In Search of a Bathroom Mirror

I’m looking for something interesting that I can paint. Basically, I want to do something like this.

I love the look of the mirror extending over both the sink and the toilet, but the ceiling is very low in the basement bathroom (75″) so we need sconces. And I think the sconces should be centered with the sink, right?

I’m hoping to find a mirror that’s no larger than 20″ x 36″ (like this, but without the spooky glass).

  • Do you have the source of the green mirror photo? Your link does not work, thanks.

It was a vintage mirror that the homeowner painted green. I don’t know why the link broke and I don’t remember with certainty, but it may have been featured on Design*Sponge originally.

  • I can’t wait until we buy our first house and I can do something like this. Thanks for the fantastic ideas!

  • Oh gosh, don’t forget Etsy! Search under “vintage” there’s some good stuff there. Check weekly ;)

  • I have a large collection of mirrors. Some in storage (boo, I have a small house). Though my favorites are all about the house. The old glass, is quite becoming. The patina grows on you after awhile. I have a ultra old one that’s rippled and odd like a fun-house. You can only see clearly if you’re standing a foot away.

Try all local antiques malls. They’re the best place for old mirrors!

LOVE this bathroom and that mirror is exactly what I’ve been trying to find for ours!! We have one (yes, one) very small bathroom in our house that we share and I love the idea of a big mirror over the entire sink/potty area too for both beauty and practical reasons. I’ll be interested to see what you come up with!

  • Gorgeous. I would die for a mirror like that- hope you find what you are looking for!

I found that identical mirror curbside.
It is now hanging above my fireplace, I painted black but now I am thinking a fresh, fun color may be in order.

  • That bathroom is one of my favorites! I love how they took a bold piece like that mirror like the bathroom.

You should definitely try Good Will for something unique like that. Lots of diamonds in the rough just waiting to be redone! :)

You may want to try The Painted Lady on Damen in Bucktown. She usually has a handful of mirrors for $100 or less. She also has inexpensive interesting frames, which she’ll turn into mirrors (she turned a frame into a mirror for me for about $60 total!) I can relate to wanting to find interesting pieces fast. I lost my LaGrange Park home in a fire last summer. It’s been hard to part with vintage furniture and decor that had been collected over 10 years. I’m getting a lot of good inspiration from your blog, as we plan to start turning our new house into a home. Good luck with your search!

  • There is a company called The Organic Bloom that makes frames almost exactly like what you posted. I am sure that with a simple email they could make a frame big enough for your bathroom and then just have a mirror cut to fit.

    The website is http://www.theorganicbloom.com

    Good luck!

  • I have a similar mirror I was going to Craigslist. Pick up should not be a problem–I’m in south OP. Email me if you’re interested and I’ll send you a pic.

  • i <3 the lighting in that bathroom with the green mirror. But im all about candle lighting instead of holy brightness!

Looks like an old bureau mirror from Good Will. You can always make a mirror from a picture frame. Remember that your kids will be using this bathroom a lot (the one in the basement, right?) so you want the mirror to be low. If you can’t center the sconces, etc, don’t worry about it. One of the problems I had in the past, was overlighting. I thought I needed a four bulb fixture in the windowless bathrooms. They curve down a little and reflect into the HUGE mirror, so it is blinding. Live and learn.

  • That mirror is amazing! It’d be the perfect size to replace our crappy 1980s sheet of faux mirror too. Hmm. Where would you find something like that?

  • What about sconces on the opposite wall and a modern picture light over the mirror?

  • love this shot of the bathroom…

  • That’s a beautiful inspiration pic! Good luck with your mirror search!

  • I love love love that bathroom. That’s great inspiration.

  • Wow! Crazy way to start the day. I have the mirror you want (painted a grayed aqua)over my fireplace. Love the idea of it off-centered in the bathroom. The odd thing is I also have the spooky glass mirror and mine’s painted the same red as well. Little bit of a deja vu jolt.

Good luck finding the mirror. I’ve had mine for years and it’s worked beautifully in a number of locations.

  • I’m not sure exactly how you’d install it, but it would be interesting to have the really wide mirrow with the sconces mounted to/through the mirror. That way the mirror would bounce extra light through the room!

I just found something like this on craigslist last week! The glass was old and gave me the creeps, so I immediately took it to a glass shop, and they are replacing the whole mirror part for only $30. Good luck!

If I find a mirror that’s inexpensive enough, I wouldn’t mind replacing the glass. I just don’t want to spend a couple hundred dollars and still have to paint it and fix it!
