My Life The First House

Moving Day

Eleanor and August

Well, that was an unexpected week off from the blog. That’s what happens when you scramble to get all of your belongings into storage, get the house swept and cleaned, and the keep the kids happy. Not having an internet connection may have also contributed.

Skeleton Keys

The closing was scheduled for 3:00 yesterday. Brandon and I had almost finished moving everything out by the morning, but we still had a few things left on the storage shelves in the basement, plus the shelves themselves. We filled our car by 2:00, but had no room left for the shelves and uprights. The new owners were about to do their final walk-through, so we quickly left a note on a box saying that we would be back to pick it up while they were at the closing, and sorry.

We got back to pick it up, and they wrote back:

We love this place!! :)

We’re glad! We loved it too.

Congrats on getting everything moved. And so sorry you have to do it all again when your new house is available. I can’t wait to see it!

It did happen really fast. I don’t think we’ve even processed it completely yet. We emptied out the house, and then skipped town!

Passing along your home to new owners who will love it like you did is really special. We tried to convey how much/well we plan to take care of our new house to the previous owners (didn’t want them to think we saw it as just a bunch of walls with a roof) with a note too. Love the photo of the keys!

Bittersweet! We loved that place, too – us, your readers. And we’re excited to see all the kinds of amazing you’ll bring to your new lovely place. Good luck, and may you all enjoy the time and adventure in-between dreamy homes.

How nice that the new owners love the house as much as you did. Are you feeling sentimental at all? You seem ready for the next house… which I get entirely. I was surprised how unemotional I was when we sold our first house. I guess it’s because I knew we were going to our dream home. Hope you’re feeling the same and aren’t too impatient to get to the new house. Enjoy your break.

It seems to come in waves. Sometimes I feel sad, especially when I think about all of the ‘firsts’ to happen in that house. We’re all looking forward to the new house though too, and there will be lots of new memories to be made there.

awww, that’s really great…love that they sent you that last little message. And of course they love it! It’s been a very loved house!

Yay, and on to new adventures in the new house!!

You know, we just got back from our summer away in Europe and it almost feels like we’re in a new house again…it feels so good to be home and I have new energy to take on all these projects I had waiting before we left.

Good luck on all the moving (in) now! :)

Would it be to much to ask them to start blogging about the house? Sure they won’t mind really ;). It’s weird that we won’t be seeing the 5th member of your family on the blog but can’t wait to see the new place!

Wouldn’t that be funny? The people that bought the house are a young couple, with two little girls. I wonder how much they’ll change, and what will stay the same. They asked for the library to be left behind (besides the books, of course!).

Hi Nicole – I hope the move is going ok for you – I can imagine it’s pretty stressful with two little ones! I just wanted to say that MIL was the first interiors blog that I stumbled across – I think I began reading when you were pregnant with Eleanor. Since then, we’ve both had two children, and I’ve read your entire archive. I love your blog, and I’m so excited about reading about your move and your new post in real time!

Thanks! Yes, it’s a little harder with the kids, but plenty of other people have done the same and come out on the other side, so we’ll get there too, I’m sure. :)

Last year, we had a very similar gap between the closing of our old home and the purchase of our new home. Just about a month. We loaded everything into storage and headed with three young kids to a short-term, furnished rental apartment in the city. My husband and I still frequently comment on how that break between houses was such a special, intimate time for our family. Low responsibility with loads of time together after such a huge event. I wish the same for you and your family. I simply cannot wait to see you renovate your new pie-in-the-sky property!

We’re taking a forced vacation! Aside from the added cost of storage and moving everything twice, it’s actually pretty nice. There are a lot of us spending the summer up at Brandon’s family’s lake house, so the cousins are all having a great time together. It’s sweet.

Dear Nicole, I started following your blog before you had the first baby. I come back to it like an old friend. You made your house so lovely of course it sold in record time. Good luck in your new home, be sure to keep all your blog friends up to date on how you decorate that house. Best wishes
