The Basement Tile

It’s in, and it looks fantastic. The bathroom is a different green than the floor, though it’s hard to tell in the photos. There’s no lighting in there yet so it looks a little darker.

Here’s the laundry room. We’re going to get a new back door, so you can just ignore all of that ugliness there.

A closer look at the Octagon & Dot tile:

And here’s a photo from the same angle you’ve been seeing. It’s coming together, yes?

Looks AWESOME. I’m totally jealous. I would love to redo our basement, but it’s a super oldschool hand dug dirt floor and would cost a zillion dollars :(

wonderful! Can’t wait to see the finished product!

The basement is looking great! I LOVE the tile!!! Hope you can get it all done in time for the little one. I know we cut it really close. I was painting and having contractions…

It’s really coming together! I love seeing your choices in reality. A swatch is so different from a painted wall!

I almost want to buy a house wreck and make it beautiful again. I think you’ve got me dreaming outside of my budget…

I love the photos of how it’s all coming together and seeing an almost unusable space transform into totally functional square footage (is “footage” a word?). A question: what’s the silver box in the third photo? Is it a tankless water heater? If it is, do you like it? Thanks Nicole!

    1. Making it Lovely Avatar

Yes, we went with a tankless heater. We had a couple of problems at first, but after replacing a defective part it has been great.

      1. Erin Avatar

I’m curious what type of tankless water heater you went with? We just had to replace our furnace and thought about doing a new water heater too. We decided to wait a while on the water heater – we had to move quickly and I didn’t have time to do the research. We got mixed thoughts from installers. How many hot water taps do you have? Does it keep up with your demand? Do you get the “sandwich effect?” What kind of problems have you had? Sorry, tons of questions!
Love the way the space is coming together!

Nice! The green looks so crisp against the white tiles.

We have that same on demand hot water heater and love it! It’s so nice not having a huge hot water tank taking up space.

Please make sure to get a good fitting back door with a sweep on it. That old one has enough of a gap to let in mice and rats! Eek!

Sorry, Pest Control Operator, here. Can’t help but notice those things.

    1. Making it Lovely Avatar

The contractor cut that door down because it was hitting the new tile, so that’s a temporary gap. Once the new door is in place we’ll be good again.

      1. Kris Mays Avatar

You might want to put a towel down there at night to keep any unwanted guest from infiltrating until then….

Are those black and whites stripes I spy in the last picture?! You MUST tell me what they are going to be used for.

Black and white stripes are my BFF’s. We do everything together.

It really is coming together, thank you so much for sharing the process with us!

I use and love this inexpensive rack from Target. I think it’s intended as extended hanging storage (ie, seasonal things out of the way) but I use it to hang-dry stuff I don’t want to go in the dryer, which is nearly everything not jeans, socks, cotton undies, and the like. I do also use a cheap accordion-style wooden drying rack for flat-dry items. I think the dryer is really hard on most clothing and it only takes a second to throw it on a hanger, and let it sit on the rack. I do have ample space for this in my laundry area, though – I’m not sure how yours will be laid out. I like that it’s wheeled and I can move it a bit when I need better access to the backside, or whatever. Oh, and I use the horizontal cross pieces on the ends to dry bras.

I am curious what made you decide on gray vs white grout. It looks great! …I had just never considered using gray. My floors are painted chocolate brown so I am wondering if it might clash where the two meat…

      i mean *meet*

    2. Making it Lovely Avatar

I’ve seen gray in photos and liked the look, plus it seemed better for maintenance. Our bathroom on the main floor (original to the house, 100 years old) has white tile with gray grout too. You can find grout in every color, so you can get a warmer gray or even a chocolate brown if you wanted to.

      1. Kris Mays Avatar

Yeah, it’s going to look great. White would not be a good idea on the floor. Love the choices we have in grout these days.

Wow. I love it so far which I knew it would great because you have awesome taste. Are the tiles available at stores like Lowes or Home Depot? They are just perfect.

    1. Making it Lovely Avatar

Yes, I think they’re at both. They definitely have the at Home Depot, which we only found out about after having paid too much at a local tile shop (boo).

Loving the floor! And the green-it is the second most used color in our house after gray. Can’t wait till its all done as I am sure you are too.

Just curious, did you get someone else to tile for you guys? What is the average cost for that soft of job (if you don’t mind telling)?

    Thanks :)

    1. Making it Lovely Avatar

Normally we would have tiled and grouted ourselves, but in my *ahem* condition, that would have been hard. It was only $400 to do both rooms, so that was well worth it.

May I ask why you chose to paint the basement floors as apposed to other flooring options? Are your ceilings quite low, if so does it feel closed in? Just wondering, we are also renovating and older basement.

    1. Lena Avatar
      Lena

I think she said somewhere that it was mainly because of the costs. Painting is simply the cheapest thing to do.

Love the floor tile. Quite practical too, we have mosaic tiles in our bathroom and you never see hair or dirt on the floor (the grout/pattern really helps hide it).

everything is gorgeous! Have you considered just painting that back door a glossy slate or black? (and just adding a draft-preventing strip to the bottom…) It looks like a neat old wooden door – but maybe the pictures aren’t doing it justice? :)
