    Velma’s Turtleneck Sweater

I had been looking for a new sweater for fall and winter: something soft, warm, and oversized for maximum coziness. Machine washable too, if possible (because: baby). I took Calvin out with me for my sweater quest and I tried on many close-but-not-quite options. Ah, until I found this one in mustard yellow. Flattering shape! Great color! Throw it in the wash! On sale for $35!

I was feeling pretty cute when I put it on the next morning. I wore a silk top beneath with its shirttail hem peeking out, my favorite cropped skinny pants, patent oxfords, and of course, my glasses. I even had time to put a little makeup on before heading out to walk the kids to school. Look out, world! Stylish mom, comin’ through!

Velma's Turtleneck Sweater is Lookin' Good

So then I realized, about halfway there, who I looked like. Jinkies.

Get in My Closet, Fall Clothes!

The clothes are so good in stores right now! I mean, it’s a mixed bag, but the stuff that is right is really right.

Get in My Closet, Fall Clothes!

    1. Belted Twill Midi Skirt, Ann Taylor
Midi skirt? You’re the one for me. (I have this in black, already.)

    2. BR Monogram Pleated Gaucho Pant, Banana Republic
There are naysayers, but I’ll take you.

    3. Satin Crepe Jumpsuit, Kate Spade
Oh, I will rock a jumpsuit.

    4. Sugarcoated Stone Drop Earrings, Kate Spade
The model is wearing a slightly different pair of earrings in one of the pictures, and I’m intrigued. Where are those? They are far more interesting! But these will do if they must.

    5. Porta Necklace, Tiro Tiro, Adorn Milk
Bold in scale, simple in geometry.

    6. Bobbi Brown Luxe Lipcolor, Pink Nude, Nordstrom
I’ve always gone for reds, berries, and on occasion, coral. Branching out into the bold new world of subtle nude lipstick. *gasp*

    7. ‘Marcie Small’ Leather Satchel, Chloé, Nordstrom
I spotted this on Instagram (@thefoxandshe is wearing it nonstop), and fell hard. It’s $2000, but boys is it lovely.

    8. Edie Shoulder Bag, Coach
My usual brown leather bag is on its last legs. Plus, today is my birthday.

    9. Culottes, Zara
Ask yourself: are culottes right for you?

    10. Suede D’orsay Loafer Flats, J. Crew
      Perfect shoes for the season.

    11. Tie Back Trapeze Dress, LOFT
I own this dress, and when I wear it? Complements all the live long day. Go get yourself one.

    12. Northstar Pullover Sweater, Madewell
The best sweater, in some really excellent colors (but this one’s the best).

    13. Prowling Fox Ring, Alex Monroe
Can you believe I used to hate being called whimsical? ‘Tis true.

    14. Michael Kors Mayfair Glasses, Glasses.com
I think my prescription may have changed, and I’m due for an eye exam. Something large, slightly round, and tortoiseshell is always a good bet.

    15. Collection Cashmere Boatneck Tunic, J. Crew
I won’t don cashmere sweaters yet, because the baby will ruin them. But, pink! Soft! Wishful thinking that this would be practical!

    16. Printed Shift Dress, Old Navy
This print is called “getting figgy with it.” OK.

    Style: Like a Moth

Spring is almost here! Are you feeling it where you live, too? The temperatures climbed above 30° this week, and I was so excited, I showed a bit of ankle the other day like a hussy. I’m eager to wear the pair of striped shoes that I picked up recently ($22 bucks, and super cute), but I figure I should wait for the slush and snow piles to melt first. A little ankle is one thing, but showing the whole top of the foot? Who do you think I am?

Anyway. I want to wear this whole outfit right now, bare legs, stripey shoes, and all.

    Style: Like a Moth…

    1. The Good Machinery, Ciclop Bracelet, Adorn Milk
A whole stack of ’em, just like that.

    2. Derek Cardigan Glasses, Coastal
      Keyhole bridge = nerdy chic.

    3. Nars Lipstick in Gipsy, Sephora
My go-to color these days. Like my natural lip color, but with a bit more oomph.

    4. Moth to a Flame Shift Dress, Gorman
My favorite scarf is printed with beetles all over it. If I had this dress, I could start a small collection of insect-themed clothing, and life would be awesome.

    5. Dream Collective Brass Levine Earring, Belljar
Simple, but with enough detail to make them interesting.

    6. Bernice Taper Toe Two Piece Flats, Target
      Adorable, affordable. Perfect spring shoes.

    7. The Zip Transport Bag, Madewell
I carry a similar tote most days, but I wish mine had a zipper. This one does.

    Style: A Drapey Tee

Everything I’m wearing these days has to be nursing-friendly and machine washable, but most of my pre-pregnancy shirts are still a bit too tight and my options are pretty limited. I was feeling kind of schleppy, so I went out shopping the other day to pick up a couple of new tops that would work for me at my current size, and I came home with my new favorite shirt.

    Nicole Balch

It has a high/low hem, but it’s subtle enough that it doesn’t feel too trendy, and it drapes just right. There’s also a pretty pleated detail in the back.

    Drapey Tailored Tee

I was a little worried about the practicality of a white shirt like this with two little kids around and a baby constantly on my hip; it has a slight texture to it and I thought it might stain easily. Then I spilled coffee on myself within the first hour of wearing the shirt. Because I am a klutz. Happily, the shirt cleaned up nicely!

The necklace and shoes I’m wearing with the top are no longer available, but I found a couple of alternatives and included them below.

    Style: A Drapey Tee

    1. Pixie Ankle Pants, Old Navy

    2. Percey Glasses, Warby Parker

    3. Tailored Tee, Madewell

    Art to Stand On

The past few weeks with a newborn have been a bit of a snooze, sartorially speaking. Luckily I have a cute baby to distract from what I’m wearing, but I’ve been rotating through the same few pairs of pants (these were fantastic until near the end of my pregnancy, and now they’re great again post-baby) and mostly rocking the early nursing days standard of a tank and cardigan. It works, but it’s nice to have a fun new pair of shoes from BucketFeet to switch things up a bit!

    Cute Shoes from BucketFeet

The patterns on each of their shoes are designed by artists (painters, graffiti artists, writers, illustrators, tattoo artists, and so on) from all over the world, bringing a little wearable art to your wardrobe. Eleanor is learning how to tie her shoes, so we picked out a lace up pair for her, too.

    Cute Shoes from BucketFeet

BucketFeet was launched in 2011 by two strangers who met by chance in Argentina while backpacking. The artists that they collaborate with are based all over the world, but my shoes were designed by Erin Burke, a graphic designer based right here in Chicago! Such a cool connection. Now they have just launched dozens of new styles for the season including mid tops, and brand new holiday low top styles. You can see some of my favorites, below.

    Style: October ’14

I’m not pregnant anymore! Hooray, no more maternity clothes! Well, not quite. I’m at that in-between stage where some of my old clothes fit, but I’ll still be in maternity pants for a while. None of my shoes fit either; fingers crossed, my feet will shrink back down a third time. But hey, at least my wedding ring fits again!

The most exciting addition to my wardrobe lately has been a pair of pants that are slightly dressier than pajama bottoms, so the outfit below is a totally impractical wish list kind of deal. How gorgeous is that pink pleated skirt? And those perfect fall shoes! (The two most expensive items, of course. Maybe I’ll just treat myself to the lipstick and call it good.)
