Parenting Pregnancy Style

Maternity Fashion Guide

sources are listed at the end of this post

Maternity wear can throw even the cutest gals for a loop. It is possible to maintain your sense of style through pregnancy though, and below are my tips. Tomorrow I’ll post the companion guide: Nursing Style. Let me know if you have any questions or tips of your own in the comments!

Tops

  • Don’t bother with maternity cardigans. Any that you already own will still fit, charmingly unbuttoned or open to show off the belly.
  • You will want maternity tanks — they’re nice and long, so they’re perfect for layering. They’re inexpensive too. I like mine to be thin and stretchy.
  • Simple long-sleeved maternity tees are cute with a bold necklace.
  • Loose, blousey tops will likely continue to fit, though you may want to use a skinny belt to create an empire waist.
  • Horizontal stripes are adorable on pregnant ladies. Find a good striped maternity t-shirt or two.
  • Maternity sweaters are nice if you’re going to be very large in the winter. They’re longer and they hug your shape, so you feel cozy and warm without looking like you’ve been swallowed by a huge sweater.

Bottoms

  • These two words together are so completely unsexy, but so completely awesome during pregnancy: maternity jeggings. Get yourself a pair that resemble actual denim and they will be your go-to wardrobe staple. I’m in love with this pair.
  • Low rise, medium panel, or full panel? Low rise pants feel like they’re falling off once you start to get bigger, and as your shirts cover less and less area, you’re going to be showing some belly. Maybe that’s cool with you, and if you’re a fan of low-rise pants in general, you may like them in a maternity option. Some of your old favorites will also likely fit for a long time. Medium or demi-panels can be nice if you’re going to wear pants when it’s warmer, but I prefer the full panel pants. They aren’t tight (so there’s not much extra support, contrary to a lot of manufacturer’s claims), but they do feel more secure, and I like that my tummy is covered in case my shirt isn’t long enough. The extra layer can help camouflage your belly button too when it starts showing through your clothes.
  • I wore a lot of skirts and dresses throughout my pregnancies, so I wore a lot of tights. You can find maternity tights, but typically only in brown, black, and gray. I just bought colorful tights in a larger size with no control panel and that worked out fine.
  • A maternity pencil skirt looks best. A flowy jersey skirt is not as polished, but it’s still cute and it will be super comfy.

Dresses

  • Some dresses will work throughout your pregnancy, though they will get shorter and shorter in the front as your belly expands. They do tend to tent in a pretty unflattering way towards the end, so if you wear a lot of dress (like I do), you may want to buy a couple of maternity versions. They’ll be cut to hug your belly instead of just hanging from it.

Unmentionables

  • This is awful, but I mostly wear sports bras when I’m pregnant. Yes, your boobs are smooshed and the look is normally not the most flattering, but I don’t mind the silhouette coupled with a baby belly. You’ll be tender in the early stages of your pregnancy and then you’ll be quite busty toward the end. Sports bras feel the best to me, and I’m all about comfort when everything else can be so uncomfortable.
  • Even if you give in to comfort (like me) in this department, you’ll probably want at least one normal bra that makes you look good. Pick your favorite style, but you’ll have to size up (so trying them on is a must).
  • If there was ever an acceptable time for granny panties, pregnancy is it. Low-rise is good too, but whatever style I pick I do like to feel like my rear is covered and they’re not going to fall off. I like these. I work my way up the sizes as I get bigger, then back down as I return to my pre-pregnancy shape (or an approximation of it).

Accessories

  • Enjoy your regular-sized purses now. You’ll soon need something much larger for toting diapers.
  • Big, bold necklaces look cute with more basic tops. Giant corsages are fun too. Basically, wear it all while you can before you have an adorable little baby that wants to grab everything!

Fabulous list! The new Old Navy maternity jeggings are a fraction of the cost and are incredible. I love them more than my maternity jeans and wish they came in black.

Fabulous style (and comfort) tips! The only thing I would add is a supportive no-wire bra. I found that sports bras were either too constricting or not supportive enough for my already ample chest. And underwires dug into my belly during the last trimester. The solution; a couple high-quality soft cup bras.

