve yet to find it).

I don’t wear make up and I’ve never been embarrassed to answer the door.

That would presume that 1) a stranger at the door would notice the difference between my made-up face and my real face. Probably not. Or 2) that someone I know would think I should be embarrassed to answer the door. I hope I have no such callers approaching my home.

But I applaud all you ladies who put more effort into it. I have looked like crap since pregnancy and (see paragraph 1) it doesn’t seem like I have much time to put into looking otherwise. #IamFailure

I’m a stay-at-home blogger and mother of a 9 pound dog (haha) and I’m in the “get dressed and makeup-ed everyday category — though! there are THOSE days that turn into “pajamas + ponytail day” (particularly rainy ones).

My new favorite product is L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base. It’s aaaamazing! It works well with any kind of foundation or even on it’s own (which is what I do a lot).

Ever since I cut my hair very short a few months ago, I’ve made an effort to wear makeup and/or earrings every day so that people don’t mistake me for a twelve-year-old boy. In my quest to find the perfect red lipstick, I’ve fallen in love with MAC Ruby Woo. I also ue Benefit’s Boi-ing and I’m tempted to try that liquid liner.

I do not have kids, but I do wear makeup on a daily basis and it only takes me 5 mins.
Some of my fav’s are Lancome Hypnose mascara, MAC powder blush in Margin, and for a good substitute for eyeshadow MAC paint in stilife, it’s got a pearl finish. It’s supposed to be a base for your shadow, but it actually looks really nice on it’s own. And I also use Olay complete moisturizer with SPF. Though I use the version for sensitive skin, and I’ve been happy with it for years.

I LOOOOVE posts like this. I’m always curious about what products people like to use. I too like to wear makeup, and feel more polished with it on, even though I go for a very minimal, no-makeup effect. I’m with you on not “getting” eyeshadow. The other night I tried to do a smoky eye, with dark blue shadows (we were going out). I ended up wiping it off since it made me look like an eighth grader or a hooker. Or both.

I have a product that I love lately. It’s just a drugstore item: Covergirl’s Outlast lip stuff, in shade 545, which is very natural looking. It’s one of those color it in and then put the moisturizing gloss over it lipstick-y situations, and I think it’s amazing. It’s not drying and the color really does stay on all day. I reapply the gloss part as necessary throughout the day, which I don’t mind I like applying lipgloss. The best part about this stuff is that it doesn’t come off on my kiddos or husband when I smooch them.

Good for you for making the daily effort.

5 minutes… you are good! All that takes me 10, but I wear eye shadow. I have 19 month old twins and put makeup on every morning too… before breakfast even. It just makes me feel better and I’m sure my husband appreciates it even if he would never say it. I have very oily skin and the only eye liner I have ever tried that doesn’t run and last all day is Maybelline waterproof Ultra Liner.

Thanks to you I have been rocking both the Revlon lipsticks you recommended…and am loving them both!

As for moisturizers, I swear by Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer with SPF. It is a bit pricey, but I have been using it for years and adore how light it is. If you are oily in your t-zone you may wish to avoid putting it there (I usually skip my nose and apply everywhere else) http://www.kiehls.com/Ultra-Facial-Moisturizer/351,default,pd.html?start=3&cgid=face-moisturizers Kiehl’s is great too b/c they give you samples of things to try.

Go Nicole! I fully agree – getting “ready” in the morning when you have small kids is ESSENTIAL to a mother’s mental health. As the mom of a 4-year-old and a 4-week-old, I take three minutes to throw on some basic makeup every morning, even if I don’t have plans to go anywhere that day.

Oh, and I’m a fan of Laura Mercier’s oil free tinted moisturizer, SPF 20. Protection, moisture and color in one – a real timesaver!

I’m a sporadic make-up wearer and it’s almost exclusively foundation, lip color, mascara for me. (But I’m not a mom and I work in an office).
I have normal-oily skin too and I’m a big fan of this tinted moisturizer (SPF 15).
    http://www.physiciansformula.com/en-us/productdetail/face/tinted-moisturizers/02156.html
I usually cheat and don’t even wear foundation over it. It feels almost like I’m wearing nothing and it smells amazing, almost kind of a citrus smell.

