Bird’s Nest Fern

I’d always wanted one of these ceramic planters, so when they popped up for sale on Fab.com awhile back, I bought a small black one. Of course, that meant I then had to find a plant to go inside.

I bought a bird’s nest fern from Sprout Home, but I’m worried about my ability to keep a large houseplant alive. I’m worried that my cats will eat it (it’s safe, but they’ll destroy the leaves). I’m worried that Eleanor will spin around and knock into it. I’m worried that August will pull the whole thing over. But it’s so good, I’m willing to give it a shot. Basically, I’m so excited, I’m so excited, I’m so scared.

Hahaha love that episode of Saved by the Bell! Also, love that plant. What is it? I’m always looking out for cat safe plants because mine will eat anything.

That fern is lovely! I totally get your excitement and fear. When my mom passed away a few months ago, we received a zillion plants and my aunt insisted I pick one to keep. I kept trying to tell her that I was sure I would kill it by neglect, but she made me take one and said it would be good for me. I chose one of the peace lilies, and so far it’s still alive, although if I wait a day too long to water it, it slumps in this terrifying wilt and then I freak a little and douse it with water like it’s on fire or something. It perks right back up as if nothing ever happened! It’s kind of amazing, and my aunt was right, it’s a comforting sense of accomplishment that I’ve kept the thing alive this long. I’m also surprised at how much it has transformed the vibe of my living room. I’m even contemplating getting other plants for our bedroom and office. :)

It’s wonderful that you were able to take one of her plants — It’s a good thing your aunt made you.

Love the plant, love the planter! My plants have been just fine with the cats and both kids – we had a bit of curious digging by our little guy at one point, but because it’s always there he lost interest very fast.

Oh I love it! I want more house plants, but my two cats are like magnets to any plant. It’s ridiculous! One of them in particular has even gotten on top of the fridge to get to a plant I tried to put in a spot that would be ‘off limits’!! But if this one isn’t poisonous, maybe I’ll give it a shot! Love the planter too!

I’m going through a similar, should I, shouldn’t I dilemma, with getting plants in my home. For similar reasons. But, I think I’ll give it a try too. You’ll have to keep us updated on how it fares.

p.s.- LOVED the Saved by the Bell reference. So funny.

My cat loves to chew on the plants so I try to make sure they aren’t harmful. I do have a large fern that she regularly chews on and then throws it up later (it’s not a harmful plant though), so I just yell at the cat when she is about the chew on it. LOL I do hate ferns, but this one is so different! So much better than the regular fern that seems to grow like weeds about my house.

    Ok…
    1. I have a bird’s nest fern and have had it for years with no accidents. And I’m not exactly a green thumb. So you should be fine!

    2. I am falling out of my chair laughing at the Jessie Spano sampler. That bit of pop culture is one that we use quite frequently here at the office (I have a fun workplace). That just made my day!

I love it. I wonder if I can get one at my local Home Depot or Lowes? I have such issues with light in our house, that I usually buy plants there unless I know they will do well/have prior experience with them. I love that 1 year guarantee.

That said, I’m going to have to branch out (heh) and go to some nurseries because there are some plants and terrariums that I want that I know will never show up at a big box garden center.

Oh, just wait until you see the terrarium — that was the real reason for my trip to Sprout Home. I made it and photographed it today. It’s in the library. (Pinterest just shuddered in anticipation.)

I have one of these and its survived both children and cat for several years. It may not, however, survive the transplant to a bigger pot from last weekend. It broke off at the base. I’ve stuck it in dirt and hoped for the best because it is so lovely. Yours looks fabulous in that planter.

I have to actually plant mine soon. I just plopped it right in the planter in its little plastic pot. I’ll have to be sure to be careful.

    Beautiful fern!

My dad has a great “spider fern” (don’t know if that’s the actual name, just what we call it) in the backyard. And every spring, the same dove comes back and nests/lays eggs in it. So I guess it is literally a “bird’s nest fern”.

I know, long way to go for a dorky pun. ;-)

Looks great! Hope this is the start of many house plants. There is nothing like real plants to warm up a house. Maybe next you’ll get a ficus tree at Home Depot. I think you can put stones or something to keep the cats out of the dirt.

Our cat Motley is such a butthead with plants! We use a mixture of water and cayenne pepper misted onto leaves to deter our kitties. Safe and non-toxic, just spicy! Also, if digging become an issue, sprinkle black pepper (generously) on top of dirt. One sniff of that will certainly discourage the naughty kitties. Hope this helps and good luck with your fern!

my black thumb and i can attest to the resilient nature of all types of ferns. i’ve had a macho fern sitting on our patio for years, and a boston fern before that. both big and lush…exactly what a plant should be! :D

I kill about 90% of the plants I bring home, but I have a bird’s nest fern on my porch that is doing great despite my shameful neglect. Good luck!

Good luck, Nicole! I’ve pretty much given up on house plants at this point, as I just can’t keep them alive. Maybe, if you’re successful with your fern, it will inspire me to try again. Looks great so far.

Wow, that fern looks so lively! And I love the way it plays with the light streaming in through that window. It makes it just feel so… playful! I love it when people incorporate more “natural” elements in their home interiors, I wish everyone had a plant or two inside their home. One question I have, since I don’t know a whole lot about ferns specifically: will this fern continue to root, and if so, will you have to eventually buy a larger ceramic vase for it? It just looks like it completely fills the vase now, so I wonder if you expect it to grow more and maybe eventually become “too big for its britches” so to speak?
