As we are temporarily without a home, we will be spending the next few weeks up in northern Wisconsin. One of Brandon’s sisters promised a new route up to the family lake house that would cut the travel time from six hours down to five, so we tried it. We drove past Milwaukee instead of Madison, and we managed to leave late enough in the afternoon to hit rush hour as we did so. Awesome! The trip took six and a half hours.
This greeted us though, so it’s worth it.
The kids held up all right, though Eleanor’s a bit gun-shy now about driving now. It’s a 20-minute drive (at least) to get into town, and she complains that it takes soooo loooooooonnng.
Brandon’s whole family is up here. There are ten of us sleeping in the lake house, and five more family members in a cabin further down on the same lake. That’s eight adults and seven kids. Plus a total of four dogs between us all. My uncle and his two cousins are also, coincidentally, nearby. As are seven additional members of Brandon’s family (aunt, uncle, cousins). We don’t really come from large families, but everyone seems to be up here at once. The north woods are where it’s at!
It’s been awhile, but I feel like I should watch this.
Eleanor and August are sharing a bedroom here, and they’ve been enjoying it. They’re read their bedtime stories together, and after Brandon and I say goodnight and shut the door, they talk to each other for a little while. Last night, Eleanor told me what she and her brother talk about before bed.
“All the things we know about and do, and all the things we don’t know about. And we tell knock-knock jokes, and play games, and after we play our games we say good night and go to sleep.”
Kids are the best. This is going to be a really special summer.

Oh, I love that movie! It really sounds like an amazing place to get to spend your waiting time. Enjoy!
Holy smokes, your kids are cute! I hope you’re able to to take some much-needed relaxation time. You guys must be so exhausted after last week and all that driving.
Hahaha!! So cute! This reminder me of me and my brother. We are 2.5 years apart. He had bunk beds in his room when we were little and I would sleep on the top bunk and him on the bottom. We would talk about lots of things and tell each other stories.
“All the things we know about and do, and all the things we don’t know about.” Deep! I love it.
jbhat
Isn’t that the best line? I love it.
We put our (now 3 and 5 year old) boys in a room together out of necessity while renovating. The space to separate them is available now but their time before bed and right after waking in the morning has been so sweet they don’t want to move.
I’m wondering if that’s what might happen for us, too.
Perfect time for a family reunion! Glad you and yours are enjoying the summer, and can’t wait to see what projects you’ll have with your new house!
Coincidentally, while the movie is supposed to take place in Wisconsin, it was actually filmed at Bass Lake in California, a small town just outside of Yosemite National Park. I figured this out right now when your post piqued my interest and made me feel like we should perhaps take a vacation to this lake in Wisconsin, since I loved the movie so much. As it turns out though, I don’t even need to leave my own state to get the same scenery and experience as is offered in the movie :) Gotta love California ;) (but I’m sure Wisconsin is very lovely)
Ah, but you still don’t have Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty! Though you have the dinosaur place that was in PeeWee’s Big Adventure, so I think that’s a draw. ;)
Ah, if you could only bottle that kid sweetness!
Enjoy every moment away with your family and rest, rest, rest. Moving is exhausting.
Aw, what sweeties! My two boys share a room and I love to hear them chatter to each other before sleeping.
I find myself waiting outside their door to listen in for a few moments each night. (And as I typed that, I realized how creepy it sounds, ha!)
I’m from Duluth, MN and living just over the Lake Superior bay in Superior, WI. My family’s cabin is on the Delta Lakes chain near Iron River. I love this area! Like you said, nothing better than the North Woods. I hope you’re enjoying your time in limbo with the family.
What area in the north woods? My family has a cabin right outside of Minocqua. It’s so quiet and peaceful up there!
We’re near Minocqua!
So sweet! I thought we had a full house! Y’all are packed! It’s only temporary, so just pretend it’s an extended vacation! :)
