September 18, 2008 at 3:33 pmBirdie, they ARE pricey. I’m expecting them to last for a looooong time though, so I don’t mind paying more for good quality. Plus I figure I can wear them throughout the winter too with the fleece inserts that are available (or just warm fleece socks).
Gumbo, they’re 14.5″ around the top. Zappos claimed another inch, but I measured mine at 14.5″ (the same size as my calves).

Seventy-five pounds sterling (or its dollar equivalent) is still a lot to pay for some extra contrast stripes on standard red Hunter wellies (themselves not exactly cheap either), though.
Most of my own Hunter colours collection was made in Scotland, so I’d be interested to see how long they last you, since they are made in China these days, and I have heard about durability problems since production was moved over there from Scotland. The most common problem so far seems to be the sole treads splitting. You can get protective sprays that will clean the wellies and help keep out any UV degradation through bright sunlight (another killer of Hunters).
I would heartily recommend the Hunter fleece stockings also that you mentioned. They come in various colours, and can also be worn indoors instead of slippers or bedsocks.

I saw them at Floriade (the Canberra tulip festival) and fell in love with them, but had to think about it. I think the fact that you bought some recently helped me to make my mind up.