I work out of the home and do wear make-up everyday. I get myself ready every morning before waking my daughter to take her to daycare.

My go-to face is very similar to yours – MAC concealer, MAC Studio Fix powder+foundation, MAC blush & eyeshadow and Maybelline Great Lash. (Can you tell I LOVE MAC?)

As for moisturizer, I also have combination/oily skin and find that Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15 is what works best for me. I’ve tried other brands (including Clinique and La Roche Posay) and always come back to Aveeno.

Five minute face, but I don’t wear eye-shadow because my lids are naturally shaded. I’ve had make-up appliers try to remove my “eye makeup” before they get started. I figure if the professionals can’t tell neither can anyone else. I wear NARS orgasm blush, and yes, racy names. But I always remember what color I wear!

I have 2 young kids who wake me up early! I am lucky if I get out of PJs before 9am, and I rarely wear makeup (but didn’t in my pre kid life either), BUT I have been dabbling in it since I hit my 30s, and I find it hard to wear makeup in such a way that does not shout to the world that I am wearing it. I need more practice. I have been looking for a concealer I like for ages, so thanks for sharing you favorite! I feel a sephora order coming on.
I am usually just a lipgloss person, but I do like lipstick, it seems so classy and retro. I ordered “medieval” from the lipstick queen after reading in the WSJ that it is the perfect red for everyone (quite a statement!). And (when I remember to actually wear it), it’s very pretty and natural – just deepens/enhances my natural lip color — I recommend it!

Loving this post! :) I’m a work-at-home mom of one and I need to learn how to put my face on in 5 minutes because as you mentioned, I’m embarrassed to answer the door most of the time! Hehe. Do you put your make up on and get ready first thing after waking up? I’m curious because I tend to wake up and go straight to cooking or cleaning and the to-dos become endless where I start thinking, “eh, not today”.

I have used Cetaphil daily facial moisturizer w/SPF15 for years. I feel like I’m attendign a support group: “Hello, I’m Jill. I’m a mother of two and I put makeup on every day, even if we’re just going to play in the yard.” haha However, my makeup routine is about 3 minutes and consists mostly of Bare Escentuals products (bisque concealer has changed my life, I swear)and I use it primarily to cover up the dark circles under my eyes. I save eye makeup for special occasions…but I’ve been blessed with naturally long, dark lashes otherwise I’d wear at least mascara every day. I need to try that lipstick…

I am a momma…in 3 weeks of 2! I think make up is a must. For me at least. I dont feel put together or polished without it.

I LOVE Mac Studio Fix but I rock the liquid. I’m more of a full coverage dry skin kinda gal and MAC brushes really do make the difference. You cant spend good money on make up and then apply them wrong.

  • Lorilyn
    May 24, 2011 at 11:42 am

I’m in the not-a-mother-but-work-everyday category and have been applying make-up regularly since middle school.

Here are a couple of basic and useful things I’ve learned along the way that keep my make-up looking it’s best.

    1) Skin prep is crucial. Before applying make-up, I use a gentle cleanser then use a moisturizer with a sunscreen in it. After I moisturize I let it set for five minutes before applying any make-up.

    2) Splurge for a great concealer. I follow Bobbi Brown’s advice and conceal before I apply my foundation. (I use Bobbi Brown concealer as well.) The reason for this is once I have a light layer of concealer on, my skin doesn’t look as terrible as I thought it did and I’m more light handed with the foundation.

    3) Use foundation sparingly. Only apply it where you need i, and trust me, NO ONE needs it covering every inch of skin on their face for day wear. For application I use a rounded foundation brush and gently press it into my skin on my troubled spots.

    4) A little white shimmer will open up your eyes. I always apply a bit of white shimmery eyeshadow to the inner corners of my eyes to help brighten and open up tired eyes. Which I seem to have even when I’m not tired.

All in all, the entire process takes about 15 minutes and really helps me feel fresh, confidence, and ready to kick some butt throughout the day.

