Artsy My Life

A New Year

Watercolor Experiments

It’s a new year, and I’ve been busy painting. Painting the bedroom. Painting with watercolors and gouache. Painting goals and plans with big, loose brush strokes. We’re in this big new house, and my dreams have been scaled to match.

I want that book deal I’m chasing. I want to make our home beautiful and personal. I want our family to grow, and along with it, the amount of love in this house. I want to grow as an artist, even if it just means drawing and painting with the kids.

I’m not one for resolutions, but I am excited for the new year, and I’m looking forward to sharing it all with you. Let’s do this, 2014!

    Hi,
I found your blog from….. Well…. from GOMI. (hangs head in shame). I was guided there from a remark written by someone on YHL. It makes me sad that the people on THAT site have nothing better to do than hate on people who make a living blogging! (I have to wonder if they have jobs, because as far as I can see they spend the day searching the internet for blogs to make fun of.) Anyway, I am thrilled that they led me to your blog. You see I live in a 1900 Victorian. Complete with original kitchen and Butlers Pantry. Very similar to yours. I love YHL! But I have been searching for someone who has original wood trim and isn’t painting it! (Mine is Walnut even upstairs!). I so wonder about good paint choices and making my home vintage but a little modern as well My husband and I have traveled a lot and have things from around the world that I want to use in decorating. And as well I love repurposing old things. (such as old shoe lasts and brown Clorox bottles). I think I have found my inspiration. I look forward to checking in often and getting ideas and inspiration. So anyway gotta go
I work as a nurse on night shift and I gotta get sleep. Thanks again!

I think you are on to a fabulous idea, by individualizing the painting in your beautiful home. You are a talented artist and I think you will come up with really wonderful designs. Good luck to you in the new year!

Hi Nicole, Your new house is beautiful! I just wanted to share a book with you that I thought you would like, especially since you seem to like painting flowers. It is called A-Z of Botanical Flowers in Watercolour by Michael Lakin, first published in the UK in 2012. Not only are his paintings gorgeous, but he shows you step by step how he paints his flowers. He takes you through the process in stages. first drawing the flower, selecting the proper colors for leaves and flower petals, how he layers the different pigments on top of one another to give the perception of depth, and basically how to make your painting look like a botanically accurate one. It is really the most detailed and helpful book I have found on this topic, I think you would like it too. Happy painting!
