Double Parlor The Victorian House

So Long, Green Chairs

The green warehouse sale chairs are gone. I didn’t lose any money — just face — and I’ll continue looking for the right fit. They were beautiful, but I had a chance to break even with them and I took it.

It wasn’t the color alone that had me questioning them. I’m aiming for dark walls, with blue and pink, but green could have fit in beautifully, as in this dining room, by Grant K. Gibson.

My chairs were not such a vibrant emerald though. And more than just the color, the shape was off. I’m going for a less curvy, more boxy shape. Or if not necessarily boxy, then more masculine (like a pair of vintage leather safari chairs).

I’ll be patient. I have some chairs around that will be fine placeholders. They don’t look right in the space, but that’s OK for a while.

p.s. We sold our Jasper sofa last night too. (Single tear.) Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes.

do you think you could show some pictures with a wider view of the room? it’s so pretty but hard to get a feel for the whole space with the close-up shots.

Aww, bye chairs! It’s probably a good thing to just clean the slate and start over rather than try to fit them in somewhere.

Those green chairs are nice (it’s my favorite color) and looked comfy! But I can see where you’re coming from with your inspiration/ideas for something more boxy. The green chairs were definitely not boxy.

I didn’t want to say anything, but you’re better than those chairs. :P They seemed like something that would become irritatingly dated too quickly—the big old swirl combined with the nailheading—and I personally don’t like an upholstered armchair with a bunch of negative space (feels like a psychological misfit in something that’s meant to be all cozy and plush) and that olive color was going to boss the rest of your designing around and you’re right that it wasn’t vibrant enough to be an on-trend pop of color type chair. Generally I think you were right to break even on them. You’ll find something that fits your vision and is a little more versatile soon!

I really appreciate hearing tales of buyer’s remorse from you, though—I regret the crazy bossy Amy Butler rug I bought when we first got our house, and it was so expensive that I’m stubborn about getting rid of it. It’s comforting to know actual design bloggers make the occasional off purchase too. :)

I think it was the right move. It’s probably just me, but the angle of the backs is just too slouchy. I want to say to those chairs, “Sit up straight!”

Good call. They’re great chairs, but I’m totally in love with your original idea for the space. Can’t wait to see how it develops.

Not the Jasper! Say it ain’t so!!!! I think you’re more open-minded than myself, towards the idea of eliminating furniture pieces and replacing them with new ones. I’m a bit more of a hoarder, particularly when it comes to items that I really like/love.

Also, I wanted to mention how much I admire the details of your mantel! The scroll-like wood molding is really pretty; and the brick around the fireplace looks like it’s in great condition!

You did the right thing. If you don’t LOVE them, you probably never will. Breaking even is definitely good. Well done.

I have two dark brown crocodile directors chairs with a matching side table if you are interested. Send me an email if you are interested.

I know you were having buyer’s remorse – even though they were great chairs. If it’s not the look you wanted you would have ended up hating them. Glad you found another home for them!

I did like the chairs at first glance but agree that they didn’t fit in quite so well in the space you are wishing to fill. I agree with the color, too- it’s a bit sad. I think even in a different space it needs brighter upholstery pins. Love watching your rooms come together- it’s a nice reminder that it’s a constant process :) Someone once said that when the house is officially “done,” it’s time to move!

Let me know if you decide the coffee table has to go too :) I’ve been trying to find one just like it.

Good for you and way to break even!

We all have our “whoops” purchase moments, so thankfully we can commiserate, no? While it may seem like you lost face, perhaps you helped someone else to feel at peace, too because of a “whoops” purchase moment.

It’s all about perspective- including the chairs!

totally agree–this is not a ‘losing face” moment. although everyone loves a good before/after shot, it’s really helpful to see the process (which is generally a wandering, circuitous path).

I didn’t comment on the chairs the first time you posted about them, but I was thinking they didn’t seem very you. Of course, I only know you from you’re blog, but you seem more hipster and those seemed more fussy. The color, too, seemed a bit muted. I’m not a fan of yellow greens myself, but I love blue greens. Glad you had the opportunity to move them out with no real loss. Tis better to wait for the right thing than grow to despise the stand-in. I know this from experience!

I’m so glad you were able to break even on the chairs. I really wasn’t feeling them in the space either. Here’ to the next pair which will be a perfect fit!
