Our Bedroom The Victorian House

Hello, Quincy

Spoiler alert: I bought the Quincy bed from Ethan Allen.

And now, the thought process behind the purchase.

Our Hoffman bed from Room & Board was great. If we weren’t changing sizes from a queen to a king, we would have kept it, and I would recommend it to anyone in the market for something upholstered. That said, I figured that if we’re about to get something new, it would be fun to switch things up a bit and go for something else.

Not a brass bed. Too on the nose with the Victorian. Nothing too mid-century modern either. As much as I love the style, I don’t like it as much for this house. I love a good Jenny Lind and I’m still glad we bought one for Eleanor, but wouldn’t it be weird to have matching mother/daughter beds? (E has one for her doll, too.)

Turned wood though — we’re getting closer! I do like all those antiquey cannonball and four poster beds.

I featured the Quincy in a past edition of Making it Yours. The bed was definitely the star of that look, and I immediately thought of it as a possibility for the bedroom. Knowing you like something in general and knowing it’s the right piece for a specific spot are two different things, but yep. That bed would look amazing in this house. It’s expensive though, so I started looking around at other options. Maybe there was something out there that was even better? Or the same look for less?

Four Poster, Cannonball, and Other Decorative Beds

  1. Washed Wood Bed, Anthropologie
Maybe too simple? Compared to the other options, it is.

  2. Soraya Four Poster Bed by Bebe Furniture, Wayfair
Nice, but do I really want a four poster bed?

  3. New Haven Maple Tall Cannonball Bed, ShaKa Studios
Three wood finishes and several headboard shapes to choose from.

  4. Spindle Bed, Rosenberry Rooms
Really cute. Twenty colors and wood finishes to choose from.

  5. Avignon Headboard, Serena & Lily
I’ve featured this one on the blog before and I love it, but it only comes in a queen size.

  6. Cordevalle Santa Rosa Four Poster Bed by Universal Furniture, Wayfair
Another four poster. The Holcomb Bed from Horchow is identical, or nearly so.

  7. Cambridge Bed, Serena & Lily
I would like something like this more for one of the boys’ bedrooms.

  8. Claudette Headboard, Ballard Designs
Nice curves, but I think I would get tired of putting a bird on it.

  9. Stinson Wood Bed, Pottery Barn
The barley twist posts are paired with a simple curved headboard to keep them from going too fussy/traditional.

  10. Barrett Poster Bed, Ethan Allen
Those are some good-looking pencil posts.

Lots of options. There were more too, but those were the tops and I didn’t love any of them like I did the Quincy. Which brings us to the lookalike: the Soraya Regency Panel Bed by Bebe Furniture, from Wayfair.

Quincy Bed Knockoff or Lookalike

And actually, there are plenty of lookalikes out there, but that was the most similar one I came across. They’re all, Quincy included, modeled after antique cannonball beds (which you can still find, but almost always in smaller sizes). That particular one was less expensive, but only available in white (I wanted black), I didn’t like the added trim along the top of the headboard and footboard, the spindles aren’t as interesting, and it doesn’t have the small brass details. At that point, it seemed worth it to go for the bed style and color I wanted all along. Since the Quincy is currently on sale for 15% off, it was only a difference of a couple hundred dollars; kind of a drop in the bucket when you’re already looking at a pretty pricey purchase.

We went to check it out in person, and then placed the order. No word on when it’s arriving quite yet, but when it does get here, we’ll likely have to hoist the headboard up over the back porch to get it up to the second floor. Should be fun! Should be worth it though, too. It’s the kind of bed that can go country, traditional, whimsical, modern, or classic, depending on the bedding, furniture, and surroundings. The kind of bed we can be happy with for a long time.

We bought Ethan Allen furniture as a young couple. A big expense that proved very wise as we moved literally all over the world and that furniture did too…after 40 plus years…most is still in the family!

