  • Choosing New Lighting for the Bedroom

Choosing New Lighting for the Bedroom

I am working with American Express to redo my bedroom. This week they have provided me with 100,000 Membership Rewards points.

Remember when our roof was leaking last month? Well the water killed our light fixture in the bedroom, so now I’m looking for something new. I’ve been thinking about the Edison Chandelier but as I tweeted about a month ago, “I can’t decide if I think this is industrial cool, or if it just looks like a giant spider on the ceiling.”

All of the images show it in a dining room, so maybe it would just be weird in a bedroom? Here are the other options I’m considering:

I already own a pair of Adjustable Arc Sconces (A), so whatever I choose for the ceiling fixture will have to work with those. The Eclipse Pendant Lamp (B) doesn’t look like anything special in the product photo, but in person it’s really pretty (and a little shimmery). I’m also thinking about getting a Jonathan Adler ceiling light (C) because I love the one that’s in my studio. I feel like the bedroom is an opportunity to do something a little different though.

Now, before you look at the photo below, let me preface it by saying that I think the Hailey Antique Flower Chandelier would look awesome if painted.

Glossy green, maybe? Mustard yellow? Could be good, right?

I’d like to choose something by the end of the week because I’m eager to redeem my American Express Membership Points and finally get a new fixture in the bedroom. I’m really having a hard time deciding though – I’ve been thinking about lights for weeks! Which one would you choose? Or have you seen something else that you think would look even better?

  • Vintage Cups and Saucers

    Vintage Cups and Saucers

My mother-in-law moved back to Oak Park from Des Moines, Iowa last year. She downsized, going from living in a large home to a small condo… plus fourteen thousand storage units that she is now renting.

She’s working on getting rid of a few.

We, along with Brandon’s sisters, have been the beneficiaries of said downsizing. Sometimes the stuff is a little odd (she has an extensive collection of fake food), but sometimes it is awesome. Like these vintage cups and saucers (a set of twelve).

    Vintage Cup and Saucer

She thought I might like them because they seemed like my style, and they reminded her of our living room chair. She was right. Aren’t they fantastic?

Also, I just got this email from her today:

I noticed somewhere on the blog something about “what do you do with 150 yardsticks?” We have a similar amount of antique ones, some with very entertaining ad slogans on them. When we get our act together, we are making a wainscoting (vertical placement) in the powder room here. (The one with the tree stump sink.) They will look awesome and will provide for some good reading for visitors, seated or standing.

She’s referring to this tweet, but there are three things that stand out here.

    1. She is in possession of 150 antique yardsticks. (Please refer to the earlier mention of fourteen thousand storage units.)

    2. “tree stump sink”

    3. She is conscientiously thinking of both genders when designing her bathroom.

    My mother-in-law is pretty great.

    Amy Butler Wallpaper

Be still my heart. Did you see that Amy Butler is coming out with a line of wallpaper with Graham & Brown? Looks like I’m going to need to find another room that needs wallpapering.

  • Outdoor Dining Chair Options

    Outdoor Dining Chair Options

Now that the weather has (mostly) warmed up, I’m eager to get to work outside. I’m still looking for a matching set of dining chairs for the backyard. I would love to own any of these, but buying eight of them would be pretty pricey:

Here’s what we’ll likely end up with:

I haven’t sat in the Blankö chair (my IKEA doesn’t have it yet), but Brandon and I both like the simple lines of it. I’ve considered the Urban chair before, but I always think it looks a little funny in person. Maybe out of the store and in the context of my garden it would look more stylish? They look sharp in this photo that ran in Blueprint:

    Which chair would you choose?

  • Elephant Plant Stand

    Elephant Plant Stand

I’ve found another new version of a thrifted item that I have. This time it’s an elephant plant stand.* It’s a little kooky, no? Sometimes I like a little touch of the bizarre (or even a little ugly) in decor. It keeps things interesting!

    * I found a couple of other options here and here.
