August's Room The Victorian House

The Bedding for August’s Room

I don’t know if other kids are as into decorating as mine are. (So this is how I’m making them weird! Got it.) They’re always seeing the house get shuffled around, they’ve been to their fair share of home stores and flea markets, and they have definite opinions on furniture, colors, and layouts. Quote of the morning: “Hi, mom. Whatcha doin’? Oh! Making the bed more beautiful!?” Yep. The next generation of decorators, right here in this house.

All of this is to say that August is excited about each little change and new addition to his room. I took his mattress off and removed the slats so I could prime the frame, and while I had it taken apart, I tightened everything up.

IKEA Wooden Bed

I’ve also been pulling together the bedding, and I think we’re at a good place with it now. I like to have multiple options for each bed so we always have a clean set sheets ready. (Even past the kids’ potty training days, we’re always just one stomach bug away from a middle-of-the-night change of bedding.)

The golden mustard stripes in the curtains pick up on the honey tones in the woodwork, and the creamy white brightens things up. I have polka dot sheets in the same colors, but also a set of black and white sheets with teeny tiny plus signs. A black and white duvet cover from IKEA looks good with both sets of sheets, and I picked up a cable knit blanket and matching throw pillow in deeper color than the curtains. The green quilt that was in the room will be a spare, tucked away in the closet.

August's Bed

Don't Bug Me, Pillow

We’re getting there! I wanted to find a chambray quilt, but that was before I came across the blanket that’s on the bed now. I’m getting ready to finish painting the bed and upholstering the headboard, and now I’m thinking I might go with chambray there instead. A trip to both the fabric store (upholstery weight options) and the military surplus store (wool blanket?) is in order.

I have been struggling with updating my 4-year old’s room for too long now. I did a halfway makeover about six months ago but it’s just so hard to find bedding options for boys that aren’t graphic-heavy. I really appreciate this post – and may end up buying a few of the items you used for August’s room – because it reads “boy” without having trucks or airplanes all over everything. It’s definitely a room he can grow in to and that’s what I needed inspiration for!

Thanks for this post, it’s been really helpful and I love the direction August’s room is going. It looks great.

Thanks! That’s definitely the goal — a room that will grow with him. There’s a whole lot of Star Wars coming in through the art and his toys, and then he’s got animals and vehicles and superheroes and lots of other typical little boy stuff, but I’m not into theme rooms. I prefer bedding to be character-free, for the most part.

Just wondering if there is a reason that we never get to see any photos of full rooms on your blog anymore. It is so difficult for your readers to get any idea of how you are pulling the entire room together. Only tight shots? I don’t get it. Am I missing something?

The room isn’t finished yet! Here’s the weird thing. Some people read, and some people just look at the photos and skim. So when I post full shots of not finished rooms, I get a lot of “ugh, that _____ looks bad with ______” and I’m left thinking “I know! It’s not done yet! I WROTE THAT IN THE POST!”

With this post, since I’m just talking about the bedding, I focused on the bedding. Is it helpful to see the room in full when it’s still in progress? (Serious question. I started going for tighter shots, thinking that would be better, but now it goes the other way. “Why so many vignettes?”)

Yes, I think full pictures of the progress of your home would be fantastic to see. I think we all understand a room “in progress”. You certainly shared this with us in the last home. I think readers would love to see a recent tour of your home. I can’t find anything on your page, but maybe I have missed it. It has been so hard to visual where you are going with things because so many tight vignettes.

I really like the mix of bedding. My daughter and I were cleaning and reorganizing her room yesterday and her bedding makes me sad. It’s not the pulled together look that I would like it to be.

Dang those plus sign sheets! I am still sad that I didn’t have the money to buy a set for my bed. I keep hoping they come back in stock!

Nice Nicole. Simple, and cozy for August. IKEA print duvet adds great pop! Being only 144 count, wondering if soft (not too many wrinkles) after laundering? I loved all the patterns! It’s amazing to me how IKEA’s prices are so affordable. Target also. Sheet sets were good in my eyes! Hope your little guy enjoys!

Nice! Are you happy with the quality of the WE sheets? I a set of the Target tiny pluses sheets and I love them. They’re soft and cozy, much more so than some designer sheets I bought for 3x the price.

Love how this room is coming together! Would love to see s tutorial on upholstering the headboard – we have the same bed frame in our son’s room and that is something I’ve thought of doing, but figured it might be over my skill level. :)

I love the mix of patterns, very playful! I am a huge fan of Target sheets, especially the organic line they just get softer as the washes increase.
I’m a mom of an August too!

May I ask what you did to the bedframe? In the pics it looks almost driftwood grey and I LOVE it-pickling? stain? paint mixed with stain? I have a console I’ve been thinking about getting that look for though it’s already painted.

My daughter used to push the furniture around the living room (probably got that from mom). We also have arguments over which pillow goes where. She is four.

Looks great! Here’s a tip re: middle of the night bed changing. I make my kids’ beds like this: waterproof sheet, fitted bed sheet, ANOTHER waterproof sheet, ANOTHER fitted bed sheet. This way if there are the inevitable middle of night accidents, you can rip off the top two layers and have a clean and dry one ready to go. It’s a life saver (or sleep saver at least!).
