My dollhouse has seven rooms. Eleanor and I went to Paper Source to pick out some wallpaper for it, and we came home with three pretty papers to go along with the one I had already picked for the bathroom. I think wallpapering four rooms in the dollhouse is probably the maximum allowed to avoid pattern overdose, so I’ll paint the rest.
The stairs are getting a striped ribbon runner, but I’m still not sure what to do with the stairs themselves. Paint them a fun color? Or shiny gold? Or go more classic with wooden treads and white risers?
I love planning these little details.

So cute. I love the paper choices. And the runner is fab. Gold on the stairs would be stunning!

Very nice!
This might not even be something you have considered yet, or I may have missed a post, but what dolls are thinking about getting for the house?

I saw an article in the NY Times about miniature sweets and when I got to this paragraph, I thought of you right away…
Stephanie Kilgast, an artist in Paris, specializes in minuscule versions of desserts: perfect French macarons, no bigger than a blueberry, neatly packed into a gift box the size of a matchbook; elaborately frosted three-layer cakes as wide as a nickel; gingerbread men small enough to be worn as post earrings. Through custom orders from collectors of miniatures and dollhouse aficionados, she manages to earn a living from miniature sweets, crafting incredibly detailed fruit tarts and plates of pains au chocolat. (They are all made of polymers and not edible.)

Looks like so much fun! I love the striped runner! I immediately thought of turquoise or yellow underneath on the stairs…

With a stair runner that sharp, I also vote for a strong solid colour on the stairs. My first thought was shiny black but some of the other suggestions have me thinking.
… what about a glossy, deep, mustard yellow?
I cannot wait to see the papers go up!

What type (weight?) paper are you using? I’ve heard that using craft paper with that Mod Podge stuff works, but I’m a little nervous about it.
thanks!

You are totally inspiring me to pull out my old dollhouse and renovate it! My dad and I built it from a kit in the 80’s (I have the scars to prove it), and it’s been in its custom case since the mid-90’s. I think it’s time. It’s the Glencroft Dollhouse kit, a lovely English Tudor – and they STILL MAKE IT! :) :)

I love that you’re including Eleanor in this project. Keep her as involved as possible. I remember a week or two as a child when my mom and I redid an old family dollhouse while my dad was out of town. We picked out paint, flooring (tile, wood, carpet), and furniture then completely renovated it. I don’t really remember using the dollhouse much after those weeks, but decorating that dollhouse is one of my favorite memories with my mom. We had so much fun and got to spend so much sweet time together. Have so much fun with her!

I just had to comment because I think a shiny buttery gold on the steps would look so cool! I want those stairs in my house!

I am so excited to see this. Your dollhouse creation will be spectacular!

If I survive re-doing my real house, I might have to give this a go!

Paper Source!!! I’ve never heard of it and I need pretty papers! Thanks for sharing… Can’t wait to see how the wallpapers turn out!

I can’t wait. Your dollhouse is going to be the prettiest, for sure.

i am sorry but you are totally getting me geeked about this as well!! i want to go out and buy a bare dollhouse to decorate too! the idea of the gold stairs amazed me – can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Gold might be fun. I also love citrusy yellow with black and white. Or maybe a bright pink like Honeysuckle, which I noticed was Pantone’s color of the year in fashion.

I’m so excited to see your house progress, the ribbon is darling for the stair runner!! I loved playing with my doll house when I was little. So tempting to buy one!

I can’t wait to see what you do with it! Earlier this year, my daughter and I finished my old doll house, which my dad and I had put together when I was a little girl, but never painted. My daughter and I painted it and chose wallpaper. Hers only has 5 rooms, so we used 3 different wallpaper patterns and a couple of solid colors. You can see it here: http://www.greenyourdecor.com/8458/mothers-day-diy-fun-finishing-doll-house/
We love the way it turned out, and we’re having too much fun furnishing it a little bit at a time!

Have you heard of the House of Miniatures dollhouse items? They sell on ebay and they are really affordable. You put them together yourself and you can stain or paint them. They won’t break the bank…. just an idea.
