Honor Roll

Honor Roll

I’m spending a weekend away in Palm Springs, so I don’t have as many links to share with you as usual. I do have a few things to take you through the weekend though. See you next week!

Sometimes I come across something so cute/sweet/charming/funny/pretty/inspiring/lovely that I just want to share it with you. These are the things that have made my honor roll.

I also write for Babble’s Family Style blog. Here’s what I’ve been sharing there…

Nicole, I’d be interested to know your thoughts on the DIY situation.

I responded to the LEIF post (under Rachael) that I really didn’t see the problem, especially if credit was given. Aren’t there thousands of blogs and post with people giving tutorials on how to DIY something so you don’t have to spend the money to buy it? The author seems to be personally offended when something of hers was labeled as DIY. I’m curious to see if this is just an issue with her or many others.

    Enjoy Palm Springs!

i’m not so sure about that DIY post either. it is obviously wrong to re-create an original design and sell it for your own profit- but for it to be wrong to be inspired and make something similar for yourself? i think that is a slippery slope…where would you draw the line? what about making your own version of Martha Stewart party decorations? recreating a famous chef’s recipe? copying the look of a certain fashion stylist? those are all artists who make a living off their work too. i think it would be an impossible task to trace the origins of every original idea out there, it probably goes back a lot further than we think.

that DIY post…valuing quality manufacturing, now that you certainly can make a case for – loose glitter is no fun in the colon (i’m guessing!)

i suppose having people copy your ideas and encourage others to do the same can be annoying, like in 8th grade when you came to school in a cute outfit and then some other girl copied you the very next day. but if you value creativity in yourself, you should value it in others. and the very act of making something for yourself, even if it’s based on someone else’s idea, is essentially creative. and often it leads you to truly value the original idea and support the person who came up with it to begin with. except for that girl in 8th grade, she claimed she thought of it first, which is just a total lie, and also totally rude.

When you were a red head or copper top did you use at-home color or was that professional? I’m having a hard time with the at-home colors right now.

The whatnots are such a fun idea. Try this one: orange body, oval eyes with purple eyelids, round purple nose, pink boa hair, and mod dress with headscarf. I think you will love the mix!

I am kind of meh about that DIY post. If people continue to label your photos as “DIY”, and it bothers you, I mean I hate to sound harsh, but it might not be such an original or novel idea (like glitter-covered objects). Someone could argue that they’ve been selling glitter-covered shoes in Target for years. If every idea was traced back to the original inspiration, things would start to get ridiculous. We’re all absorbing ideas, and as long as its not a total rip-off for profit, really who cares?

That DIY post annoyed me greatly. I understand it must be frustrating to see a million shabby versions of your ideas littering the blogosphere, but I would argue that very little of an artist’s livelihood is diminished by such activities. I know if I am dipping spoons in glitter, it’s probably just because the originals are prohibitively expensive for my personal budget. I think as a creative community, we still value quality and craftsmanship, but most people’s financial realities don’t accommodate buying each piece of art that one is inspired by. So we, living in times of austerity, resort to our humble, flawed, craft-paste-covered hands. And as long as you are satisfied with the result, give ample credit where it’s due, and don’t mass-produce the thing for sale in an Etsy shop, I genuinely don’t see the harm.

Also, many of these popular blogs that feature Pinterest DIY activities give away for free something invaluable within the vast, lonely expanse of the internet: exposure. Just because it’s not in one person’s budget to buy the original, doesn’t mean they don’t have readers who may be willing & able to swing it.

I was annoyed by the DIY post too, for many of the reasons Nicky and Kelly raised above. I said so as well, in my comments on the original poster’s blogpost… which I see has now been deleted, and all of the comments critical of the poster’s view have also been deleted.
