Mini Terrarium and Fern Centerpiece

I made a terrarium last week that I will share with you soon, but this isn’t it. This is a little premade guy that I picked up at Sprout Home while I was gathering supplies to make my own. The fern was supposed to go inside the one I made too, but it was too big for the container so I’m trying it in the dining room. Apparently it’s a high maintenance plant, a lover of humidity that will require a daily mist. It is also particularly appealing to the cats, so I don’t think it’s going to last long. I’ve had that tree stump planter forever though, tucked away behind the computer on my desk, and it’s nice to give it center stage with a new plant in it.

And how many trends can I gather in one setting? If you were playing a decorating drinking game, you’d be pretty smashed! Birds, a terrarium, a tree stump (painted silver for a bonus!), an agate geode, a big hunk of rose quartz…

  • Love it!

I just want to go and open up those glass cabinets and have a peek inside.

I thought maidenhair ferns would be pretty picky, but I’ve had mine for YEARS and I’m a notorious plant killer. Even if I ignore it for a few weeks (weeks!) here in super dry Colorado, I can douse it with water and get it going again- It’s truly the most forgiving plant I own.

So don’t knock it until you try it :)

  • Thank you Thank you! This has been one of those projects that I have wanted but didn’t know if it took too much work. It’s looks easy enough and fun! I plan to create one for me and then one for my small boys with small miniatures. I’m sure army men will be placed in it. =)
When I post my creations, I’ll be sure to link back to here.

  • You have a lovely blog, this is a really nice source of inspiration! thanks for sharing.

  • I love the tree planter. Is there a hollowed out section in the middle that you have a glass/plastic container in? Just wondering as I have a stump similar in the shed and a handy husband!

Yes, there’s a clear plastic pot lining the opening. Should be easy enough to recreate with any old stump, just find something without drainage holes.

  • So pretty! I love that planter. It definitely deserves center stage. :)

  • I love little ferns like these, and yours looks particular nice in that planter. Unfortunately, I haven’t had any luck keeping them alive. I’m going to try keeping some larger versions outdoors this year.

  • think the birds count as fluro… mega trend!

  • Lovely post and blog! I love these ferns too, but have never managed to keep one alive. I’m tempted to go and buy some more and try again!! :-)

And ta-da! Apparently that difficult to care for fern, a maidenhair fern, is Emily Henderson’s favorite indoor plants.

I’m feeling much better about killing mine now:)

Cheers! My cat and I killed that plant here. And I only have the one cat.

  • Can’t wait to see it! I have been wanting to make one…but I’m kinda scared, which is really silly but I have a “black thumb” and kill all plants!

  • A decorating trends drinking game is GENIUS!

  • Lol, you certainly covered the trends. I love your little fern, nice pop of green:)

  • Throw in some cardboard antlers and an owl or two and you are set!

Seriously, though, love the silver stump…

  • Oh my gosh i LOVE the wood planter! Where did you get it from?!?!

You are my inspiration for all-things home. I even picked up a small bird’s nest fern yesterday and was planning to attempt a terrarium for a centerpiece for an upcoming gathering at my home. Really in truly, thanks for all the lovely ideas!
