I nixed the teal idea for the entryway and went with a dusty blue/green/gray. Teal would have played beautifully with the wood, but I felt like it was going to be too much in the context of the rest of the house. Subtle is a bit better in this case.

The color is Sherwin-Williams’ Comfort Gray. It continues up the stairs and down the second floor hallway. It’s also in our bedroom, and when I chose the color, I wrote “before we moved into this house, I did tell Brandon to slap my hand away from the paint if I start trying to put gray on all the walls. But! This is more bluish!” I still stand by that because while gray is lovely, but I get tired of seeing it again and again. So then of course I used it, again. (Ha. But this is bluish!)

I’ve had that lamp for almost a decade (here it is in our old apartment, just before I started blogging), and I picked up the sideboard shortly after moving in to store our shoes. I’ve since added a boot tray below for wet shoes and boots that we can pull out as needed. The rug is vintage, as are the Thonet chairs, and the painting is by Jenny Vorwaller.

The lamp adds some much-needed light, and the bowl is a great drop spot for Brandon’s wallet and keys. We added a desk to the library, so our mail is being sorted there now instead of in the entryway, leaving most of the sideboard top to serve as a pretty display surface. So I prettied it up with a few new additions!

Fall Flowers and Candles

I love that gold polka dot vase. The house’s architecture is formal, so it’s nice to inject a little levity here and there. And please do forgive the flowers for not looking their best. They were much prettier four days prior to being photographed, but then, you know… I went into labor! By the time I was out of the hospital and able to set my camera up, the pink dahlia had just about had it, and I had to pitch most of the dusty miller entirely. (Blame baby.)

The black vase is vintage, and the Charley Harper owl was a gift. I added a few art books and a few candle lanterns. Those are pretty now for fall, but they’ll be great for holiday decorating too.

This was super fun to play around with when I was going nuts with nesting energy. It’s also really nice to come home to.

I like the gray actually (but then again, I’m a neutrals person) – I think it plays really well with the wood tones. And it’s a nice backdrop to the rug and the visual collection on the sideboard.

Nice! What’s the source for the white side board and overhead light?

The sideboard was from IKEA, and I drilled holes in the doors to add horn knobs from Anthropologie. The light came with the house and is vintage/antique.

There’s a reason Comfort Gray is so popular. It’s very universal, neutral, yet it changes with different lighting throughout the day… very pretty. I must say I’m surprised you didn’t go with pink though. You choose the best pinks, pinks that I don’t see every day, pinks that look timeless, pinks that would look gorgeous in your home.

I do love pink, of course! I wanted a color that could be carried up from the first floor through to the second floor hallway though, and this felt like a better choice. Plus it plays nicely with the pink that I added to the library!

This is a little off topic……
With YHL’s announcement this morning I am feeling a little rattled. Coming to your page to see a lovely house update was very refreshing and just what I needed. I just wanted to say, THANK YOU for sticking around. I love your blog, and your new baby is beautiful.

      I completely second this notion.

I’m deeply saddened by their choice, although I’m sure it’s right for them. Please stay with us! I’m in love with your house and love watching your evolving style. It’s fascinating.

Thank you. I was a bit shocked to see their decision to quit! We started around the same time and I’m sad to see them go. I’m still here and happy to continue though, and I feel like I’m bursting with ideas and inspiration right now (just waiting for the wherewithal and energy to be able to act on it all without a baby attached to me at all times)!

I agree with Clare and Jessica. The suddenness of YHL’s departure felt like a real betrayal. I am so glad that you, Nicole, are still going strong and have the ethics not to betray your readers. I love your decorating and life choices. Stay strong and keep on going.

Lovely! You really have such a great eye for design – I love all your vignettes.

And I, too, would like to thank you for sticking around, especially in light of your third baby (congrats again!) and the YHL announcement. Please know that so very many of us really appreciate and enjoy what you share.

Terra – the sideboard is the Ikea Stockholm sideboard with (I believe) Anthro knobs added.

I love the chairs! And the boot tray – I’ll be buying one soon so my shoes/boots don’t crowd the hall during the insane Chicago winter.

      October 10, 2014 at 11:57 am

      Yep, you’ve got it.

And that boot tray is going to be pretty essential soon! We’ve used it a couple of times on rainy days, but once the winter snow arrives, well, you know how it goes.

I’m going to miss the flowers! They’re just about done now. The eucalyptus and dusty miller picked up the paint color so nicely, and then the coral and pink… so pretty.

I love the color! I actually never get tired of gray, it’s such a neutral backdrop for sll your pretty furniture and accessoiries without being boring like white might get. I do think there is too much going on on top of that cabinet tough.

There is kind of a lot up there, I suppose! I like playing around with it though, changing it up. The vases will probably get replaced by a plant soon, now that the flowers are spent, and I might shuffle a few other things too.

Happy homecoming to you and bub #3 to your ‘Mork and Mindy’ house; envious you had surplus time to nest!
Although I admire your use of pink hues which until reading your blog I had only associated with mid-eighties to nineties, the blue-grey is an excellent choice to offset the richness of the ample timber features. It is also a calming background shade for what you will probably find becomes a hectic household for a while. Good luck and good health to you all.

Beautiful! I like the paint color and the mix of new and vintage on the sideboard. I also like how the gray-blue leaves in your flower arrangement echo the wall color. I wonder if painting those chairs a grey-blue (or teal?) would be a nice contrast to the wood and reference the paint color when the flowers are gone?

Anyway, you are amazing for posting a week after having a baby. Take time for yourself if you need it, your readers will stick around. (I am also shaken by YHL’s announcement and I don’t want to see other gifted bloggers burn themselves out)

I do like the idea of painted chairs there (or painting the sideboard, which I have thought about). They are antique Thonet chairs though, and while I’m not looking to sell them I am somewhat conscious of their value and would be hesitant to paint them. There are colorful new reproductions if I wanted to go that route.

And thanks. I will be slowing down a bit right now, but will not be completely gone. I enjoy the blog! Of course, I really enjoy snuggly newborn cuddles too, so I’m making plenty of time for that (and for the rest of the family too).

Elegant looking w/antique runner. Colors do well together Nicole. Did I miss the newest (secretary/desk) piece of furniture added in library? Recently, (decor ?? blog) I saw the most gorgeous pinkish-strawberry secretary. Was really something …. huge boost of color for the room. P.S. You are looking very good Nicole! ; ) Motherhood makes you sparkle!

Congratulations on your lovely new baby boy! He is adorable, as are all your children.

The entry is stunning. I do think, however, you should paint the sideboard, to soften it. It is such a big piece, the white seems to dominate the room. It give you a fun base on which to decorate!

They’re vintage Thonet chairs, yes. They show up pretty regularly on Craigslist/Chairish/eBay/1st Dibs and at flea markets, and Crate & Barrel does have their own new version of them right now.
