    Cute Capes, Cute Shoes

Every fall and spring, I find myself wishing I had another cape. Another, because I already own two.

One is a long charcoal wool number on the fancier side, so it’s not all that wearable day to day. And the other is perhaps what I should think of as my starter cape? Like, the cheap cape you buy when you’re just dipping your toe into the slightly silly fashion waters to see if you know how to swim? That. And figuratively, I can swim (because literally, I cannot), but I’m over this one from Target ten years ago.

They’re pretty easy to get away with in casual settings (good morning, fellow parents at school drop-off!) as long as you keep the outfit underneath simple.

    Cute Capes, Cute Shoes.

The first is the Trench Cape from J. Crew, on sale and also available in navy. It was the basis for my gouache illustration, and it’s as subtle as a cape can be, really. Then we have the pretty Charlotte Cape, which is also on sale (clearance) and comes in two other colors. I wouldn’t pair red with red, but other than that, any of the shoes work with either cape: the Charlene oxford to tone things down, the Kitty flats if you’re feeling cheeky, or the Sloan plaid d’orsay flats for pretty shoes that aren’t too out there.

Do you have a cape? Do you wear it? Everyday superhero fashion is where it’s at.

    Style: Pink, Gold, and Bugs

As much as the idea of actual bugs crawling around my ears sounds absolutely terrifying, cute little gold ones can hang out all over me anytime. (Insects seem to be my adornment of choice these days.) Clogs, ’cause I’m on that bandwagon. Pink: always. Stripes, glasses, a dress… you know how I do.

    Style: Sundial Skirt

I love this Sundial Skirt. Love it. I’m sorely tempted to buy it now and save it away for wear a year from now, when I ought to have a waist again after baby number three, but who knows what size I’ll end up at. (Smaller, right? Ha. Hahahaha.) So instead, I’m creating an outfit around it.

    Sundial Skirt

I’d wear it as shown, necklace and striped belt included, but I wanted to put together a different take on it here.

    Red/Orange Midi Skirt #makingitlovely

    1. Strike it Lucky Top, ModCloth
My favorite blouse shape. Easy to wear, with a little detail at the neckline and sleeves.

    2. Ms. G Glasses, Rivet & Sway
Such a good color, and a flattering shape.

    3. Givenchy Dahlia Noire Eau de Parfum, Sephora
A new favorite. The notes as listed: pink pepper, mandarin, cedrat, rose, peach, cedarwood, sandalwood, vanilla, and amber.

    4. Say Yes “Yes” Necklace”, Kate Spade
A small but positive statement to keep with you through the day.

    5. Daniela Bustos Maya Single Coin Necklace, Madewell
A good layering necklace to go with the other.

    6. The Holepunch Transport Tote, Madewell
A basic tote, punched up (literally) with a little detail.

    7. Sundial Skirt, Anthropologie
      Pretty pretty.

    8. Fores Bracelet, Tiro Tiro
A delicate form that still carries some impact (and a bit of color).

    9. Nude Shot Vanilla Beige Nail Polish, Sephora
The perfect done but not overdone color.

    10. Golden Hour Sling-Back Shoes, BHLDN
Simple, with a nice manageable 2.5″ heel.

  • How to Wear a White Lace Dress for Fall

How to Wear a White Lace Dress for Fall

Brandon said that my new dress looked like a christening gown, so it had that going for it. Also, you’re not supposed to wear white after Labor Day. Two strikes. I soldiered on though (so brave, I am!), determined to make this dress work for fall.

    Nicole Balch, Making it Lovely

    I think it’s working.

October Style: A White Lace Dress

    1. Tenley Glasses
I like that the red of the glasses picked up on the red in the tights.

    2. Classic Link Bracelet
I wore a crazy baubled Kate Spade bracelet, but it’s no longer available. This one’s a good substitute.

    3. Serenade Lace Dress
It also comes in navy, and the stores have it on sale (I got mine for under $100).

    4. Vintage Leather Saddle Bag
The crossbody style that has been everywhere for a while is perfectly unfussy to go with all that lace.

    5. Sidewalk Skimmer Flats
I tried this with heels, and the whole effect was one of trying too hard. Flats it is.

    6. Opaque Tights
      Pick a color. Any color.

Do people still observe the “no white after Labor Day” rule? If so, whoops.

    Style: July ’10

If I knew how to swim, I’d buy that swimsuit immediately. I still kind of want it anyway. *sigh*

I do however know how to relax at a backyard barbecue (which I will be doing this fourth of July weekend), and this outfit would be perfect. A casual, comfortable dress, awesome strappy flat sandals, a charming necklace, and a punchy straw bag. Done.
