Would this just get hopelessly dirty in my living room?
(available at CB2)
Ew. Ew, ew, eeeewwwww. We’ve decided to redo the kitchen. Yay! …and YUCK! What we’re finding is gross.
Our original plan was to redo the upstairs (blue) bathroom. However, as we started looking at the kitchen, we realized that it needed our attention first. The bathroom is not my style, but it’s in fine shape. The kitchen, while not horrible looking, was not faring so well.
So… we’ve already ordered (and received) a new fridge and dishwasher. The fridge is in place (we’re not changing the general layout), but the dishwasher is still in its box. We’ve also ordered a new stove, but it hasn’t arrived yet. The cabinets have been ordered (Lidingö from IKEA), and they will be delivered tomorrow.
We have a budget of $10,000. It’s a good amount of money (to us, at least)… but it doesn’t go all that far in a kitchen. So far, we’ve spent…
fridge: $1200
stove: $2000
dishwasher: $800
range hood: $175
cabinets: $2000
paint & supplies: $50
===========
total (so far): $6225
We still need a sink and faucet, countertops (probably laminate), knobs, lighting, window treatments, and any plumbing/electrical work that we can’t do ourselves. I think we’re on track.
The walls are plaster, and I’m nervous about hanging the cabinetry. I don’t want our glasses and plates to come crashing down! I feel like we (Brandon and I) can do this though. I’m handy! I just keep telling myself we can do it!
I never thought I’d use tassels in my home. I have nothing against them really, but I couldn’t see myself using them for anything. That all changed when I saw these lovelies:
There they are with the paint color for the living room. Aren’t they great? Sort of chichi, but what’s so bad about that? I will be using them as curtain tie-backs, and they will be fabulous.
We’ve had some phone and internet issues, but they’ve been resolved so it’s back to work for me! I’ve setup my desk and painted the office already. It’s nice to have at least one semi-finished space in the house. Especially since I spend so much time at my desk.
The office is definitely not finshed, but it’s not horrible either. The closet has no door, and the blinds on the window are not my cup of tea. Oh, and the other side of the room looks like this. Messy!
Did I do the right thing by only bringing the pink up to the picture rail? I’m not really sure. The color I chose for the top of the room and the ceiling was “oyster” by Benjamin Moore. I thought it was a gorgeous grey/lavender, but it just looks white. Oh well – at least it picks up on the white of my desk and bookshelf. And it’s certainly an improvement over the original state of the room. It was peach before (yuck). Here’s a reminder:
Oddly, the baseboard and picture rail were painted the same peach. I guess I can see blending in the picture rail, but the baseboard too? The trim around the doors and the window were still wood. I ended up matching the brown in the wood trim as closely as possible and painting over the peach. I suppose the correct thing to do would have been to strip off the paint and then stain. I could still do that at some point in the future though (if I decide to). For now, there’s enough work to do in the house without adding ‘paint stripping’ to the list.
What a smart little side table!
It’s the Devon table by Victoria Hagan, and it’s only $50 from Target.
I might use it by our orange and white Anthropologie chair…
…or I’ll place it between two slipper chairs centered on the living room window. Once the room is in better shape (there are boxes everywhere right now), I’ll try both ways and see which I like.
