MiY 7a: Boy’s Room

In this edition of Making it Yours, we’ll be following the Window Daybed as it shows up throughout a young boy’s life, starting in his childhood bedroom.

Here it is as a little boy’s brand-new bed, complete with cute monster bedding! A bright blue nightstand next to the bed is a good place to store books, and a dresser with wooden sides has gotten a coat of citron paint for more color in the room. The striped rug adds a nice graphic pattern to the room, and a nice clear blue looks great on the walls. The vintage kid’s chair is mid-century modern and the light is new with seventies style, but they work together well and also with all of the new pieces in the room. An alphabet and guitar print adorn the walls, and a really awesome doll house works in the room for a boy just as well as it would for a girl.

The room is for a little boy, but nothing feels too twee or cutesy about it. Next we’ll see the daybed make an appearance in the boy’s teenage bedroom! A lot of the same elements will remain, but the room will grow up a bit as our young boy gets older.

  • Thank you for the LON link to the dinosaur bedding! You sent it to me 2 months ago and it took me that long to loop back around to it, but I just placed the order. Very excited. :)

  • Ack. I just spent 20 minutes trying to find that monster bedding online and then called Garnet Hill directly and it is completely sold out. It would be absolutely *perfect* for my son’s room. The colors are just perfect. Le sigh.

  • Hey, that’s the rug in my boy’s room! Blogged about here:

I really really love Dash & Albert rugs and stripes make me happy. When we move to a bigger bed, I like the idea of a daybed, actually. It seems nice and cozy (although we have a tall kid too, so we shall see). Very cute!

  • I just went shopping with my cousin’s wife yesterday to buy things for their little boy’s ‘big boy’ room and we chose a room colour scheme of blues and greens. When we got home, I showed this board to her! It was perfect timing because I am going to try to convince her to paint the nightstand a bright blue like you have shown as a burst of fun energy in the room! Thanks Nicole! Angie xo

  • Totally 100% in love with this room. Le sigh, I need the girl version!!!

  • I love the color and the room in general. These are really great ideas! And I like that you’re making the plain IKEA furniture completely your own.

  • Ooops, sorry, I may have been hasty, it looks like they are a company that actually pays artists rather than just copies them. I truly hope so anyway.

  • I love this room (and the whole series) – you have some amazing ideas!

But, not to be a troll (and I know that LoN sponsors you sometimes so this is awkward) but that alphabet is a blatant rip-off of some amazing, hardworking artists trying to support their own family: http://www.bookhou.com/wood-alphabet.html

It may be that LoN happens to carry it in their store from the artist (I hope that’s the case). They do have a solid history of supporting indie artists. Anyone who wants to support the artist directly can do so now though, so thanks!

  • I love this! My 2.5 year old will need a big boy bed soon and I like that this one isn’t your typical toddler bed. It can be used for years and can even work in another room later on. The chair is great, too.

  • I LOVE this series, so realistic for what decorating a home and making good purchases is all about! This is the perfect bedroom with appropriate pieces for a boy, so fun with just enough whimsy!

  • Oh, I love all of this!

We have the Mandal dresser in my son’s room, and we love it. It feels so sturdy. I never would have thought of painting it, but it looks great on that mood board.

Love it! The Mendal looks great painted. Isn’t that alphabet actually by Bookhou?

  • I love MIY! I’m always so excited when you start a new one, so inspiring and so great to learn about new companies and products. I never heard of Dash & Albert, what a great find! I also love seeing more blue in your posts, did the laundry room renovation turn you around?!

One thing I always wish in the MIY posts is that you make the wall color the background color for the entire frame so you really feel like you’re looking in the room and get a chance to say, see how the citron dresser looks against the light blue wall color. Not sure if it’s possible but I think it would make such a difference.

In any case, love all your choices! Love love love the blue and green together!

Thank you for this! I just ordered the Monster duvet cover for my son’s big boy room. I’m working with some furniture we already have, but the rug and other items are helpful!

  • Any male child with my genetics would outgrow that daybed by the time he’s 14. Tall people do not get along with footboards ;)

  • Love it! The combination of blues and greens is my favorite!

  • Yay! I have a similar-style daybed from West Elm that we purchased as newlyweds that I’m now using in my 3 year old son’s room. I just did a post over on my blog about it. I was kinda feeling like the bed didn’t really work, so I’m glad to see your post. It validates my decision!

  • I LOVE that lamp. It’s going in the boys’ room one day.
