Skinny jeans! I don’t typically wear jeans, but after Abbey mentioned how flattering these were, I had to go try them on. Let me tell you, she was right. I’d wear them with shiny, art school girl shoes and a pretty tunic. My bag would have a paint drip pouch inside (just because it’s fun and I love it), and then I’d wear simple earrings and a couple of stacking arrow rings to finish off the look.

How do you style your jeans? I know how to rock a dress, but this is a new area for me.

Love the jeans! I love long, flowy tops and tunics, and skinny jeans are made for them. Also love them in the winter to tuck into my boots or with high heels for a night out.

I just bought the Gap “Really Straight” jeans which wear much like a skinny jean on me. For spring: I love wearing skinnies with simple tanks and statement crochet necklaces I make (http://www.gracelaced.com/?s=crochet), and finish the look off with some espadrille wedge sandals. Perfectly Springy.

Me neither! This is the second time someone has recommended these particular skinny jeans, so I think I will try them and see for myself! =)

Skinny jeans really are flattering and are surprisingly comfortable. I wear them with flats or boots also.

On top I like to do a thin sweater or fitted long-sleeved shirt over a cami and then a fitted military-cut jacket or a cool weather waist-length swing coat.

However, last week I wore them with a flowy tank top and a thin 3/4 sleeve unbuttoned sweater. Really, you can pair them with almost anything!

A fab pair of jeans is part of my interior designer/mommy uniform! Never tried those Gap jeans (confession: I have a total designer jean fetish), but I may have to soon, the price is awesome! I love a dark pair of nicely fitted jeans with subtle distressing, a dressier silk top, satchel style bag, chunky cuff bracelet, stud earrings, my favorite tank watch and some cute flats. I saw someone wearing skinny jeans with some wedge heels though and loved that look.

Love, love this outfit! The pinky/lavender top and the red shoes… be still my heart ;) You can’t go wrong with skinny jeans and a tunic!

I also love the ‘Diva Skinny’ jeans from Old Navy, super affordable and flattering. I’ll have to check out these Gap ones too! Thanks for the tip.

Oh man, last time Gap jeans were on sale, they weren’t selling any of their skinny jeans in tall sizes, but the internet has them now, so who knows…

I really don’t need another pair of unintentional skinny ankle jeans.

    • Ruth@GraceLaced

Iris–did you know that skinny ankle jeans are “intentionally” in style? :) You see them everywhere this spring!

I know this, but there’s only so many pairs of them a girl needs, lol.

That, and tall-sized jeans can be turned into ankle jeans, but ankle jeans cannot be turned into tall-sized jeans ;)

i’m so SCARED of skinny jean. i guess because i’m not ‘skinny’ and i have hips and thighs. i’m scared they’ll make me look top heavy with little ankles! ha!

I hear such good things about those particular jeans! I have to try on a pair for myself, for research sake- naturally. I agree with many of the style options mentioned by other readers but I also enjoy pairing skinny jeans with a really feminine blouse, ala’ anthro or even forever 21. Especially something that’s loose fitting. I think the ‘big on top, small on bottom’ balance works esp. well with skinny jeans. And I like the jux. between femininity and masculinity. Great post!

I’ll try them, but I’m going in with low expectations. You’ve seen me–I’m too curvy! I shouldn’t wear pants as it is, and skinny jeans make my already not skinny body look like a fun-house mirror reflection.

My only problem with most of the skinny jeans I’ve tried is that they are also low or super-low rise which means I get SERIOUS muffin-top. Not at all flattering.

I’m pretty sure I will die if I don’t get those earrings – LOVE them!

    • Jules
      April 8, 2010 at 6:42 pm

Yes on the muffin top! I’m so long-waisted that anything low-rise just creates even more problems.

        April 11, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Jules – I am so long-waisted it’s not funny but I’m here to tell you these jeans are so fabulous I bought a pair today after first hearing all the positive comments on MIL. Just make sure to get the mid-rise style, which I think is actually the “forever skinny.” Try them on and then be amazed. I think they’re just as flattering as everyone is saying!

I’ve never had luck with skinny jeans, being the chubby petite I am, but I can rock just about any look with these jeans: http://nydj.com/#/home/collection/jeans/styles/bootcut/157

Typically I like to do a hip-length top, and a cardigan, plus whatever pair of shoes I feel like wearing for the day. Perfect for the office (granted, I work in a very dress-code-free environment) and for casual nights out.

I’m really into lace, too, and these look great above jeans: http://www.freepeople.com/scandalous-lace-top
You get a nice juxtaposition of flowery lace against durable denim.

I love wearing a pair of my husbands beat up holy oversized jeans with a really pretty, feminine top.

I also love wearing my skinnier jeans cuffed with my brown leather eastland loafers and a collared top with a sweater vest on top.

I live in jeans. Even at work, I wear black or colored jeans. I’m thin, but I’ve never had much of a waist (much more so now that I am 4 months pregnant), so I tend to wear billowy tops. My favorite proportion is a skinny leg paired with a pretty, full top, a cropped jacket or boyfriend blazer and flats or very high heels. I find it looks good on me, because of the aforementioned lack of a waist and the fact that I am proportionally leggy.