Every.single.day. Whether I will be seen in public or not, I wear make-up. I heart Clinique, have only used it for the last few years & finally found the solution for my oily-acne-proned skin (no more breakouts or oil probs). I use their foundation, powder & cleanser w/Smashbox’s primer (eyes & face). I use drugstore mascara (greatlash), shadows (not brand loyal here), lipstick (maybeline Totally Toffee), I like Clinique liners, they stay put.

I’m a minimalist, but I usually wear some. I really like Almay Positively Radiant tinted moisturizer; it does a good cover-up without being cakey and it’s SPF 30. (And cheap to boot, so it’s hard to beat!)

I find the combo of Retin-A plus L’oreal Ideal Skin Genesis with SPF 15 works good for me. Retin-A controls the oil, refines the pores & takes care of crazy acne flareups.

I swear by Maybelline Eye Studio eyeshadow. It comes in a quartet, such great colors. I have gray-blue eyes, I’m partial to the greens and grays.

I tend to be lazy. I do at least throw on jeans and a clean shirt when I leave the house but when I am home I am in my super comfy clothes. I also only really wear makeup when I go out with friends and for special occasions. My hubs prefers a clean face and hair up in a pony tail or bun so that feeds into my laziness.

i love seeing what other people have in their makeup bags (i’m so nosy!).

i usually wear as little makeup as i can get away with: a brush of loose mineral powder, blush that doubles as lipgloss, a couple of sweeps of blendable gold eye shadow + i try not to skip my brow pencil app + mascara :)

i’ve had good luck with john master’s organics spf 30 lotion. it takes a bit of work to blend in, but stays put!

I’m with you girl! I like having make-up on so I can just get up and go when needed. I use Bare Essentials and am IN LOVE with their products. It also takes me about 5 minutes as well. I feel like my skin has only gotten better since using their products. I have to admit, it was a little strange going from liquid to powder make-up but I will NEVER go back!

This has nothing to do with the products I use, but I find that Trader Joe’s makeup remover is the best I have ever used! They are wipes and very affordable. It usually only takes one wipe to get all my makeup off.

I love makeup and used to wear it basically every day (since high school). I recently quit, though, because I felt that it was making my skin break out and the longer I go without makeup, the better my skin looks – negating the need for makeup!

I also find that if I only wear mascara once a week (for going out on weekends) that they get a chance to grow / stay long. So now I’ve switched my makeup routine to once a week only. Although this doesn’t mean my morning routine is zero – there’s no hiding my face so I try harder to get enough sleep and fix my hair and dress nicely so I can look put together at the office!

Sporadically for me but I do have some good ol’ standbys that I have been using since jr high! Like Cover Girl perfect point eyeliner and cover girlliplicks lipgloss in a hint of bronze.

For foundation and powder I prefer Bobbi Brown, but when funds are low I use Boots foundation and Physicians Formula powder. Mac for the fun stuff like funky eye shadows and blush that pops…plus a few standby Mac lipsticks!

I also have a 5-minute face that goes:

    – Alba Sea Moss Moisturizer
    – Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel (as a primer – works AMAZINGLY and so cheap)
    – Some sort of foundation. In between ones at the moment – got samples of Make Up For Ever HD, hate it, so currently using a blend of two Revlon and a Cover Girl one
    – Brows – always, always brows. I use the Laura Mercier double-ended eyebrow brush and an eyeshadow from Yaby called Firewood – it’s the perfect not-too-dark color and it’s like 3 dollars
    – Lashes curled + Fiberwig mascara from Sephora – a tube mascara that makes your lashes SO long and doesn’t flake or smudge ever ever ever
    – Blush – usually Benetint
    – Highlight – currently using and loving Dior Shimmer Star in Rose Diamond on my cheekbones, cupid’s bow, bridge of nose and below my brows

That also sounds like kind of a lot of things but it goes on so quick and I feel ready to go!

I also have a 5 minute make up routine that I wear each and everyday (and have for years). I don’t feel very put-together if I leave the house without it. My everyday arsenal includes moisturizer, concealer, foundation, eye liner, and mascara.

I usually add lip gloss, eye shadow, and blush if I’m going out though. I grew up using Great Lash, it was my mother’s favourite (and she’s still wears it every day!).

