Honor Roll

Lorde, Interviewed by Tavi Gevinson

  • Lorde, interviewed by Tavi. This next generation of women is going to be awesome.

  • I remember being asked by my parents to shield my eyes during the racier (not really) parts of Dirty Dancing. How uncomfortable would it be to see Nymphomaniac with your folks? Filmmaker Craig Johnson accidentally went to the screening with his, at Sundance. Here’s his mom’s review.
“I might have looked away a little bit during the montage of penises, because frankly that wasn’t very attractive.”

  • You should probably think twice before spray painting frequently used hardware. It’s probably not going to hold up.

The Apostle Islands' Icy Caves

  • Walking a mile on ice is terrifying to me (you’ll fall in and drown!), but I’m fascinated by the Apostle Islands’ icy caves that are otherwise only accessible by kayak (you’ll tip over and drown!).
We honeymooned up at the Apostle Islands. It was May, before tourist season, and it was creepy and desolate. Also, I thought that our nighttime ferry trip, during a bad storm and lit only by flashes of lightning, would capsize and we’d drown, but… pretty islands! Cool caves! (…I’m afraid of large, open bodies of water. Could you guess?)

  • Grace’s State of the Blog Union Address was a fantastic summary of something a lot of us have been noticing lately. Kottke also wrote about the shift recently.

  • “What’s the worst song of all time? It’s ‘We Built This City,’ right?””

I actually adore “We Built This City”, probably because I was seven years old when it was released, and I distinctly remember circa 1985-1987 being the “OMG EVERYTHING ON THE RADIO IS FANTASTIC AND MY FAVORITE SONG” years (my brother *still* mocks me about this), when I really started to figure out music. Plus, it’s ridiculously fun to belt out. So is REO Speedwagon’s “I Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore”. I discovered alternative in 7th/8th grade and never really went back to pop, but I’m not at all ashamed to love on the craziness that 80s radio offered up.

I totally agree! I’m not at all ashamed to admit that my sisters and I used to perform our own version of this video, complete with tools to act out building the city. :P

Out of all the blog posts that I read on a regular basis, your Honor Roll is honestly one of my very favorites. Just sayin’.

Worst song of all time has got to be “Pop Muzik” by M. No question. Runner up: “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles.

Lorde and Tavi – that interview is SO good. Rookie would have changed my world when I was a teen. Rock on.

We Built this City doesn’t even come close.

The worst song of all time is either “I’ve Never Been to Me” by Charlene or “the Last Game of the Year (Blind Man in the Grandstand)” by David Geddes, the man who brought us the Billboard classic Run Joey Run. Hands down. I defy anyone to find worse.

And BTW, I adore Pop Muzik.

I walked to the ice caves over MLK weekend! It was fabulous. Of course, there were a TON of people there (rare warm-ish day in Northern Wisconsin in January), not deserted like in those photos. But otherwise, it looked the same! Pretty fantastic.

As someone who loves reading blogs, but has never actually become a subscriber/follower and is only a rare commenter, I really liked the State of the Blog Union address. I do follow many bloggers on pinterest and repin many of their pins that interest me, but I don’t comment and leave feedback often enough. So anyhow- thank you for what you post on your blog- I have gone back to read again and again some of the things you have posted over the years and I appreciate how much time you spend putting interesting and useful things together for your blog content!

We honeymooned in the Apostle Islands (technically, on the mainland in Bayfield, but we were out on the islands nearly every day). It was late August and we managed to do the caves and they were SO COOL! and we found wild blueberries which were just about the most delicious things ever. =)
