Stupid E-mail, Smart Phones

I did something stupid to my e-mail. As a result, most of the e-mail I thought I had been sending had in fact gone nowhere.

A warning and an apology: This is a boring post. Sorry. I’ll have something better next time.

I don’t have a laptop, so I decided to get a phone that could check my e-mail. E-mail and internet access are essential to my work, and I figured it would be a smart investment.

I had T-Mobile, so I bought a Blackberry Pearl. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that it only duplicates the e-mail on the phone – it doesn’t actually sync with the server. You have to manually go in and read each message and delete things one by one. So for someone like me that gets a million e-mails a day (not including all the spam that my Apple mail filters out that I normally wouldn’t have to see), that’s really not very useful.

I figured I was missing something, so I called customer service. They walked me through the process of working around the default method so that the e-mail on my phone would actually be up to date with the e-mail on my server. Wonderful. Except it screwed everything up.

Yeah. So I returned that phone, switched over to AT&T, and bought an iPhone instead.

iPhone

I love it.

Anyway, I’m re-responding to the bajillion e-mails that I got in the last week and a half. Again. Sorry if you’re one of the people I haven’t gotten back to yet… I’m working on it.

So let me get this straight. You re-bought the phone Brandon got you for Christmas that you previously returned and you have two dining room tables? Are you sure you’re not pregnant? Or…me? ;-)

Uh huh. I’m just a wee bit crazy (not pregnant, as far as I know). Also, that money tree in the backyard is paying out. Whoo!

Hee. I forgot I told anyone about the whole fact that I did HAVE an iPhone briefly (that was returned unopened), a mere two months ago.

You will never be the same again! I love mine. I sent an email about how I bookmarked your site on my iPhone and made an adorable little graphic of your face! Ha.

About that money tree—do you think you could splice a little branch off and send it to so-Cal? I’m sure I could get it to grow in our lovely climate. ;)

  5. Making it Lovely Avatar

OH! I remember your email, but I didn’t realize that was you! I thought it was really funny that there’s an icon out there of my FACE. :)

Jules, sure. There’s plenty to go around.

Aw crap Nicole! My 9 to 5 is actually all about syncing the Blackberry emails, contacts, calender, tasks with your email client smoothly. It even makes sure it so that if you lose your BB all you have to do is find a new one, stick in your sim and you have all your info back again seamlessly. I was actually going to email you about it once we were further along (we’re a startup).

But.. uh.. we arent supporting the iPhone yet, so i cant help you out there. ;)

Ooo, hopefully you got the new 16GB one! I love my husband’s iTouch (basically the iPhone without the phone part). Maybe in the future we’ll get iPhones. They are so sleek.

smart move to switch to iphone :) i’ve been hearing lots of previous blackberry users switching over to iphone for reasons you’ve specified (+more) i adore your blog btw, i love all the designs that are possible inspirations

ps: if it’s not too much to ask, what’s the font you used in this? http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2410/2180000968_1a9eeb9822_o.jpg

HEEEE! Welcome to the wonderful land of the iPhone!! I had about 3 seconds of guilt when I slapped down my credit card. As soon as I opened it up….the joy. oh, the joy.

Lili, that’s OK. It’s all for the best, as now I have my sweet sweet iPhone.

I bought the 8GB version. It was enough of an expense just to get that!

Lai, that font is Los Niches. Isn’t it a great one?

Kim, same here. Except I paid for it with my business Amex (it’s a business expense!), so I’ll have to pay for it when the statement comes. But oh yes… the joy.

Holy moley! You’re right about the price on the 16GB one. I must have looked at it wrong because I thought it was the price of the 8GB one.

we have to wait until may when our current contract runs up, then iphone here we come.

do you have to pay seperately for phone and internet? or is it one charge? i haven’t looked into that at all. is it affortable? we pay about $120 now for both me and husband on regular crappy phones.

I am so jealous of you all having the iphone. They aren’t bringing it out in Australia for ages. :( We are so behind the times!

now, is the iphone properly syncing your mail? because ours never, ever have. we see the options for them to sync, but it never works properly. boo, hiss.

but we’ve had iphones since launch day last june and we love them just as much now as the day we bought them! i’m bitter about the 16gb’s, though… we paid $599.00 each for two 8gb’s, blerg.

oh, and jamie, we pay something like $120.00 every month for 1400 shared minutes, 200 texts, and unlimited everything else (including data). we pay less with our iphones than we did with less plan features on our t-mobile sidekicks.

  19. Making it Lovely Avatar

Jamie, you choose the phone plan you want and then add the $20 internet (data) service. I’m paying $60/month (total). I have a business plan, but I think the personal wireless plans start at $60 too.

My phone is syncing perfectly with my e-mail – I love it! And this is so dorky, but I love that it makes the same “whoosh” noise when I send an e-mail as it does in Apple mail on my computer. Such a satisfying sound.

I’m happy for you :-) I really want one of these, but I would also want some kind of pda capability, so I can read PDFs and word docs. I keep hearing the mac buzz about a possible mac PDA, seeing as how they invented them back in the day. Anyhow, just thought I’d chime in. I’ve been a silent reader for a long while. :-)

lakshmi, you can read pdf’s and word docs on the iphone.

nicole, what email host do you use? ours has never worked and it aggravates me!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my iphone! It’s helping me to stay organized!

All of my sites (and e-mail) are through Dreamhost. I’m using Apple Mail (or whatever it’s actually called – the default Mac e-mail program), and all of my accounts are setup with IMAP (don’t use POP).

Wow… That was a good idea. Apple is better at everything. How is it? I’m thinking of getting myself one come July 11th.