I can’t start my day without Clinique’s Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief. That pink gel cream is the greatest thing for my combination (but mostly oily skin). It also wakes up and brightens my skin every morning.

I’m not a stay at home mom or blogger, but I started wearing Bare Escentuals in college and it is still my go-to. It lasts forever and it’s fairly good for my skin.

I’ve never worn lipstick or gloss regularly, because I hate the sticky feel on my lips. Chapstick is usually the most I can handle.

Lipstick old fashioned! How sad! I have three kids and just started a blog. I have found that I need to keep a pretty tight ship to accomplish things. I wake up at 5:50, run for 20 minutes on the track behind our house, kiss my husband goodbye, shower, blog and get ready all before the first kid is up. If I don’t get makeup on before they wake up it might not happen. I’m a better mama/blogger/woman/house cleaner if I am ready and feel good about myself. Although sometimes I get dressed in a nice shirt and comfy pants until I leave the house!

I work from home and have a two year old boy who now tries to put on makeup too! I do at least minimal makeup during the week, just to make me feel good. My husband travels every week so I try to take it up a notch on the weekends.

I am a big fan of Alba Botanica moisturizers for my face. It’s s drugstore brand and they have it at Target. It’s awesome! I also love the Sonia Kashuk (sp?) tinted SPF moisturizer at Target. Eliminates the need for foundation.

I also use the Bobbi Brown shimmer brick and just quickly brush it on my cheekbones and eyes. I also wear a lip liner/lipstick combo to save time. Lately it’s been Bobbi Brown lip crayon. Maybeline mascara is the only way to go!

I’m not a blogger but I am a stay at home mom and I wear makeup every single day. Not a lot at all; just enough to make me look fresh and put together.
I haven’t had time to do any real makeup shopping in *years,* so I’ve been using mostly drug store brands.

Burt’s Bees lotion, Maybelline Smooth Mousse foundation, Bobbi Brown blush, Victoria’s Secret brand bronzer occasionally, Covergirl for pencil eyeliner, Smashbox pen for liquid, Maybelline Falsies mascara.
I hardly ever wear eye shadow, but when I do I like light, slightly shimmery neutrals. I can’t stand anything but chapstick on my lips.

I work from home too, and wear makeup every day- it just removes the excuse of not taking pictures/making videos/even leaving my house.

I don’t wear mascara, but do wear eyeshadow. I prefer lipstick to most glosses (except if they are just for shine/moisturizing)- if I want color, I want it to stay in place! I really want one with a nice orange to it- seems so springy.

No eye shadow? I am impressed by this! I have been trying to go with the “less is more” mantra but I always get carried away as soon as I get my brush out. Lately my makeup goal is foundation, under eye concealer, mascara, chapstick and pink blush.

I’m with you – I wear it every day. I too use Great Lash mascara. I also wear (old fashioned) lipstick and pink blush! It doesn’t take long and it gives me so much more confidence during the day. And I’m totally with you on the eyeshadow – I think it’s because I’m so pale it just doesn’t work for me.

I wear make-up everyday of my life. I had it on in the delivery room when my kids were born, and the first thing I did after baby #3 was born was touch up my Nars Orgasm! I just love playing with it. But I never take more than 5 minutes to put it on, because if I do, one of the kids somewhere will destroy something.

I think I am going to try your MAC Studio Fix. I used to use MAC Mineralize Satinfinish but stopped to try something new but I always did like it.

And my go-to cheapie mascara is L’Oreal Voluminous, foreva and eva!

Hi, mom of 5 here. I work outside the home and try to keep my routine simple. I use cetaphil sensitive cleanser. Laura Mercier primer, moisturizer and powder. Burt’s Bees honey vanilla lip balm.

If I am going out, Nars orgasm blush, Clinique eyeshadow in violet, Sephora violet eyeliner, great lash mascara and Clinique almost kissed gloss.

I used to only wear mascara and a fun, bright, different color of lipstick every day. I love bold lips! I stopped once I had my little girl (she’s 20mos.), because I kiss her all the time and I didn’t like the idea of lipstick all over her. I figured I’d rather kiss my baby than wear lipstick. Funny though, now I wear foundation/powder/eye make-up more often… usually just on the days I go into the office.

