  • Blue Bathroom, Finished!

    Blue Bathroom, Finished!

Huzzah! Hooray! The bathroom is finished!

    Bathroom

Most of the items are sourced in my last post, so check there if you want to know where everything came from.

So, yeah. I went with option #6, with the white vanity (Bathroom Redo [Renderings]). I was going to go for option #2 with the dark brown, but I changed my mind once we switched to the new, white medicine cabinet.

There are little vingnettes here and there, to distract you into thinking that the bathroom was not once an ugly, confused mess.

    Cuteness

I actually think the bathroom is kinda cute now! And we did the whole thing for only a few hundred dollars, which was of course the goal. We also painted twice, which was not the goal (haha), to arrive at the lovely green we have now.

I even painted and brought the teal/turquoise color over by way of plastic bins to the storage area:

That’s “my side”. It wasn’t too bad before, but I thought “hey, why not double my work?” because that is how I roll. The frames that we had hung in our previous bathroom are up there now. They’re just ads from a British magazine (for Marks + Spencer), but I love them! I think they’re perfect over by my makeup and girly things.

Oh, and we hung a silver letter ‘B’.

‘B’ for Balch, ‘B’ for Blue, ‘B’ for Bathroom, ‘B’ for Better!

  • Blue Bathroom, Concisely

    Blue Bathroom, Concisely

We’re very close to finishing the upstairs bathroom now, probably within the next couple of days. In the meantime, I came up with a little something I hope you’ll like.

I read a lot of magazines, as I’m sure many of you do, and I especially love it when a room is broken down into its elements. I thought I’d try my hand at it, and I came up with the following:

    Blue Bathroom, Concisely

I really had fun making it, so I think I’d like to do at least a couple more for other rooms in the house as we finish them.

Coming soon: the finished project! ;)

  • Shopping Soundtrack, Anyone?

Squeee! I’ve just stumbled upon the most wonderful collections of 50s/60s shopping mall music!

Any of those songs would make a fitting soundtrack to this little video (found via Jenn Ski’s blog):

  • Six Months

As of today, we have been in our new home for six months! We closed on the house and moved in on February 1, during the coldest weekend of the 2006-2007 winter (that was fun).

We’ve painted almost every room, remodeled the kitchen (and learned how to tile in the process), tore up the carpet in the bedroom and put in bamboo floors, changed light fixtures, setup a library, and of course… we’re freshening up our not-so-nice bathroom. I’m proud of what we accomplished, of the new skills we’ve picked up, and I love that we own tools now like a table saw and an air compressor.

We have so much to do though.

    Living Room
Nice, but those curtains need to be hemmed.

I find myself looking at rooms and wanting to repaint or move the furniture around, but there are other areas of the home that need attention first. I’m still looking for wallpaper to go in the dining room, but I haven’t fallen in love with any single pattern yet. The outside is plain, pushed to the back of our to-do lists, waiting for next year. We need to put bamboo flooring in the studio. I still haven’t learned how to use my sewing machine. That aforementioned bathroom needs to be finished. Yes, there is still plenty to do around here!

A huge thank you to all of you, lovely readers. I’m inspired by you and your comments, and by all of the other wonderful blogs in the design community. I do hope that I’m giving some of that inspiration back. Here’s to the next six months!

  • A Change of Plans

    A Change of Plans

The bathroom is further along, but I’m afraid I’ve deviated a bit from the original plan!

I hated the lights above the medicine cabinet, so I bought a new fixture for $30 from Lowes. We had to take the cabinet down to install the new light, and then realized that we couldn’t put it back up. The lights wouldn’t clear the top, and there were going to be some harsh shadows.

The new plan: hang a mirror instead and add a small medicine cabinet to the right, over the toilet. I bought a mirror ($30) and a cabinet ($40) from IKEA. Oh, and I repainted.

    Bathroom Redo

It looks pretty good so far! The trim still needs to be primed and painted, and I haven’t done anything to the vanity yet.

    So far, so good
