Our Bedroom The Victorian House

At a Snail’s Pace

Our bedroom has been a work in progress for a long time now. In the beginning of last year, I wrote about how I was hoping to make the bed more often (because I’m terrible about getting in the habit), and I talked a bit about the search for curtains and art. Progress has been slow since then, but even though I look around and see all of the projects I want to tackle, the room is actually looking pretty good.

I picked up this fringed wall art to go above the antique dresser. I’d hung those two small paintings with a third initially, but the overall effect was that they looked bitsy. They needed one larger piece to anchor the grouping, and this was an inexpensive way to get in on the woven wall hangings trend. The metallic strands that are woven in are particularly nice, and there’s a larger version available too.

The little bird is an encaustic painting by Amy Ruppel, and the other was a commission by Paul Ferney (from this photo!). I’d still like to add more art to the bedroom, especially over the bed, but obviously I’m not in a rush. I like the vintage “dying flowers” (as Brandon coined) painting hung asymmetrically over the bed.

I’m trying to pull off the ‘I made the bed but it’s disheveled on purpose’ look that all the cool kids are doing these days. Successful? Not sure, but I do like the mix of color, pattern, and texture in the bedding. I had the throw pillows on hand and they’re no longer available, but the quilt and patterned sheets are. They pair nicely with a linen duvet (similar) and chunky knit throw blanket.

Curtains would soften the windows and cut down on the abundant wood tones in the room. I get overwhelmed with possibilities sometimes; plain white, a small scale pattern, subtle stripes, or something darker would all look good. I ought to just pick a direction and go with it. Maybe by this time next year, eh? That seems to be my pace in here!

Hard to believe that hanging textile art is from Target – it looks handmade! I like the mixing of patterns in your bedding – nice texture without being overwhelming. I’m reviewing the progress (or lack of) we’ve made in all our rooms right now, and our master bedroom is one of the least finished. I end up prioritizing design of the kids’ rooms over ours. But maybe this year I’ll move it up on the list…

I agree, the textile art is a great find at Target! Love the bedding too! Your room feels really good, beautiful pictures.

Laura, I think that happens with a lot of people — putting their bedroom off for last. Nobody else sees it, so it becomes less of a priority. I’m guilty of it too!

    Hi Nicole,

Where did you get your headboard from? We’re looking for a low to medium height headboard because the only place in our room the bed works is under the window, and we don’t want to block a lot of light and the cats would revolt if they didn’t have easy access to the outside view.

It’s the Hoffman bed from Room & Board. We bought it in 2007 and it has held up really well.

I love the cozy feel of your bedroom, the colors are so warm and make me want to just jump in your bed. Thanks for sharing in your journey of not always perfection, it makes me feel better about my slow progress in our apartment :)

The textile wall hanging is mass produced junk. If you want something like that why not visit a local artisan weavers guild.

There are some beautiful one-of-a-kind textiles out there of course, but I happen to like this one too.

Agreed! It’s such a shame when brands like Target piggyback on the work of artisans and small businesses…especially with weaving, which is a time-intensive process and requires some skill. Think how Urban Outfitters used to outright steal designs from artisans, and now tries to work with them on capsule collections. The Nate Berkus stuff retails from $35-70 on Target.com…check Etsy and you’ll see that prices are not much higher for the real thing. Anyone without the responsibility of a corporate sponsorship to uphold can (and should!) take the time to buy from and support artists. Remember that there’s no such thing as “cheap” or “easy luxury”…stuff like this comes at a cost to real artists, and a profit to mega-brands like Target and Berkus.

I’ve heard the “I can’t afford artisinal” arguement, but to me, the whole charm of a piece like this is that it IS handmade. Personally I wouldn’t want a machine-made copy that a million other people are going to have just because it’s an affordable version of a trendy look. To each his own of course, but I am disappointed in Nate Berkus for mass producing an intrinsically handmade item to make a buck.

I actually like the textile wall hanging and for people on a budget it’s a good option. I would have never thought to look at Target for something like that and there’s no way I could afford one from a fiber artist.

They’re brass and they were from Pottery Barn, but it looks like they don’t carry them anymore.

I rarely go purchase something the second I see it, but as soon as I saw that wall hanging I had to run over and see what options Target had. I ended up buying the huge cream one instead because I needed something pretty oversized for the wall I’m looking to fill. This is a great deal for these beauties. Also LOVE that tassel blanket. And a snail’s pace is perfectly acceptable with a new baby. My second baby is 6-months-old now and I finally feel like I can do more than survive in terms of things at home. You’ve got this!

This might be my favourite room in your new house. I love the colour palette and the natural wood goes so well with it. Very pretty and calm. I wondered where that rug ever ended up!

Whaaat is that huge chunky throw blanket? I love it so much. Beautiful bedding! I am on the lookout for a duvet set that is long enough to cover a bed without a high footboard. The ones from IKEA are only made for beds with prominent headboards and footboards and don’t even cover pillows. Way too short! Also, I adore the sheets from Target, especially the organic cotton ones. They are SO soft.

I love Target’s Threshold sheets, especially. I first bought them for Eleanor’s bed (last year) and was impressed by the quality. So soft, yes! The throw blanket was from West Elm, but I’ve had it for a while and they no longer sell it.

Can you PLEASE tell me where you found that fabulous bird beneath the textile? It’s about the most charming thing ever. There’s a vintage shop that’s always teasing me with one in their photos, but it’s not for sale!

Love your table lamps, too. You do a great job nodding to the Victorian but still staying so modern.

can i ask why you decided not to center the painting above the bed? it looks kind of unbalanced to me, but maybe not in person?

the paintings hung next to the wall hanging also look like they are positioned strangely, but maybe it’s the angle.

Your room looks beautiful! We have picture rails throughout our apartment and in our lease agreed not to put holes in the walls. What do you hang your pictures with when using the rails? We have loads of hooks from House of Antique Hardware and have been using jute as cord, but I’m looking for a sleeker, not-clear, alternative.

Lovely! I love the monochromatic bedding with varied textures. So delicious.

And the wall color is so fabulous, neutral with that hint of pink. I tried to pull that off in my master bedroom, but everything looked *too* pink on the wall. So congratulations!

(I ended up going with a deep blue instead. Easier that messing with the pinks.)