I definitely get “fully dressed” in something I would feel cute going out in. I fully agree with your sentiment: “I like the feeling of being able to get up and go at a moment’s notice.” I think this is especially helpful with a new baby, because it can be so easy to just stay at home since getting yourself dressed, dressing/feeding/burping/changing/loading the baby up can feel like an insurmountable obstacle to getting out of the house. And getting out of the house maintains sanity!

I wear make-up everyday, regardless of if I’m leaving the house or not. I feel rubbish when I look in the mirror and I look tired or like I haven’t made an effort. I think perhaps I left it off a bit for a few days after I had Torin (when everyone expects you to not look your best anyway!), but then I resumed my daily routine as it really helped me to feel more normal, and like I was getting at least a little bit of pampering! I use the same products as you (though different brands), though I tend to only wear eye-liner if I’m going out in the evening, and I wear lipgloss rather than lipstick.

I sometimes wish that I’d never started wearing make-up, as it’s so noticeable when I’m not wearing it, but I don’t think there’s really anything wrong with it. Yeah, sure it’d be great if I looked great without it, but I don’t think I do, so on it goes!

Ok so you get dressed and put on makeup…but do you shower?? ;) I never leave the house without makeup but I do occasionally lock myself in the house and NOT answer the door. Haha! My routine is extremely similar to yours down to the oil of olay…guess I need to pay attention to see if I notice a diff!

I’m a stay-at-home-mom, and always put makeup on. My 5-minute face is: wash with Cetaphil or Purpose, CeraVe moisturizer, Neutrogena Skin-Clearing foundation, concealer, L’Oreal extreme eyeliner in gray, L’Oreal Voluminous mascara, Neutrogena blush/brozer in Rosy Glow, and my perfect lipstick is Clinique Ginger Frost or Revlon “Blush”.

I always wear moisturizer, foundation and curl my eyelashes. Then, if I’m going outside the house, I’ll add a swipe of mascara and use the Mayballine gel eyeliner. LOVE that stuff…it’s so smooth and easy to use. A bit of eyeshadow and then, depending on where I’m going, either lipstick or lipstain. Sometimes just gloss. It also depends on my mood and what I’m wearing.

Many girls experiment with a ton of makeup in their teens, but I was the opposite. Instead, I started with nothing at 20 and have been trying to add a new component or two every decade. By the time I’m retired I’ll have a whole “face” to put on! I’m now 40 and do sunscreen moisturizer, Prescriptives foundation, Almay eyeliner and mascara, and light cream blush. Recently, I’ve had issues with certain sunscreens causing a reaction, so I switched to Keys Soap Solar Rx sunblock, which I found through the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/. So far, so good, and I’m planning to consult the database every time I need a new product, even if it isn’t bothering me.

Wow. Am I the only one in blog land who never wears makeup, ever?

Firstly, it’s not good for my skin. Secondly, I have philosophical objections to it. Thirdly, even if it’s only five minutes a day, I’ve got others things I’d rather do with the time. Fourthly, I’d rather spend the money on other things.

It’s not like I don’t take care of myself. I do my hair every day. (well as much as you can ‘do’ curly hair). I wear nice clothes and shoes every day, usually a dress or skirt, even high heels if the situation warrants them. Do all the usual showering/grooming. Even pluck the stray hairs from my upper lip. But makeup? Not on the priority list at all.

Does Lubriderm SPF 15 moisturizer and chapstick count as makeup? I am the single mom of a toddler and work in a law office, but I can’t say that my ‘beauty’ routine varies much whether I’m at home or work. Maybe a little Cover Girl lip gloss if I’m traveling for work(the kind that tastes minty; not sure if they even make that anymore but I still have a tube in my briefcase). Colors just never seem to turn out the same as they look in packages, and eye makeup is futile with strong seasonal allergies for 3 seasons!! Hats off to those of you that take the time to primp each day; and can match handbags with shoes. Haven’t gotten that down yet either LOL

I’m a working mom and wear makeup every day but try to take a day off on the weekends….I used to hoard and love lip gloss but since having my child -I never wear it anymore because I hate how it gets on him when I give him kisses (which is all day long!) How do you moms wear lipstick or gloss with your children? I miss how it feels and how it made my lips look, so now I just wear it when I go out or am away from him.
The moisturizer that works best for me is Dermalogica active moist – really lightweight formula for my sometimes oily skin. I’ve tried them all but keep coming back to that one (even tho it has parabens) — just cant find another comparable moisturizer that is more organic.

