I’m fascinated by the story of the dream house/money pit. I can’t help but wonder how their conversations with their inspector went so wrong. (Was it his fault? Were they really that naive?) When we put in our first offer, we knew that an old house must have some issues and we told our inspector that we wanted to know everything. We were present for the inspection. He recommended that we ask for additional inspections by a plumber, an electrician, and (!!!) a foundation expert. That last was the dealbreaker — when the foundation guy stuck his ballpoint pen into the wall of the basement, we knew the house needed more work than we could afford. We were very, very grateful to our house inspector (who later gave us the go-ahead on our actual first house).

O.M.G!! I am crying for that couple in the money pit story. Awful. Loved the curious city story on OP for sale signs. Heard it yesterday and thought, that is SO Oak Park. Love it.

That house story is terrifying. Crossing all fingers and toes.

I just returned from a trip to Japan and my mother sent me the David Sedaris article while I was there so of course I high tailed it to Kapital and promptly bought myself a wonderfully ugly and ridiculously overpriced scarf as a souvenir of my trip! haha
