'W' for Wallpaper Dining Room The Victorian House

Fornasetti’s Chiavi Segrete Wallpaper

This may be the new choice for the dining room. If I’m not going with clouds coming in, or a grayscale forest etching, why not hedges full of keys?

Fornasetti II Chiavi Segrete Wallpaper, Cole & Son
Cole & Son

The wallpaper design is Fornasetti II Chiavi Segrete, from Cole & Son. It’s lush, mysterious, and just a bit sinister. Perfect for the Victorian, yes?

It solves a few of the problems that I had with the other options. It’s meant to be a repeating pattern, not a mural, so the application will be seamless. And it’s pricey, but less expensive than grisaille wallpapers I wanted. I have high hopes for this one! Samples are on the way.

I thought your previous wallpaper ideas were great, but I really think this one is it! Those keys just add a super cool design element.

The green and the lighter cream choices are beautiful. I bet the Victorian is just begging for it! I got my Rifle Paper Co. wallpaper samples in today. They are ridiculously amazing. I am debating on 3 and wondering if I should just wallpaper another area because it is that good.

My Rifle Paper Co. samples arrived today, too! They’re fantastic. I’m leaning toward using one in the upstairs bathroom.

I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but I absolutely love the clouds coming in…
Maybe save up and buy it when it feels right, just like you’ve done in the past?

I ordered a sample of that too, since I was already ordering these (they’re all by Cole & Son). The nuvole/nuvolette pattern would be about $6000 to do the whole dining room though, and I’m not sure I want to take that plunge (even with some time to save up for it). This design is still expensive, but the whole room would be around $1500.

I feel like if you see yourself in this house for a long time, the nuvolette would be worth it. Otherwise, if you see yourself selling the house or redecorating in X amount of time, then this design is better. The light cream one is my favorite.

There are some really beautiful William Morris wallpapers, and actually, they’d be a great fit for the house. I like this option though, because it’s a little different. Quirkier, but still beautiful.

I love their “traditional” papers! The look like damask or toile, but then you look closer and the design is made of pin-up girls, or bats, or fire hydrants…

Nicole, this is fantastic! I love the secret keys. :) You’ve got me thinking seriously about doing wallpaper in our home, although my spot is a bathroom.

I have a very Balch-specific question, too—I don’t normally tend to be drawn towards pale pinks, but the tile in our bathroom is all pink beige and I think that instead of fighting it I should pick a wallpaper that’s even pinker to help downplay the pinky beigeyness. Since you like pink, and you’ve been perusing wallpaper like mad as of late, have you come across any designs that you think would work that are in that color scheme?

    • Making it Lovely
      June 3, 2014 at 12:23 pm

It wouldn’t downplay it, but it would make the pink look intentional. That’s what I had to do with the blue tub and toilet in the first house — decorate around it as though I wanted them to be there! I seem to be on a big Hygge & West kick lately (alternating with Cole & Son picks), but they have some pink wallpapers you might like if you want to go in that direction.

You said it better than I could; embrace and make it intentional seeming. :) Thanks so much, I just knew you’d have something in mind that would give me a simpler starting place! These are exactly what I had in mind! Cheers. :)

    • Making it Lovely
      June 3, 2014 at 12:20 pm

The gray is similar to the grisaille styles I like so much, but the green might look fantastic in the dining room. We don’t get as much light in there as we do in the rest of the house, and jewel tones and bolder colors are usually a good choice for rooms like that.

At first glance I preferred the lighter shades, but that green grows on you and works so much better with your black walls. What a great contrast from black to secret garden green. Very interesting and full of personality.
