Making it Yours 10B: A Blush of Pink

Making it Yours 10B: Traditional Red Rug

I’m basing three different looks on a single rug for this edition of Making it Yours, per a reader’s request. She wanted to know how to incorporate a traditional red rug with her more modern taste, so that’s exactly what I’m doing. Yesterday, we saw the rug paired with a cool palette of mint and blue.

I like to revisit items throughout the series, because who among us redecorates a room from scratch each time? It’s much more likely that we make small changes and work with what we already have. Here, we have our traditional red rug paired with the same sofa, coffee table, side table, and brass mirror. The pom-pom print and black faceted vases have also made a return. We’re heading over to a warmer palette though, with peachy pink and yellow, punctuated by bold black and white. If pink is not your color, imagine swapping it out in favor of warm yellows, creamy neutrals, or crisp white.

For the third and final look next week, we’ll see the rug in a home office/library. I’m thinking of going dark with the walls, and the furniture will either go super-mod with lucite, or it will lean industrial. Any preference?

  • I thought I could never love a room with that rug, but with the striped vases and flower print? I am sold! :)

Thank you! That means a lot, because working with the rug (which is NOT my usual style) was a fun challenge.

  • Hi Nicole,
This rug gives me some kind of an Asian look. I have a rug like this one in blue and green color in my home. I am in love with the bird too…and the chair.
By the way, how do you think about adding a pair of wicker chairs to the room too? Won’t that go with the rug?

  • Industrial please. I love this design. The bird make me think of an indian design blanket from Old Town Albuquerque.

  • Super mod- my choice for the office. Nice job on these!

Oh! I love that you featured the Kähler Omaggio vases! They’re everywhere in Denmark and I picked up a yellow one on my last trip. So cute!

  • I love seeing how you work in your mind what to pair with the red rug. I think so far both palettes are pretty amazing. I really like the wooden stool/ storage piece you found for both ideas. Can’t wait to see the next combination!

I LOVE this. And I didn’t know that I liked these traditional red rugs?? I like this one more than the one from yesterday, but I do like that one as well. Can you deliver this to my house please?

  • I love the rug, and it is a wool rug (I only buy wool)!

I looked specifically for a wool rug, since the idea of this edition is that the rug is a last-forever kind of piece.

I love Making it Yours – if I don’t love the room, there is always something cute you pick out (like artwork, vases, pillows) – so they are always welcome in my book.
In this case, I love the lamp. I just wish it wasn’t $300. Ugh! :(

  • I love everything but the rug.

Ha, the rug is kind of the point of this one! Glad you like the rest though. It would be cute with a white Moroccan rug, the likes of which have been popping up all over the place lately.

Oh! I like this a lot. Especially the chair, bird and the striped vases! Truly Lovely!

Definitely 100% buying a couple of the faceted vases and hardcore eyeballing that bird. Thanks for the reminder that I clearly need to check High Street Market way more often!

  • love the black and pink. and i love that you kept some of the same items from yesterdays room. i feel like even more than yesterday the rug grounds the room because its the darkest color, but also disappears in a way. such a fun room…kinda wish it actually existed!

  • Sofie

I love both the print and the vases!
