picture rail question

I like this one!

I’m trying to figure out whether to treat the area above the picture rail as an extension of the wall or treat it like the ceiling. Blogged at makingitlovely.blogspot.com.

I agree, solid color above the rail. It adds a nice separation.

i like the solid above the line. :) i cant remember, but isnt that technique used to make the room look taller? (im probably wrong)

It's used to make a room look shorter (bringing the ceiling down). ;)

I like the solid color above too -- the picture rail stops the eye, and it seems natural to have something different continue after the rail. Did that make any sense?

SEE, i was wrong :)

Yes definitely the solid above the line!

i'm pretty certain that the molding was put there to hang framed pictures. the framed picture would have had a chain or a ribbon that was long enough to tack up onto the 'picture rail' so that no holes were put into the wall. personally, i like the continued wallpaper look.

I like the second picture, it is not so heavy.

beachbount, you know now that you mention that I think you are right about that, there is a arts center neat me that has one of those picture rails running around the room and there are these special hooks you can buy to hang from it and adjust the height of the hook that holds the frame.

i'd love to see that paper in a green color way against that reddish wood.

Yes, the picture rail is there so that you hang hooks off of it for pictures instead of hammering into the plaster walls.

I would view it as crown molding and paint it a solid color to extend the height of the ceiling. Currently, the ceiling looks too low.

What do you mean? Paint the picture rail the same as the ceiling? Or paint it white (or some other color)?

i had similar walls in my s.f. house. i painted the above rail and ceiling all one color. the area beneath i painted a different color. i used those, martha, aracquan (sp?) colors. it definitely heightened the ceilings.

I have picture rails in my house and I have treated them both ways. A solid color above and below the rail is a nice look. It really helps to use picture clips to hang your pictures with, then it really seems to have a purpose.
