Double Parlor The Victorian House

Stripes Wanted

The new house needs a little striped settee. NEEDS.

Striped Settee

These matching striped sofas are pretty fantastic too (though larger than what I’m looking for).

Striped Sofas

I think the key is going to be finding a vintage piece with interesting lines, that would be a good candidate for reupholstering. It’s just not the same with, say, a new chair. The seating needs to have some curves and some quirk.

We’re out of this house next week, and then we’ll be heading up to Northern Wisconsin. I want to hit up the antique shops in the area because I have it in my head that I will be able to find veritable treasures there for like $2. I’m sure it won’t shake out that way, but a girl can hope for some thrifting luck.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. You may need some stripes, but we need a picture of you driving through Wisconsin with a settee strapped to the roof of the car.

Ooh, I love it. I agree that striped furniture needs to have a more unique, curvy shape. A boxy shaped sofa with stripes can end up looking like a Dr. Seuss sketch ;-)

Good luck on the hunt! Stripes never seem to go out of style.

Elkhorn flea market in WI is Aug 11th. They always have some wonderful finds. Good luck!

Thanks! We’re going to be pretty far north though, probably a good four hours past Elkhorn. Is it really good?

Elkhorn’s my fave in the area. It’s Sunday only, so great deals to be had after noon.

I have been debating stripes on the settee that I will eventually tackle. First I have to figure out where it’s going to go and what’s happening in that room. I feel like all of that is so far in the future my poor settee will just have to chill for a long while.

YES! I don’t know if you ever go into The Careful Peach in Oak Park, but Karen often reupholsters really sweet looking vintage chairs and setees. Ask her about her pre-redone inventory. Or, I bet a weekend or two of estate sales would find you an awesome piece for very little money. Think Berwyn, Cicero, south suburbs or northwest Chicago neighborhoods where you have concentrations of eastern European grandmas. I’ve found a few gems of this style throughout the years that I have flipped or sold to dealers.

That couch from Little Green Notebook is one of my absolute favourites. The stripes are so divine.

Happy thrifting!! I never give up on the hope/dream that I’ll stumble into some old lady’s yard sale and she’ll be selling vintage Herman Miller pieces for like $2 ;-)

Does the fact I recognized the first pic before I even saw the settee mean I’m spending too much time reading blogs? I love Little Green Notebook, though I find her energy level intimidating! LOL

I live in rural (but not northern) WI and yeah–keep your eyes open. I’ve seen some amazing pieces at Goodwill and St. Paul de Vincent. Good luck!

    Happy thrifting!

I’ve recently come upon a love for striped seating since inheriting my grandma’s striped wing chair. It looked out of place in her stuffy living room, but in my retro modern family room it has gotten a new life.

    Have fun on vacation!

I love reading about your move and seeing the pure excitement that you have about tricking it out! I cannot wait to see what you do with your new place. I’m reassured that there are others out there who get absolutely obsessed with everything home.
