Twitter Chat with John Gidding, and a HUGE Giveaway!

You remember the lovely bedroom redesign that I did with the help of Membership Reward Points from American Express, yes? Well now I am working with them again to host a Twitter Chat with HGTV designer John Gidding. John will be giving tons of advice next Thursday on how to decorate and find creative ways to stretch your budget — just like I did using my points.

John and I will be on Twitter for one hour on Thursday, July 29 at 8:30p.m. EST/ 5:30 p.m. PST (search #AmexHome). John will be answering your home design questions about anything from creating amazing guest spaces to choosing the right colors for your home. He’ll also have plenty of inexpensive ways to get your home ready for sale and ideas for upgrading rooms on a tight budget.

Now, you may have noticed the whole HUGE giveaway thing we’ve got going on here…

How do you enter to win?

Comment on this post with your questions for John and we’ll discuss some of them during our Twitter Chat. By leaving a comment, you’ll be entered to win items like a KitchenAid mixer, a Bissell vacuum, or a set of Cuisinart cookware (all of which can be bought with Membership Rewards points). There will be ten winners in this giveaway! Here are the prizes:

  1. Cuisinart® 10-Piece Commercial Cookware Set

Here’s my question: If you have $5,000 to use to update a house, how would you spend it? Would you pick one room, would you just do the exterior, or would you choose lots of small updates around the entire house?

What approach would you suggest for choosing a countertop color for a kitchen? It’s a major investment that I don’t want to mess up! Specifically, we have white cabinets and currently have a white tile countertop. I’m waffling between staying with white (just in a solid surface that won’t have grout to keep clean) or going with something more high-contrast (say, closer to our dark taupe ceramic tile floor). I wondered what to consider when choosing between matching or contrasting with the cabinets.

Is it better to do a room redesign all at once, or have your vision and work towards it in pieces? I’d like to update our living room, but funds are low. I’m worried, though, that if i do it in pieces, I’ll get “sidetracked,” and the look of the room won’t come together the way I envisioned.

My boyfriend and I just moved into, and are currently decorating, our first solo apartment. It’s downtown, all hardwood floors with a beautiful view! We really lucked out. The place is /tiny/, though, which presents a problem. Since we can’t have his-and-hers rooms, we’re having to mesh together two pretty different styles. Nicole’s most recent MIY has been great, but I have a more specific issue.

I have a great suede-feeling tufted ivory couch (http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=351454&CategoryID=35581), and the boyfriend is afraid to sit on it. He thinks it’s a little too pretty to zonk out on. He wants a “man couch”, something durable, clunky and leather. I’ve looked for ages and haven’t found anything that matches the style of what I already have (especially something that would fit in our limited space). I think there’s room for it if it’s a two seater, but nothing has seemed right. Do you have any suggestions on where to find a dark leather loveseat that might fit in among prettier, girlier things, that would be comfortable enough to flop onto after work?

    Thank you so much!

Wow, this is perfectly timed as I am moving on Saturday! My boyfriend and I are both artists/graphic designers and we both work from home. This will be our first apartment together! So excited! It’s a loft-style, exposed brick, small 2br.

My question relates to all of the paper and small-scale art and collage materials that we are constantly shuffling around. We either need to store them, display, or both and I’d love suggestions on how. Something that can display many small pieces of art, zines, and magazines…Like a rack or some kind? I currently have a wooden bench, but I failed to keep up with maintaining it and it looks gross now. Will metal just rust? Will plastic get moldy? Will wood warp? Thanks!!

I mixing patterns and styles into something incredibly kitschy and wild SOO wrong? Our style is a hodge podge of everything from mid-century modern to granny chic to mission style. I don’t want to pick just one! Should we tone down on the awesomeness??

What is the most cost effective way to upgrade/transform countertops? I have the uber cheap standard builder’s laminate countertops and I would really like to do something nicer in both my kitchen and my bathrooms.

What is your favorite decorating rule to break or throw out the window?

    Thanks!

We just moved into a new home and have a family room with too interesting cut-outs on one wall–it’s got the fireplace and a huge TV opening and a big shelf with two windows over that and a cutout over the fireplace for a picture and an angled cutout above that! It makes me a bit dizzy. How can I turn that all into usable visually attractive space?

IS gray a trend for wall color, or does it have the staying power to become a classic?

My boyfriend and I moved in together a little while ago and turned one of our bedrooms into an office. We each have our own desk, and space-wise things are going fine, but his decor style is utilitarian and manly and mine is homey and feminine.

How can we combine the two into a single space so that we’re both happy and our home office doesn’t look schizophrenic?

We have a 1905 bungalow with 10′ ceilings and no built-in lighting in some rooms. The attic isn’t finished so we have access to the ceilings.

There are a lot of projects in progress so we don’t have a lot of money. What is an inexpensive way to add lighting without breaking the bank?

I have a house full of neutral colored furniture and walls. How do I appropriately put some color into these spaces without it looking like it’s too much?

We have a big brown sectional that is great for the family but not so great to look at. How do you make a large, dark piece of furniture work when one likes lighter, brighter and airy looks?

Our bed is situated in front of the window with these black and white graphic designed curtains. I’m not sure if I should go with solid bedding or try to mix and match another print. What are your thoughts?
    Thanks for the opportunity!!

We’d like to put wood floors in our kitchen, but need something that can stand up to 2 dogs and kids. Any suggestions for durable wood (or wood-look) flooring that is scratch resistant?

I have some wooden tables and book cases and even dressers that I would love to paint, but, I don’t know how to paint them without ending up with all the brush strokes. How do I do it so it doesn’t finish with brush strokes? I want it to look smooth and professional. Please help me with this!!!

What can I do to the slanted ceiling in our master bedroom to make it make sense. We’ve avoided doing anything to it for fear it will stand out more!

We have a long couch against a long wall with a big expanse of white space over it. I’m not sure what to hang there. What I see in magazines in these situations is usually a very balanced, centered display over the couch (two similarly sized pictures with a mirror in the middle, for example). I think this will make the couch and wall just look longer. Am I right? Should I do something more off-centered and less matchy? If so, what?

I just bought a set of matching coffee table and 2 side tables for our living room. While I’m waiting for its delivery, I’m seeing a lot of inspiring photos on the web for living rooms that don’t have matching tables. Am I committing a huge home deco no-no?
