  • Jayson Home Warehouse Sale

    Jayson Home Warehouse Sale

The Jayson Home Warehouse Sale started today and continues all weekend. I got down there about a half an hour before it opened this morning.

The one of a kind stuff goes immediately, hence the line. People know it and they show up accordingly! There will still be plenty left through the end of the sale though — usually leftover stock they won’t be carrying anymore, slightly damaged goods, or furniture in colors that are being discontinued to make room for the new.

If you’re reading this today, you can watch my Instagram story before it disappears to see how packed the place was! I tried to snap a few of my favorites there and for this quick recap. These chairs? I love them. I want one.

So much goodness everywhere. The warehouse sale is (wait for it) in their warehouse, not the store, but you do get a 15% off coupon good for everything at Jayson Home too.

I was tempted by a lot but only picked up a couple of little boxes and a pink pouch. Having just come off of the latest round of the One Room Challenge, I’m not ready to do more redecorating for at least a little while. But then you see yellow tufted leather wingbacks, and you’re like “where can I use one?”

Nah, I’m good. They were awesome though.

  • Keeping Track of Sales (and a Giveaway!)

Keeping Track of Sales (and a Giveaway!)

I tend to shop for specific clothes only when I need them. A new coat because my old one has become threadbare, or more recently, a few nursing-friendly shirts in my current size. While I’m browsing for the best options, I invariably come across a few finds that I certainly don’t need, but that I do like a whole lot. I’ll often think ‘maybe I’ll pick this up if it goes on sale’ but then I forget to check up on it regularly. I’ve missed out on many an item that went on sale for a great price, but now I’m using PoachIt to keep track of things so that won’t happen again.

    PoachIt

I’m not exactly jumping up to buy all the things! but I do like to be aware of when the stuff I’ve had my eye on goes on sale, and that info can help me decide what to purchase and when. The service works with over 5,000 stores (I’ve been using it on sites like J. Crew, Anthropologie, Nordstrom, and Madewell), and there’s a browser extension (like the ‘pin it’ button) that makes it easy to keep track of items. When the price drops on something you’ve tracked, PoachIt sends you an email, but you can also view your tracked items, follow favorite merchants, and find valid coupons via the website or app.

Besides clothing and things to wear, I’ve been keeping tabs on some of my wish list items for the house. I would love to grab any of these if the day comes that the price is right!

    Home Wish List Items

Now with the holiday season upon us, I’ve started using PoachIt for my home and for gift shopping too. I’m not a fan of hitting the Black Friday sales in person, but I do take advantage of the online sales that accompany it and Cyber Monday. Now it will be even easier to pick up the items on my list at a good price (and maybe treat myself to a little something when everything goes on sale again after the holidays).

    Giveaway

One winner will win a $100 AMEX giftcard to shop for any item they want! Just go to PoachIt, sign up for an account, then comment back on this post with a link to the item you’d want to buy with the gift card if you won. (I’d probably go for that hat I’m tracking; I can never bring myself to buy a nice hat for myself.) One entry per person, and you must be a US resident and enter by midnight CST on December 1st. Good luck!

  • Negotiating at the Souk

    Negotiating at the Souk

It’s funny how we each have our own tactics. I’m in Marrakesh for a few days right now with friends and we’ve been navigating the souks. Our group speaks English and French, and a lot of the sellers here speak one or the other too (or both), in addition to Arabic, so communication has been easy. Negotiating here is expected — even respected when done well! Sometimes we have a bit more buying power as a group since it’s a larger potential sale, but everyone approaches the deal in their own way.

I’ll share more of my trip to France and Morocco when I’m back home in Chicago and can go through my million photos, but I wanted to write about our experience negotiating here while it was still fresh in my mind.

    Tactic 1
This is me. It’s pretty apparent (to me, at least) that I have a Midwestern sensibility. Too nice! Too smiley! But I’ll calculate a good, fair price and not move too much from it (all while being very polite). If you want more than one thing, that’s a good bargaining chip. “I’ll take these, but only for this much. Otherwise just one.” I won’t disparage the goods, but rather say something like “I love it, but I can’t. Not unless you can sell it for this much.”

    Tactic 2
You want the item, but eh! You can leave it. If you get a good deal you’ll take it. Start low, stay low, hold that hand out to shake for a deal, but keep driving it low until the very last second. Be a bit coy, a bit flirty, but ruthless at the same time.

    Tactic 3
Take a simple and straightforward approach. Start way low, and be willing to come up in big jumps between counter-offers. Be kind but somewhat disinterested, and come to a quick agreement. “All right. Can you sell it for this much? That’s as much as I can do.” Done.

    Tactic 4
Feign frustration and indifference. Start way low, point out that we can go elsewhere. “I bought some like this earlier today! Everyone has these — I can get a better price.” Be ready to walk away after a lot of time and haggling, even if you really want what you’re trying to get. Be difficult and very much not Midwestern. (It was fascinating for me to watch in action because I could never do it.) When the deal was done with a handshake, the guy said “you’re tough! Like the sellers here!” with a big smile.

We’re all far from experts of course, but it’s interesting to see what works and what doesn’t. I had a sinking feeling that I wasn’t as good of a negotiator as I could have been (“damn it, you were too nice!”), but realized in the end that we each came away with about the same deal.

We’re still here for little longer so it may be difficult for me to respond to comments, but I’d love to hear from you. Have you been to the souk before? Any tips and tricks on what worked for you?

Perennial Antiques, in Wisconsin’s North Woods

    Perennial Antiques

We went to Perennial Antiques last Saturday, per this suggestion. (Thank you, Tina!) It’s an antique shop about halfway between Rhinelander and Minocqua, in Northern Wisconsin, and only open Thursday through Saturday, Memorial Day weekend through early October.

The owner, Mary, has a good thing going, and I think she knows it. Expect gorgeous finds, but don’t expect extreme bargains. Brandon and I were both in love with a huge work table (4’x7′, maple top, double-sided, generous sized drawers), but besides it being ridiculously heavy and difficult to transport, it was more than we could spend. It was fairly priced, but it was a price I would expect back home in Chicago. (It’s pictured below, with a blue pot of flowers on top.)
