Twitter Chat with John Gidding, and a HUGE Giveaway!

You remember the lovely bedroom redesign that I did with the help of Membership Reward Points from American Express, yes? Well now I am working with them again to host a Twitter Chat with HGTV designer John Gidding. John will be giving tons of advice next Thursday on how to decorate and find creative ways to stretch your budget — just like I did using my points.

John and I will be on Twitter for one hour on Thursday, July 29 at 8:30p.m. EST/ 5:30 p.m. PST (search #AmexHome). John will be answering your home design questions about anything from creating amazing guest spaces to choosing the right colors for your home. He’ll also have plenty of inexpensive ways to get your home ready for sale and ideas for upgrading rooms on a tight budget.

Now, you may have noticed the whole HUGE giveaway thing we’ve got going on here…

How do you enter to win?

Comment on this post with your questions for John and we’ll discuss some of them during our Twitter Chat. By leaving a comment, you’ll be entered to win items like a KitchenAid mixer, a Bissell vacuum, or a set of Cuisinart cookware (all of which can be bought with Membership Rewards points). There will be ten winners in this giveaway! Here are the prizes:

My question: Soon I’ll be moving into an apartment that does NOT let me paint…not even a little measly accent wall. I’ve always been able to paint before and give the place a little splatter of my personality. What do you suggest to someone who is facing a beige wall only future? More than hang pictures, of course ;-)

What words of wisdom can you offer someone thinking about repainting the exterior of a house (specifically, a tiny little brick Victorian). How do we pick a color that’s bright and happy without being too much? Should we take into account the colors of our neighbors’ houses — for example, should we avoid green and purple because the house next door is green and purple?

I would love if you could discuss merging furniture. We just moved in together and got married, and his ikea/contemporary/sage microsuede sensibilities and my shabby chic/french provincial/vintage feel don’t seem to mix. So we have a dining room and living room that are entirely “his” and bedroom that is “my” look (with the odd ikea dresser and bookshelf for extra needed space).

With no spatial conception, design vision or professional budget – how can we blend what we have to maek our look rather than these awkward pods of style in our home?

    Thanks!

Our kitchen is circa 1980 complete with ugly faux wood laminate cabinets and faux marble linoleum counters and flooring. We’re not ready for a full kitchen remodel but we have thought about painting the cabinets. How well does paint hold up over time?(assuming one uses the right kind, starting off with Kilz for example) I also worry that if we paint the cabinets the counter top and flooring will look especially bad. Right now it’s all bad but one feature doesn’t out bad another, there’s harmony in it’s badness. Oh and did I mention the previous owners faux finished all the trim in the kitchen to match the ugly faux wood laminate?

I love the look of “collage” art walls that I often see in catalogs and in pictures of other people’s homes, but whenever I try to do it in my own home my type A personality takes over and I’m unhappy if things aren’t in a straight line and the frames don’t all have the same feeling. Any advice on how to approach this project so I get a similar feeling but have enough order so that I don’t take it all down by the end of the weekend?

I have slowly been redecorating my apartment (post law school/no money) and don’t know what to do with my evil brown/brown peach-ish bathroom. The walls are white/off-white but the tiles go four feet or so up the wall. I’ve considered covering them with cloth and putting FLOR on the ground (I can’t retile nor do I want to in a rental) but I’m not sure how well this would work in a bathroom b/c of water, steam, make-up, etc.

I have low ceilings and a long room 23×17, how do do I paint to help make the ceilings seem higher than they are. They are currently popcorn ceilings, and I can see some seams from the drywall. Do I need to replace the ceiling as well as paint the room?

I am a renter and constantly struggle with inexpensive ways to make my home “mine” without actually changing the structure. I hate to spend the money improving the actual house since it’s so old and needs updates on basically everything. Besides painting the walls, do you have any tips or tricks to mask the things I cannot change and make it feel more like a space I love?

What’s the best way to break up a HUGE living room. I am having a very hard time coming up with a furniture arrangement.

I currently live in my great grandmothers house, she passed away many years ago and the family has maintained her home and collection of art and antiques. I should mention that this home was built in 1760 and renovated and restored by my great grand parents in 1914. They collected fine antiques and were artists. I love living here and am lucky to be surrounded by so much family history but I find that I miss being able to express my personal style (I am not allowed to paint/remove furniture or change many things. Any tips on how to make the already painted/decorated space a little bit more me would be greatly appreciated. PS, my style is a bit bohemian, with dashes of modernism mixed in.

What is a good way to deal with odd ceilings? I want to paint my bedroom a light, dove grey. The walls go straight up and then there is about an 18 inch slant in, and then the ceiling. Currently the slant and the ceiling are white but I would love to spice it up. Any good rules of thumb for dealing with oddly angled ceiling, circa 1988? I have also thought about installing crown molding to make the slanted part feel more purposeful. I know this is probably hard to envision, so just some rules of thumb would be great.

My fiance and I are only 11 days away from our wedding. We will have a considerable amount of combining and moving in our future (we’ve never lived together and he is a Naval physician). What items do you recommend investing in very early on when combining two rather pared-down households? IE: furniture, decor, household appliances?

Are bathroom rugs passe? I’m finding myself wanting to get rid of them but my husband likes them. What are your thoughts on rugs in the kitchen, bathroom or other places that aren’t carpeted?

I live in a TINY basement apartment where the kitchen living room and office (which consists of a computer desk) are all in the same room. Any organization suggestions to make our space as efficient as possible but also to make it look good?

I am a young DIYer with little construction experience. What do you recommend as a hands-on way to get familiar with the tools needed in a basic remodel project?

What are the best places and colors to infuse color into an apartment with basic blah beige walls? We’d like to keep large purchase items (ie Sofa) neutral as well but crave punchy color!

I have an outdated almond colored bathroom vanity. The vanity base and cabinet doors are wood, but are covered with a horrible laminate. The countertop is covered with the same laminate. I’m a renter, but are there any ways to the vanity’s look?

I’m moving to a new apartment that’s not huge but has several small rooms. One of these rooms is a bonus room that I’m not sure what to do with. I could make it into an extra bedroom, a separate dining room (we have an eat in kitchen), or a den. Any of these options would get some use, but I want to really maximize this space well. Any ideas?

I live in a apartment where I can’t paint the walls and I’m on a VERY tight budget. What are your top low cost ideas for redoing a space?

Our basement flooded and now I’ll have a chance to re-do it but I find myself wanting the space to be too many things (tv room, storage, spare bedroom.) What’s the limit to what one big room can do?