But woe to pregnant mamas who are tall, close to or actually plus-sized, and professionals in need of suits or business attire. Because you are SOL!

The only part of pregnancy that literally drove me to tears was my attempt to find a suit or suit-like pieces to wear for court appearances.

Pea in the Pod caters to short and slim and their stuff is poorly made (but crazy expensive). On-line, expensive options I tried were laughable crappy as well. Sigh.

Also check out Rosie Pope Maternity. Her stuff is SO amazing–she’s a former model so she is super attuned to form and fit, and none of that frilly stuff that you find in a lot of maternity stores. They also make great bags INCLUDING! a diaper CLUTCH.

I loved Old Navy & Liz Lange for Target for most of my maternity stuff, and I invested in a pair of skinny maternity jeans from the Gap as well.

Can’t wait for your nursing post, I have way more tips for that, since I’ve been dealing with it for longer than I was pregnant (14 months and still going strong!).

I nursed for longer than I was pregnant too. It was frustrating as I lost a lot of weight but still couldn’t buy some of the clothes I would have liked to (many dresses just don’t work). I hope the nursing style guide will be helpful, and please chime in with your tips!

As a mother of 4 , I can definitely give props to the full panel maternity pants. They are comfortable and stay put. In the earlier stages of my pregnancies, I liked to wear a more mid rise type of jean with a with stretching waistband. Those types ok jeans are also nice when your post partum and are in that no mans land where full panel maternity jeans sag (and you’re sick of them, anyway!) but your regular jeans just don’t quite fit. I also have a pair of maternity jeans that look like normal jeans, but have adjustable elastic on the sides like toddler pants! Gotta love ’em!

Ah, jeggings are a life saver. Non-maternity jeggings were super helpful to me post-baby. They looked cute and were comfortable enough to not be a constant reminder of the weight I’d gained. This post has lots of good suggestions, thanks!

LOVE this post!!! I am 33 weeks along and I wear my maternity jeggings all the time! I got the Heidi Klum pair from Motherhood Maternity and now looking back I wish I would have splurged for the pair you have shown. Reason being the pair from Motherhood does not have the full panel and I’m starting to be worried about showing a little too much skin as I am getting bigger and bigger. Other than that they are comfortable and extremely flattering! I’ve purchased a couple of maternity layering shirts, and I mostly wear my cardigans that I already had in my closet. I love all your suggestions! Thank you!

    February 7, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Awesome, thanks! I keep seeing maternity jeggings everywhere and think, “REALLY?” — it just doesn’t seem that flattering. After reading this (and the other comments about maternity jeggings), it looks like I’ll have to try them…

    • Making it Lovely
      February 7, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Yes, try them! The look of outfit number six above (skinny/slim pants, longer drapey top, small cardigan topper) is my favorite way to wear them.

    • Renee Smith
      February 7, 2011 at 4:51 pm

I was shocked to see them on the list, too. I had to click to the website to look at them, and frankly, I think that even the model on the website looks bad in them (pantylines and all), though they are probably better with a top! I have a 2-yr-old and a 2-month old, and had a really hard time finding things that looked good and covered my ever-enlarging bum in a flattering way… I’ll just say that it got a little lumpy toward the end of the pregnancy… slowly working back to my regular sized jeans. These jeggings looked great from mid-thigh down, but I passed on these after trying them on.

loved this and needed this – but you forgot the most important piece – SHOES!

i have put away the high heels for now, but any recommendations for proper flats, boots?

    • Making it Lovely
      February 7, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I didn’t include shoes because I figure everyone will just wear their normal favorites! I’ve still worn heels while pregnant, though not as often and I shied away from the higher ones once I started to get bigger. Your feet will likely grow, so I’d just buy one or two inexpensive pairs of shoes in a larger size. Be aware that your feet may or may not go back to their previous size again (mine came close, but not all of my old shoes fit and I had to get rid of several that I really liked).

Target and Payless are good places to find cute, affordable flats. Target usually has good boots too, though they sell out early in the season.

I really loved the Bravada essential nursing bra when I was pregnant… it’s a lot like a sports bra, but it does give you a little more definition.

