He’s Home Early

He's Home Early

He’s not feeling well though. One of the dogs at the shelter had Parvo, but there was also another virus going around. Our puppy has an upper respiratory infection (we have to give him antibiotics), but all we can do is hope that’s all he has. The shelter thought he would be better at home than staying there much longer, so they neutered him yesterday to allow him to come home early.

He’s very tired, but such a sweetie.

Awww. I hope he gets better soon. It’s double yuck to have a URI and getting neutered so being at your home is the best decision. Glad the shelter let him go to you early. Enjoy your new life.

So excited you decided to adopt him, sooo cute! Don’t worry, most animals at the shelters, etc. are usually sick b/c of the close quarters…he’ll be better soon, especially with the love of both of you!

Congrats! I’m thrilled that you guys decided to adopt. He’s absolutely adorable.

My shelter pup had Parvo and lived to tell about it, but only after a few days in doggy ER w/ 24-hour care. I’m *not* trying to scare anyone.. just keep a close eye on your guy.

Have you decided on a name?

    Again, congrats! :)

Do keep an eye on him for any of the symptoms of parvo… vomiting/diarrhea, etc. He has the best chance of beating it if he gets to the vet right away for subligual fluids and such!

I bet he won’t get it though… do keep him away from other dogs (especially young or old ones) for a week or so in case he is still carrying it.

He sure is cute! Lots of love and cookies for that pup!

Hi! I’ve been lurking your site for quite some time. Just wanted to say congrats on the new addition to the family. He sure is a cutie.

Quick question for you…how are the kitties handling the new family member? Are you doing any type of introduction? I only ask because my husband and I are thinking of getting a dog soon and we have two cats. Ideally, we would like to be one big happy family where the pup and kitties are friends forever. Essentially, I am just curious as to how easy/difficult it is for everyone to get along in a harmonious fashion.

    Poor darling!

I had a shelter puppy survive distemper so I know with good care they can suvive some devastating things that would kill an older dog.

Just being in a house where people love him and it’s quieter should help him a great deal.

Most shelter animals have some sort of URI because of the conditions. I know my cat Lola does and it’s something you deal with and live with and give extra love for.

I’m so glad you decided to adopt, you’ve changed both your lives for the better!

I so glad you decided to adopt a shelter dog. I’m sure eventually you’ll think it’s one of the best decisions you ever made. My husband was totally not with me when I wanted to adopt our mixed-breed puppy from Chicago Animal Care & Control but, three years later, neither of us would want to imagine life without her.

Your new doggy is sure to become one of the great loves of your life. Congrats to you and your new extended family!

    His name is Murray!

He’s doing well. He’s very tired all the time, and he coughs / dry heaves a lot, but it doesn’t seem like he’s getting any worse.

The cats are OK. They’re all very cautious and not coming too close, but they’re coming around more and more.

We have a new addition to the family! Yay!! Nicole he’s beautiful! Nothing better than a mutt from a shelter – they’re ususally great pets! We can’t wait to meet him, Rossi thinks he’s very cute and Francesca keeps smiling an pointing to Murray’s picture. We’ll wait a little bit til he’s feeling better – we don’t want the whole gang to overwhelm him. Congratulations!

hi, i just found your blog by way of ‘this young house’ and so far IT’S FANTASTIC. so glad you have a new puppy and hopefully he’ll be feeling better soon. we have 4 rescue golden retrievers, so here’s some advice to help your house adjust to murray (trust me, i’m a professional)!
    – get a good vacuum cleaner (we love our miele galaxy series carina cannister)
    – washable slipcovers rock
    – crate train murray
    – treat any pet accidents (urine, feces, vomit, blood) with an enzyme cleaner. my personal fav’s are “odor destroyer” from do-it-yourself pest control (http://www.doyourownpestcontrol.com/info/rodents/odordestroyer1.htm)
for hard surfaces and washable items

and the ‘equalizer’ for upholstered items and non-wool carpets (http://www.amazon.com/Equalizer-Carpet-Stain-Eliminator-aerosol/dp/B00061MT7U)

    Good luck!

Aww! I’m so happy you adopted a dog! We just got a new one too, and he had all kinds of stuff, like kennel cough and giardia, but he got all better pretty quickly, and you’d never know he was ever sick. The cough/dry heave you talk about sounds like kennel cough too. The antibiotics will help that from getting worse.

Have fun with the new guy!

My cat (Sophia) suffered two URI’s after I brought her home from the shelter. My vet said this is pretty common for animals brought home from shelters. After the second one, I decided to take measures into my own hands and have been feeding her Pet Dophilus (by Jarrow Formulas) and she has not had one cold or URI since. I highly recommend, as it boosts their immune systems! Good luck, Kate
