Brandon and I went out to test rocking chairs and gliders this weekend, and we chose an upholstered glider with a matching ottoman for the nursery. SO COMFORTABLE. I think I could have taken a nap right there in the store it was so big and squishy and soft.
And then of course, we have the gorgeous new Eames rocker for the living room. The rocker is an 80/20 mix of style vs. comfort (though it is still very comfortable), and the glider is an 80/20 mix of comfort vs. style (though it’s not bad for a glider). Form and function for each, just in different ratios.

Ours is from Modernica.

I know I saw it on your site…but did you purchase your Eames rocker from MOdernica or DWR???

as a mother of 4 , TAKE THIS ADVICE, go for the comfort , I have the eames rocker – looks good, but alas, not good for roaking a baby back to sleep at 4 in the am. you need the a nursing ottoman, which has a fixed pull out component you can push against so you can adjust your now-asleep-arm with out waking the peanut. also make sure the rocker is something you canput your head back against ( high enough) and the best are the ones that recline…… also , spring for a lumbar type pillow….. so excited for you!!!!

Comfort is a must, and don’t forget neck support! You’ll want the chair back to be high enough that your neck isn’t strained and your head flopping around as you doze with your baby in your arms. We had the upholstered set from babies r us and it was great for sitting but not napping. I think they now have a very similar chair with a higher back.

BTW, Nurseryworks furniture is well made. My husband was a bit dubious about the Sleepytime rocker but agreed to it because I wanted it, however, he was pleasantly surprised by how well made it was when it arrived. You have to attach the runners/rockers, so when it’s upside down, you can see the construction. I was impressed enough with it that we went with their Loom crib when it came time. Attractive modern design, green construction, and not ridiculously priced. We haven’t put it together yet as Aurora is still in her bassinet. Which, I don’t know if you’re planning on a bassinet at first, but I found having a rocking bassinet invaluable. There have been many times that we’ve been able to rock her back to sleep without picking her up (which then wakes our baby completely.) We have the Nature’s Purest bassinet, it’s one of the few inexpensive ones that rocks.

Style + comfort + a great price (50%off!) = the Nurseryworks Sleepytime Rocker, Storytime Rocker, or the Goodnight Glider/Ottoman. … I personally have the Storytime Rocker + really love it. Great for all those hours nursing baby while the toddler wants to cozy up too! http://www.fawnandforest.com/categories/50-sale-items/products

FYI, the glider and ottoman will be 30% off starting January 30. I don’t know how long the sale will last, and I think it’s in stores only.

you can always make slipcovers for the glider an ottoman

I have the tiniest little nursery for my son so I went with the Eames rocker (it looks awesome too). I have a gorgeous little pillow on it and just throw a blanket on and I have no complaints at all for nursing my now 11 month old. The Eames rocker will also easily transition to our living room when the nursery days are over too!

[I am reposting here, even though I know you received the email last night.]
Several months ago, AT featured Maxwell’s really stunning glider. Without being a mom or even pregnant, I would still consider this for myself. And it does seem to be a nice hybrid of the Eames and the TRU. The Nurseryworks Sleepytime rocker: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/at-email/perfect-soft-rocker-the-sleepytime-email-from-81308-060319.

That’s “choices,” not “chocies” of course. I’ll slink away now…

Nice chocies! I love the Eames rocker, of course, but I found it to be uncomfortable, but I’m very tall and, um, my ass was pretty large when I was pregnant. (And it still is…wah!) We went with the Nurseryworks Sleepytime rocker. It’s comfortable, although probably not the sort of “sink into it” comfortable of your glider. But I like the looks of it a lot; I wanted to be able to reuse the rocker in the living room or den after the baby got older.
http://www.nurseryworks.net/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=20 And we got it for less than half price when it was on sale last spring! (I think they may be on sale again.) Same exact combination as the founders of Apartment Therapy, the ecru microfiber with pale wood runners.

:shakes head: Just another sign of my pregnancy stupidity.
Thanks for your help! :)

Jessica, I linked to them in the post – they’re from Babies R Us. The chair is very soft and squishy which is what I was looking for. If you want a chair with more firmness and support, this isn’t the one. ;) BRU has a cream colored chair on their site from the same maker that was just as comfortable, but the back of the chair didn’t go up as high, so you can’t really rest your head as easily.
Jessica
I’m not sure if you posted this previously, but where did you find this glider? I have been looking particularly for a brown or cream glider for our nursery, and the ones I have found have been rock hard. Unfortunately, I live in a small town where there are absolutely no places to go and try these out without having to take a long 3-4 hour drive.
Thanks for the help!

While the eames rocker is truly lovely, you REALLY want something that you can’t easily rock over backwards in, or easily miss with your butt when sitting down at 2 AM when you are 1/4 awake and holding an infant, or something that will move when rocking into the hot radiator that you burn your arm on. All of these things happened to me, and I’m just a dad (yes, OK, an extremely clumsy dad!).

Exactly what I thought, Cindy. Nicole, you have very good eye comes to fabric. I believe you can make it both comfortable and stylish.
Cindy
I really like how plush the glider looks. And while the upholstery looks fine, you can always re-upholster it down the road to up the style factor!

echoing what the other moms have said…you will be so happy you chose something comfortable for the nursery especially if you are planning to nurse. it looks very cozy and i am sure will go great in your chic nursery. good for you!

I really like the Eames chair, I think it’s very stylish. I also think that it is so much fun to design a nursery… specially at the first time :-)
Here are some great design ideas for nurseries if you want some inspiration :

Some of the spaces have beautiful glider/ottoman.
Enjoy,

I am so excited to see you and Brandon fighting over those late night feedings sitting pretty in that cozy comfort chair. I miss those days.
Jessica
Loving the comfort look! I figure the Eames would be terribly uncomfortable!

We got a really cozy glider for our daughter’s room — I can’t wait for her to show up so I can rock her back & forth in it. (She’s 3 days past due today!)
Kelsea
I have the same glider/ottoman in my daughter’s nursery. What is lacks in style, it certainly makes up for in comfort. This chair got me through many long nights! You won’t regret it.
bungalowbliss
The line of the back of the Eames chair is so delicate and gracious (especially in the pic for your earlier post). But I’m digging the glider and ottoman combo for its come-snuggle quality.
Nice choices!
lori
having had a uncomfortable option with my first and a comfy option with my second, i’d say this is one of those instances where comfort wins hands down. you’ll be glad at 3 in the morning when you’re soft and cushy!
Terri
I have had two babies and one is almost weaned- my rocker/glider days are numbered. My one regret in all the nursery purchasing flurry is to not have gotten a comfy rocker. I didn’t even sacrifice style for comfort either which I probably could be okay with ;) Instead, I went for the cheapest glider (you know the one) and I HATE IT. You are smart to get this Nicole, it looks heavenly and it will look even better (50/50 perhaps)as you stumble out of your room in the middle of the night and get to plop down in coziness. I envy the cat naps you will be able to take in this.
laura
i love the eames rocker, i find that small seat cushion makes a huge difference to the comfort level. if you put a little piece of a cheap thin non slip rug pad under the cushion it does not slip around at all.
Manda
I want that rocker! *heart thuds*

Those chairs look like really cool additions. We’ve got a little space in our apartment that is just begging for a chair, and I don’t know where to start. We’re in Berlin, Germany, so I’m still trying to figure out exactly where to go for those kinds of things.
That comfort chair looks just perfect for a nap!
