Double Parlor The Victorian House

The Moroccan Rug

Black Walls, Teal Sofa, Moroccan Rug | Making it Lovely

The blue rug that I styled here recently, while beautiful, has been returned. Going back to bare floors was kind of sad! I’d had the Azilal rug that I brought back from Morocco down before though, and I figured it was time to bring it back.

Pink Tulips and a Moroccan Rug

I’m considering buying the blue rug for the dining room if I want to hold off on wallpaper, but I haven’t decided yet. It’s out of stock in the size I would need, so I’ve got a little time to think about it. I am however keeping one of the pillows from before! It’s got all of my colors going on, and I love the texture.

The Moroccan rug is a decent size (6×11) for the back parlor, but I wanted to try out a layered look with a couple of pale pink flatwoven rugs. You’ve seen them before; I like them a lot, but I didn’t choose them and they’re a bit too small for my house. I lined them up to create a larger rug because I thought the colors and pattern would complement the Azilal, and layering it on top covered most of the seam. And our corner fireplace is always an issue with rugs in this room. These are thin enough that I can fold the corner under to fit, but anything thicker would have to be trimmed and bound to custom fit the space.

Oh, hey, different plant. I moved the other fiddle leaf fig upstairs to a window with the same exposure in hopes of letting it recover, but it’s not doing so well. This other little guy is happy though, and has sprouted new baby leaves toward the bottom! I need to properly plant him soon — the plastic pot it came in is just sitting inside there.

Anyway that’s how we came to have three rugs in the living room. None of them are perfect on their own, but together they’re better than the sum of their parts. I don’t know how long they’re going to stay like this though — the kids run around the house and as they run through the room, everything is kind of sliding around! (Rug pads aren’t doing enough to stop the problem.) It’s a good look, but maybe not the most practical for us.

I love that rug you got in Morocco—when I think of “Moroccan” or “global” rugs, I usually think of a much more saturated color palette that really doesn’t go with our design aesthetic. But that soft pink just goes to show that my connotation of those terms is just way too narrow! :) I like your layered solution a lot. I think it looks much cooler than when people layer over sisal/seagrass rugs—this looks more designed and has more visual intrigue.

I just learned from Kristin that you can use gaffer tape to keep rugs in place. I used it on an eighteen foot runner in our long hallway and it’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing! Maybe that would help with your slip-and-slide issues. :)

I think the rugs look great together! Would rug mats help, I wonder? I’m guessing you might need 2 – one for the pink mats and then another to keep the Moroccan rug in place. Might be worth a shot – and still cheaper than one really large rug!

Any tips on keeping a pale rug clean? We have a dog and altho we do wipe her paws before she comes inside, our grey living room rug has still taken a beating.

I have a rug pad beneath the whole thing, but not in between. That may help. And no tips on pale rugs — this room is in the center of the house, so it’s not getting a lot of dirt/mud because the front and back entries are further away. We’re not strict about taking shoes off at the door, but most of the time, we do.

Try rug tape. It works fairly well, just make sure everything is clean.

    It looks really good.

PS You can find it cheaper elsewhere. I got ours from sears.

Love the way you layered the rugs. I too am talking about Moroccan rugs today on my blog and also have a pink one I bought for a client last year. I hope Moroccan patterns and color stick around for a long time, especially with spring here, such happiness in home décor!

Hi Nicole, Thanks for sharing your beautiful spaces. I know I am posting this question under the wrong article but I would really like to know where you bought your work task lamp from. The one in this picture https://makingitlovely.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/MG_0307-Edit640-640×426.jpg
And not sure if anyone else pointed it out to you before, but I’m reading your blog using chrome browser and I can’t detect borders on textboxes for commenting, the actual comment text box is fine but Name, Email and URL textboxes have no borders.

I had no idea about the Chrome issue, thanks. I’m using the same browser, but maybe it’s a PC/Mac difference? I’ll look into it.

The lamp was from Target, years ago. I think it was designed by Thomas O’Brien.

Hi Nicole! I have enjoyed your blog for years! I have a random question that has nothing to do with this post (although seeing your rugs layered like that has given me a great idea for our basement family room). If I remember correctly, didn’t you purchase the Sundero outdoor dining table from Ikea? Wondering if you would recommend it and how it’s held up. We live in Colorado where we are lucky enough to be able to keep our patio furniture out year round (not uncommon to have some really warm winter days when the kids eat lunch outside), but our outdoor furniture takes such a beating. We are getting ready to take our entire set of outdoor furniture, purchased just two years ago, to the dump, because it’s all cracking and falling apart, even with regular oiling. If you have any insight, I’d really appreciate it! Thank you!

Yes, I have the table! It has held up much better than their cheaper Appalaro table that we’d bought before that. It isn’t perfect — some of the slats warped and waved almost immediately, but they haven’t gotten any worse.

What’s the color on these walls. I have so much oak in my house (like this room) and am struggling with paint. I love what’s going on here!

“The whole is more beautiful than the sum of all parts” – I love that saying, and it suits your room. There is so much character in all the pieces you have chosen and the rug really warms and unifies the space. A well chosen and well looked after rug can really become the pièce de résistance of the room, as such I always consider it one of the more important choices :)