I really liked the Claudette headboard from Ballard Designs, and you don’t have to use the bird. Then my daughter pointed out that it looked like Yoda. Sleeping with the Star Wars theme I couldn’t do.

Perfect! I’m pretty sure Domino did a little style page featuring that bed years ago in one of the issues and I’ve loved it since then. Beautiful bed, black such a great choice for your bedroom. Exciting!

Beautiful choice, and when stacked up to the similar alternates, I can see why you chose the one you did. I’m currently headboard-and-footboard-less because I’m too picky and the beds I like are out of my price range. I don’t understand why/how beds are as expensive as they are!

We have this bed and have enjoyed it – but have NOT enjoyed the Ethan Allen process. It took FOREVER to arrive and much longer than they estimated when we purchased. It then arrived with a giant chip, and they said rather than replace it they would send someone out to fix it. They fixed it, but it was far from satisfactory. So then we had to complain again, they sent someone out – again – and then FINALLY they reordered… but we got to wait the inordinate amount of time …again. Ultimately we are very happy with the bed and it is super stylish. It has held up impeccably (but does require diligent dusting). Sweet dreams to you! Enjoy!!

LOVE this bed for your home – definitely fits. Nicole, are you aware of Everything But the House (https://www.ebth.com/)? I see similar beds (as you mentioned, mostly smaller though) on there ALL the time for basically pennies! Worth checking out if you’re looking for more vintage pieces.

    I. LOVE. it.

It’s such a great blend of antique and modern. The finish updates it nicely and the curves have just enough whimsey to be extra special. Fabulous!

    And a king-size bed…Oh the luxe!

Hi Nicole I am new here, I love that bed and I have been eyeballing it for quite sometime. I cut a picture out of a magazine several years ago that looks almost like the Quincy bed. Looking forward to the reveal. Have a GREAT week!

But will you? My guess is…no. Just going by your track record. Your blog is getting gross.

My four poster is an ethan allen from back in the 60s. It’s been moved a few times and taken a licking from where the elec blanket control hung on the headboard, but I still could have a canopy if i wanted to and who knows i might want to end my life under a glam canopy!

My bed is double, but with the hardware that can be used to make a double bed hold a queen mattress I’ve been happy with it. You might have saved a few dollars the same way, but i sense that the money is not nearly as important as the wonderful feeling you will have every time you tuck in for the night.

I wish you as many wonderful years with your new bed as I’ve had with mine. I might even think of buying the Quincy myself, were i a few years younger and ready for a change! Bonne nuit!

My husband and I almost bought this bed last year when we made the switch from a queen mattress to a king. I love the turned posters and the whimsical headboard details! Ethan Allen has stepped up their game. I remember it being so traditional when I was a kid and my parents were buying it, but they’ve created some cool pieces that you can buy in painted finishes. I really like their color options!

I had an antique cannonball bed all through childhood and young adulthood. You’re right about the smallness–mine was a weird 3/4 size. Your post is making me nostalgic!

Seriously-I click on your posts with a smile on my face and I love the pictures and your professional information as to price and brand and what you liked or disliked about the item and then I find I am reading some dumb insulting comment that is pointless in its nastiness and wipes the smile right off my face(perhaps their real intent) and instead of moving on to my next email in a good mood I am left wondering why These ? bother? Don’t subscribe to that which ceases to please you and don’t spoil it for those who do enjoy it. Please………. And if I were a blogger I would zap such comments as not adding to the discourse and therefore -GONE!

I 100% agree. The negative comments people leave are just rude and I too wonder why they waste their time. If you don’t like something, move along and don’t come back.

My husband and I bought the Quincy bed 8 years ago (King size), and love it. I always say that I could start over from scratch, furniture-wise, but will always keep this bed. We’ve moved 4 times, and it has held up perfectly.

Hi, I’m a late comer to your blog having found it after googling Quincy bed since I just ordered one and am really excited to get it having never had a new bed before. I am wondering if you can tell me what brand of mattress you found that you are using on your bed. It looks perfect as far as height.
