Our Dresses for My Sister’s Wedding

My sister, Ashley, is getting married in September! She found her wedding dress months ago, and it’s beautiful. Ivory with lace and a little beading, gorgeous details down the back, and just a bit of a train. Completely different (much more formal) than what she thought she was going to choose, but when she put it on, her face lit up. It was the dress.

I’ll be the matron of honor (yay!), and Eleanor will be a flower girl. We went with Ashley, my youngest sister (Francesca, also a bridesmaid), my mom, and Calvin to BHLDN and the Nordstrom on Michigan Avenue over the weekend to look for our dresses. A girls’ day out (plus bonus baby boy).

Brandon and August will also be in the wedding party (Calvin is too little), but my sister hasn’t decided what the guys are wearing yet. The ladies though — she’s got that down! Each bridesmaid will be wearing a floor-length chiffon dress, and we’re free to choose the style we like best, and even the color from within her palette. (Pink was an option, so that’s why I’m going with because of course I am.) I’d had my eye on a specific Jenny Yoo dress, and it did not disappoint! I’m on the lookout now for a dress for Eleanor. I’ve ordered this one, but if it’s too big we’ll likely go with this instead.

We still have plenty of time to choose the accessories and Ashley hasn’t made a final decision yet on some of those details, but this is the general look that me and miss E will be wearing!

  • Wardrobe Updates for Spring

    Wardrobe Updates for Spring

I’m about halfway through this pregnancy now. As I grow, I’ve been sticking mostly to the maternity clothes I have from when I was pregnant the first time around with Eleanor, five years ago. Let’s just say… I’m not as excited about my wardrobe as one could be. Nordstrom Rack is now shoppable online, so I had some fun checking out the new site and putting together my favorite finds. I spotted a cute pair of straight leg maternity jeans, and below I concentrated on shoes, accessories, and jewelry. You know, the stuff that always fits.

    Nordstrom Rack

    1. Sugarlips Long Sleeve Blouse
Ever so slightly sheer, and with a mandarin collar.

    2. Eye Candy Los Angeles Green Rock Pendant
I like the simplicity of jewelry that’s essentially a rock on a chain, with a little gold to hold it in place.

    3. Michael Vincent Michaud Round Stud Earrings
The imperfect gold setting makes these interesting.

    4. Cole Haan Bellport Carryall Tote
That punch pink is just so delicious, and perfect with a bit of leather trim.

    5. Bucco Valentony Gladiator Sandal
They go with black and brown, the straps are great, and hello, stripes! For $27. So awesome.

    6. V Optique Pier Readers
For those of you that only need readers (rather than glasses with a full prescription), these are a lovely shape.

    7. Harlyn Silk Colorblock Pocket Shift Dress
The easy shape of this is so perfect, especially from the back. And how cute are those pockets?

    8. Dogeared Initial Ring
I’d wear a stack with my kids’ initials, but I was chuckling thinking of what four letter words I might spell out, knuckle tattoo style.

    9. Vince Camuto Diamond Pattern Ring
A big ring with big impact.

    10. Lucky Embroidered Square Scarf
I am in favor of quirky details like the tassels, and the fabric is a gorgeous shade of pinkish red with embroidery.

    11. Hobo Lorna Crossbody
Big enough to carry everything without being bulky, and the green is a fun color.

    12. Mixx Shuz Jane Ankle Strap Flat
Yes to a bit of unexpected pattern at the heel.

Things sell out quickly, but new Nordstrom Rack goods for women, men, and kids are added to the site weekly, all at up to 70% off and with free shipping over $100. (Plus you have the option of taking things back to the store or sending them back by mail within 90 days, so returns are easy.) The sale events are powered by HauteLook and if you have an account there, you can use it for NordstromRack.com too. The shopping cart lets you add items from both sites, and they ship to the US, Canada, and Australia. And now that they’re online, it’s so much easier to keep an eye out for what’s new. I’d add that dress to my cart, but I think I’m already too big for it and it won’t be practical for nursing. I’m going to go for the scarf and sandals though! They should go a long way toward making my current maternity options a bit more fun.

    Style: Mint, Coral, and Pink

You already know how I feel about coral lately, and pink is my forever love. Mint is right up there too, ever since painting my office a minty hue. Put them all together, add a little pattern into the mix, and I’m a happy lady.

    Style: Equestrian Inspired

This summer has been too darn hot, so I’m moving on sartorially to cooler seasons. As a fan of skirts and dresses, and a gal that lives in Chicago, boots are a must in fall and winter. I got my first (and only) pair of Frye boots a few years ago, and they’ve spoiled me for all others. Mine have buckles, but other than that they look a lot like the boots below (and the price is so good on them right now!).

I’d wear the dress below with the belt and a pair of flat strappy sandals when weather permits, and I’d wear it as below in the winter, but with a pair of cream cable-knit tights. And maybe a jaunty hat. How would you style it?

    Style: Night at the Museum

I like the idea of carrying the makeup pouch below to an art museum event because it’s a little Picasso-like. And maybe there’s something off about me, but I like for there to be something a little off-kilter about my outfit when dressing up. I’d say the casual sketched pouch and bug earrings are doing the trick here.

This is the type of thing I’d wear to a meeting too. Switch out the bag for something a bit bigger, maybe swap the bracelet for a watch, and you’ve got a great creative professional look.