I do own a pair of Gap’s Always Skinny but I usually opt for Diesel. Now that I am pregnant, I’ve swapped to a pair of William Rast Sienna jeggings and Jolt, which are a great bargain at 40 bucks a pop. You can buy them at the BP section of Nordies.

I don’t rock the skinny jeans; it’s just not my thing. This sounds weird, but my ankles get claustrophobic….

Jeans are probably my favorite piece of clothing, but finding a pair that really, truly, actually fits is about impossible. I probably have 10 or 15 pairs that kind of fit and 1 or 2 pairs that really do fit! If I was a millionaire, I’d definitely have custom-made jeans!

Love the outfit! My fave skinny jeans (which I Totally thought I couldn’t pull off cause I’m a curvy girl) are the Vera Wang ones at Kohls- the best and almost always on sale! NO muffin top with them which is great! I also have a pair that I just made out of the Old Navy Sweetheart jeans- they were bootcut but I while I liked the waist I never liked the legs. So I traced my Vera skinny jeans on the legs and stitched up the sides- voila, perfect jeans!

I’m always on the lookout for skinny (but not too skinny) jeans, especially since my calves are on the bigger side. The only downside is that they are so often either extremely low rise or super high waisted!

I like to wear mine with loose tops like drapey tees and blouses and a “men’s cut” button down.

JBrand Skinny jeans are the best. I skimp everywhere else, but I’ve learned to seriously splurge on denim. The JBrand cut is flattering on everyone and they last forever. (seriously…I have pairs that are five years old and in perfect condition, despite daily wear).

I am also not exactly skinny, and those jeans fit me perfectly too…I have three pairs, I love them so much.

  • Heather

I have those same skinny jeans–and they are so flattering! I think the secret is that they have a slightly higher rise than many jeans, which shapes the waist nicely instead of cutting directly into the muffin top region (which has been my issue with other skinny jeans I tried on).
I like to wear them with a long, flowy top or wear a short dress as a top over them. These jeans have inspired me to buy a few more pairs of fun boots–since I can tuck the jeans in, they really show off a great pair of boots!
I swore I’d never do the skinny jeans thing, but I actually feel like the dark wash is quite slimming when styled with a longer/flowy top. I used to only wear bootcut or trouser-style jeans, and I’m really enjoying playing with this new silhouette!

I bought my first pair of skinny jeans a few weeks ago. I loved the style and the way they looked on other people, but I was hesitant to wear them because my legs are really short! My husband said they make my legs look longer. Fancy that? I love to wear mine with a pair of converse, a cute t-shirt, and some fun jewelery… I bet you look amazing in yours. You are so stylish.

I really love the skinny jeans!!!
I wear them almost every day for the last 5 years. The way you usually wear dresses, is also perfect with skinny.. A nice long cardigan, a belt and pretty girly boots is my favorite in the moment. I also love to simply wear a white T and some feminine color ballerina.. inspire by the simplicity of Audreu Hepburn.

I truly love your blog and style.

You’re on to a good thing. I live in skinny jeans in all colours, but always with a short loose dress or tunic, something that stops at your hip bone. They’re great with converse or ballet flats for day and v cool with heels. Long loose stripe t-shirts esp good.

These are my favorite jeans! Gap pants and jeans don’t usually work for me, but these are truly flattering, and I’m a curvy girl. Try them, they work with everything. It took me a while to get the hang of styling skinny jeans because I was kind of scared of them at first (big hips, small ankles). Now I wear them with everything!

Just found out we’re getting Gap in Australia this year – yipppeeee!! Having discovered the joy of mid-rise skinnies last year, I’m never going back. I also take exception to all the so-called style guides which recommended low-rise jeans for short-waisted people like me – all they do is make the middle look thicker (hello, muffin-top) and legs shorter. Not a good combo! Oh and showing everyone what you had for breakfast every time you bed over is quite vulgar and SO 2001.

I hope you don’t mind… going to dive in and critique. Skinny jeans need to be worn waaaay tighter than you have here. They just look peculiar if they’re worn loose. Don’t worry about the inevitable muffin top because that’s what the long loose top is for.

No need to ask how the healthy eating regime is going anyway. Girl needs to go down at least one dress size.

  • Seraph
    April 12, 2010 at 8:38 pm

Dark skinnies (black or just indigo), a white button down (I have five, in different styles and materials from classic to tunic to this weird ruffly knit thing) and red shoes (I have a pair of flat maryjanes, a pair of 4-inch maryjanes, and a pair of low wedge sandals). Sometimes I switch it up with a pair of gray skinnies and a black button down, and I have a great pair of Born boots to alternate with the red shoes.

This is close to becoming a uniform, but I feel so crisp and classic and put-together every time I wear a variation. Plus, with black skinny pants, I can get away with it at work.

  • Fiona

I may just have to try these. I’ve got a pear shape and short legs, so I’ve avoided even trying on a pair of skinny jeans. I’ve been seeing a lot of girls roll up the bottom of their skinny jeans when wearing them with heels or flats, and it looks so crisp and clean versus wearing them long and bunched up at the ankle.