    • Making it Lovely

I love Bravado! I included them in my nursing guide, but thanks for bringing them up here too.

  • Anna
    February 7, 2011 at 4:22 pm

Great post! When I first got pregnant, I thought I wouldn’t buy too many maternity items because I didn’t want to spend money things that I would wear for only a short period of time. But I quickly realized how important it is to feel attractive while you’re pregnant! For me it was especially important in the early months when I was clearly bigger than usual, but not definitively pregnant looking.
I’m completely with you on the jeggings – they’re not something I thought I would ever wear, but I got a pair from a friend and love them!
Now that I’ve stopped working, my favorite maternity outfit is a maternity hoodie (a must for me, b/c my regular ones quickly became too short and it’s cold here in MI!), a tank and full panel jeans. Definitely get a cute pair of jeans – I wore mine all the time. The non maternity tanks at Old Navy are long and always fit me just fine – I got some sparkly ones for Xmas and parties and they were my favorite thing to wear.
As for bras, my boobs are large to start with (38DD) and somehow they didn’t get much bigger. I’m 37 weeks right now and am still wearing the same bras that I wore before I got pregnant. One thing that made that possible – I got a “bra extender” from JoAnn fabrics (in the notions, near the snaps, etc). They’re only $2 or so and are a lifesaver.

I can’t wait for the nursing guide! :)

    February 7, 2011 at 4:27 pm

Great tips! For me I hate wearing lots of layers, so I couldn’t do granny panties… I wore regular bikinis throughout my pregnancy, just one size larger than usual. And don’t forget something comfy like maternity yoga pants! I practically lived in my two pairs while at home.

Looking forward to the nursing post as I’ve just started nursing and no longer fit into my mat clothes!

You forgot my number one maternity piece – a belly band! Bella Band seems to be the most popular high-end one, but Target and Motherhood carry their own less expensive versions. So great to stretch your non-maternity bottoms into the fifth or sixth month, and essential for when you are dying to fit back into your pre-baby jeans but aren’t *quite* there. I’m in my 7th week on baby #2 and already scoping out belly fashions. A bump makes a great accessory!

    • Making it Lovely
      February 7, 2011 at 10:08 pm

Ah, thanks for the tip. I never used a band, but I know others who swore by them!

    • Sarah
      February 8, 2011 at 12:19 pm

Good call! A couple belly bands, a pack of elastic hair ties, and a few long camisoles got me through the first two trimesters. I eventually had to give up my favorite pants, but it gave me time to hunt down maternity pieces that fit instead of just buying the most convenient things.

  • Jess
    February 7, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Excellent timing! I’m 16 weeks and just starting to get frustrated at my cute t-shirts riding high and my now beltless pants sagging a little low for comfort. I’m lucky enough to work at an office that won’t mind the days I wander in wearing pj bottoms, but it’s not something I want to make a permanent fashion statement of! I’m looking forward to the nursing fashion post, but can I request a third part to this series? I’d love to see a baby/toddler-friendly followup- accessories that actually look nice but would survive a little gnawing (the ones I’ve seen aren’t mistakable as anything but toys), shirts that could hide a little sleepy drool, purses that COULD double as part-time diaper bags, etc?

FYI- As of this moment, Old Navy is having a 30% off maternity sale, where you can find many cute pieces just like these.

I love all this. Thanks so much. I so envy gals who can rock occasional heels while pregnant. I could not for the life of me even sit in high heels while pregnant. And guess what? I practically never wore flat shoes before getting pregnant. And being 5 feet tall and round all around, you want the extra height to take the edge off the belly. Hopefully second time around it won’t be so bad. Hopefully.

Lots of great advice! I have to add that investing in good quality maternity trousers has been so worthwhile. I have tried some of the cheaper brands (e.g. Target, Old Navy) and they just don’t compare to the comfort of my Noppies jeans and trousers (both full-panel). Definitely don’t wait on finding maternity trousers since you’ll need them eventually and you’ll feel so much more comfortable if you have them early on (I spent a lot of time with top buttons unbuttoned before I heeded the advice of my Mom-friends and they were soooo right).