I would like to wear makeup every day, but after trying (and failing) since high school to find a foundation that doesn’t sit on top of my face and make my skin look all patchy, I’ve pretty much given up. I still do mascara and sometimes powder but that’s about it. I’ve been thinking about trying a primer and seeing if that helps, I’ll have to try Paige’s recommendation.

I’m an everyday makeup girl; I love it!….I don’t wear it if I know I’ll be working in the yard all day, or cleaning house all day, but otherwise something is smeared on my face! It just makes me feel prettier and better about myself.
I love color and like to play with eyeshadow colors and lip colors. I’m a huge fan of lined lips with gloss. My favorite product is Loreal Crayon Petite Lip Liner in Berries/Mauves – it’s the best lip liner I have ever used.
Another favorite – Bobbi Brown Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush.

I work part-time, and I often don’t wear makeup around the house, although I always do if I’m going out, even if it’s just to the post office or something. When I’m going to work I do it on the bus; I wouldn’t have time otherwise! I use jojoba or almond oil as a moisturizer since I don’t like all the parabens and other chemicals they often put in such things. Burt’s Bees natural sunscreen. Bare Escentuals bareminerals foundation, just under the eyes and on any reddish spots. I have used it for years. I always wear blush because it makes me feel pretty and glowing. But it varies whether I put on mascara, eyeshadow, liner or lipstick. Always two or so of those, but not usually all at once. I have started wearing less makeup now because my husband is grossed out by it. So I have to make it really subtle in the hopes he won’t notice! Which is a shame because I love a glamorous red lip! Anyone else have that problem?

I wear makeup every day, even on the weekends, and feel naked without out. I use Bioelements moisturizer, Lorac foundation, MAC under eye concealer, Benefit pressed power, Benefit eye shadows in different shades, and Laura Mercier blush and lipstick. I wear makeup every day and pretty much have since I was allowed to wear it in high school (altho I used to sneak some blush at my Catholic grade school). I also used to use an Olay moisturizer, but they got rid of the spf 15 stuff I liked (Regenerist?)and the spf 50 made my skin feel strange. I started using MAC’s Studio Moisture Fix SPF 15 (gotta have sunscreen!)and have no complaints. Plus it rec’d a good review from the Cosmetic Cop (http://www.cosmeticscop.com/).

I also use the same MAC Studio Fix – in NC20. I think I’ll check out your concealer as the MAC stuff I tried never really seemed to do anything.

I use blush, too, plus eyeliner (might need to check out that Chanel stuff, too!) and I curl my eyelashes. I tend not to wear mascara every day, but since I don’t wear eyeshadow, maybe I need to bump that up. My current excuse is that I have seasonal allergies and my eyes typically are a little irritated. I’d rather switch the focus elsewhere…

Like my mouth! I’m a HUGE fan of lipstick and all lip products. As my Mom says regularly, everyone looks better with a little lipstick – and I totally agree.

My face has never taken more than five minutes. Seriously. I work full time and don’t have kids, and I don’t see my makeup schedule changing any ever since it doesn’t take long. Sunscreen (I’m loving Laura Mercier’s new Daily Face Shield SPF40), Estee Lauder Idealist to even me out, a quick swipe of Bare Minerals tinted Mineral Veil, a dab of concealer if I have any trouble spots (Bare Minerals SPF20 Concealer right now), Great Lash Mascara with Smashbox Primer, BareMinerals Brightening Pearl Eyelid Primer, maybe a touch of Estee Lauder Eyeliner in a khaki color, and Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm in Rose Dahlia.

If I’m going out, I’ll play with eyeshadow – adds a couple of more minutes. I’m on a bit (OK, a LOT) of a Bare Escentuals kick, but even when using other stuff, my general method doesn’t change.

