I hate tamping! I think it's worse that digging. The string is tied to stakes, which then get pounded down to ground level. That way you can go along the string at different points and measure down to check for a uniform depth (8 inches, in our case). We'll still need to use a level as we get closer to finishing, but the string is helpful for the preliminary prep work.