Here in Europe, H&M maternity has some great tunic and long-sleeved tshirt tops that are comfy and affordable. I haven’t needed any sweaters, because as you pointed out, all my pre-pregnancy cardigans are still wearable.

I love my one maternity dress (which I hope to transition into a nursing dress since it’s got a crossover bust), but the leggings I have don’t want to stay up anymore and my tights aren’t that comfy either. As for the undergarments, I’ve found that my pre-pregnancy stretchy camisoles are the most comfy. I did buy one proper bra when all my usual ones stopped fitting, but the kind saleslady warned me to wait until the very end to get any more since you’re likely to change sizes again when your milk comes in. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the nursing wardrobe recommendations!

Nicole, nice post! I wish I had this before I had my 2 kids. I never wore leggings, so I can’t comment on those but I will agree with others about the full panel jeans. I had 2 pairs of maternity jeans. An ON pair that was low rise (it was the first thing I bought when I was pregnant). These worked for the period before I got really big (when I switched to the more full coverage), although I think I got more use out of them the first couple of months AFTER I had both kids. My full coverage jeans were from gap. These held up much better than the ON pair and I bought them on sale so they didn’t cost much more. If you you have to dress nice like I did, I bought 2 maternity jackets for meetings (1 in black and 1 in tan from Gap). The rest of the time I relied on regular cardigans like you recommended with stretchy tanks and t-shirts. I did have a couple of maternity button down shirts, but in the end I hated them. They never seemed to hang right and they didn’t stretch enough to be comfortable. I do recommend a mix of tanks (I ended up with a couple of maternity and a couple of ones in 1 size bigger). I also had a black wrap dress like #9 with a 3/4 sleeve that got a lot of use. For at home, I also loved my maternity yoga pants.

I am curious to see your nursing post. I think it is such a tricky thing. My mom bought me couple of nursing tops, which never worked! I relied mostly on nursing tanks with cardigans (a popular trend in my wardrobe).

I would also love it if you did mommy wardrobe. With a 3 1/2 and almost 2 year old, I still have trouble finding the right mix of style, comfort and most importantly cleanability!

Great ideas! I am at 35.5 weeks right now, and have been making it work with 3 really nice ($$$) maternity shirts and 1 dress, supplemented by cheaper mat pants and one fold-over waist skirt. The really inexpensive T-shirts I bought shrunk so much as to be practically useless. I regret wasting $30 on those when I could have bought one T of a better quality. I would also get more mat tanks for next time. I wear them under everything to work and then I use them as workout wear at the gym as well, instead of buying maternity exercise clothes.

I totally recommend the non-maternity Long & Lean tank tops from Target. $8 each, just bump up a size from your usual. They are long enough and stretchy enough to wear them for the entire pregnancy, even at the end when all your tops barely keep you covered.

I’m 31 weeks now and have definitely found long, thin maternity tanks and long-sleeved maternity shirts (I have two of the shirts you show in #2) to be extremely helpful with layering. I also prefer full-panel maternity jeans (esp. skinny ones) and Hanes undies in larger sizes to avoid my butt hanging out (Hanes low rise bikini cut). And I, too, have worn sports bras for much of my pregnancy. I agree that they are most comfortable and the silhouette w/ belly is not bad in most shirts.

One thing I found is that many clothes labeled “maternity” are horribly huge tents. I stuck to regular (but long) clothing in a larger size instead.

If you’re in the UK and need maternity tights, then try:
    – JojoMamanBébé
    – H&M
    – New Look
I got purple/plum and grey merl tights from them. My New Look maternity jeans are also awesome.

I did a post on the same thing last year on my personal website:

I’ve been reading your blog for a while and really appreciated that I could go back to these types of posts now that I’m preggo with baby #2. I’m trying to find a pair of maternity jeans that last… the link above for maternity jeggings doesn’t work. can you tell me what brand you liked? thanks!

Shoot, I don’t remember. It was something with a J, maybe? Or the full link said “It Jeans Secret Fit Belly 5 Pocket Maternity Jeans”, so maybe “It Jeans”?

Awesome – thank you! Anything is better than the maternity jeans I wore last time. :)