I love this. I’m jotting down all of the suggestions for foundation because I can’t seem to find my “one true love” for foundation.

My newest obsession is my clarisonic face brush. My mom got one for me (and one for my sis and my sis-in-law) for our “everthing” present this year. (She gets us one truly fabulous gift to cover all holidays.)

I like Clinique SuperDefense SPF 25 Age Denfense Moisturizer. Pricey, but nice. And SPF 25. I’m also a huge fan of Vanicream. Yes. Vanicream. My nephew uses it for his exzema (sp?) and we now use it head-to-toe.

I’m not a mom yet but I would keep my face routine (it’s quick and makes me feel good). I do wear makeup everyday. I don’t wear eye makeup everyday. I usually do moisturizer, foundation, powder, blush, and lip gloss. I wear eye makeup for special occasions and if I have “real plans” like a party, dinner date, etc. I really enjoy eye makeup but it takes me a little more time and my eyelashes are so fine I think I would pull them all out washing everyday eye makeup off. haha

I am very particular about moisturizer, and I have used every pricey brand you can think of. The one I have started using lately is Expert Sensitive Light Moisturizing Lotion from Boots, that can be found at Target. It’s extremely inexpensive (only $6 for a pretty generous bottle) and sadly does not have SPF, but it is so far the only thing I have used and loved aside from the miracle Neutrogena green gel stuff that isn’t made anymore, and a C.O. Bigelow one that is too heavy to wear any time but winter.

As far as Clinique goes, I used to use them until they changed their formula. I used the gel version of the yellow moisturizer for a while after, and it was ok, but again, no SPF! :(

I don’t wear makeup during the weekdays, but I wear on the weekends and when I go out. I work full time outside the home. I usually dressed up wear suits and other business wear and it just seems makeup is that one step too much for me. If you are looking for a moisturizer Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer is great! I used to use Lancome, but when I got a facial the lady told me I should look for products that are oil free and noncomedogenic since I’m prone to blackheads. For summer I’m starting to use Aveeno Face Sunsceen. I also started using Naturopathica Vitamin K Brightening Eye Serum under my eyes.

I shower at night, and get up 30 min before my kids so I can just wake up, wash my face, brush my teeth, do a 5 min hair do, 5 min makeup, and get dressed and start breakfast. I get dressed and wear makeup everyday. I don’t go anywhere with out makeup on. Especially mascara and I have to say I can’t stand that Maybelline mascara! It’s horrible! I tried to save some $ and buy that kind once (instead of the Clinique stuff I use). It was the biggest waste. I didn’t believe that a mascara could really make lashes look longer, but then I used that kind and it made my eyelashes look like stubs (and they’re not) and it left black under my eyes that was not easy to remove. I just had to give my 2 cents: )

you’re not the only mommy and blogger who wears make up everday. I am currently pregnant with my second–she’s due any day–and I have been on bed rest for the last 2 months. when I first went on bed rest I actually considered on wearing make up–and for the first few days, I actually didn’t because I figured i’m not gonna see anyone, just my son and husband. But then i realized that I wear make up for me…not for others. And so every morning, I put on my make-up, it’s a little toned down then normal, but I still love it, because I do it for me and I feel pretty.

I’m a married, motherless 26 year old who rarely wears make-up. If I do, it’s mostly eye-liner. And it’s not like I have “perfect” skin or a model-esque face to show off. I just want people to see me, and don’t want to think less of myself if I don’t put on make-up (though sometimes I do when in the company of flawless looking women wearing perfect make-up). But I also shaved off my hair because I got tired of caring for it and never got into a habit of “styling” it like girls are expected to do.

I hope any woman doesn’t feel required to do this in order to feel accepted or beautiful but rather does it for fun, like Halloween.

Sadly, I cannot leave the house without makeup…ever. I would love to be able to do that. I have skin issues and don’t feel confident without makeup. I don’t know how long it takes me to apply (I’ll have to time myself), but I know that it’s way more than five minutes. I would love to know how on earth women can apply their makeup in five minutes total. It probably takes me that long just to apply the foundation and concealer. I often wonder how I will survive when I have children because I just can’t go without makeup…
